Welcome to St. Paul’s ChapelPlease add your voice and heart to the prayers. Everyone is welcome at Jesus’ Table, and everyone’s voice is needed to tell the Good News of God’s love in Christ. Please help others find a place near you, and greet the person next to you as we prepare to worship together.

If you would like to pray with someone confidentially, for yourself or others, go to the altar rail during communion time.

About this ServiceToday we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, which is one of the seven principal Feasts of the Episcopal church year, and is commonly observed on the first Sunday following November 1. All Saints’ Day recognizes “persons of heroic sanctity” among the entire membership of the Christian community. It is also one of the four holy days denoted as especially appropriate for baptisms, along with the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, Easter Vigil, and Pentecost; therefore, on this day we welcome new Christians through the sacramental baptismal rite, and we are invited to renew our baptismal vows during the service.

This is a service of Holy Baptism with Eucharist according to Rite II, which begins on page 299 of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). Scripture readings are appointed by the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) and are from God’s Word, My Voice (GWMV) by Lyn Zill Briggs, which is a version of Biblical texts considered more accessible for children. Hymns come from The Hymnal 1982; Wonder, Love, and Praise (WLP); and Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS). The Prayers of the People and other service elements usually taken from the BCP may also come from additional sources as noted.

The Liturgy of the WordThe First Reading Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

Reader A Reading from the Book of Daniel.

Many years ago, in the kingdom of Babylon where Belshazzar was king, a faithful man from Israel named Daniel had a dream—a vision of the future—as he lay in bed. When he woke up, he knew the dream had really been a message from God, so he wrote down everything he could remember:

“I, Daniel,” he wrote, “saw in a vision winds from every direction blowing and stirring up the waters of a great sea. Then I saw four giant beasts come up from the waters, all different from each other.

“I felt terrified and confused. But there was someone there in my dream God had sent to help me understand. So I asked him to explain the dream and what it meant. Here’s what he said: ‘These four beasts are meant to represent four kings from four different kingdoms who will rise up to rule in the years to come. They won’t always be kind or fair to the people of Israel. But don’t worry—God sent you this dream so you could tell his people that, in the end, his own holy ones will inherit the kingdom and live in it for ever—for ever and ever.’”

The Holy Gospel Luke 6:20-31

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Deacon Jesus said, “Blessed are you who have nothing, because the Kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are hungry now, because soon you’ll be filled. Blessed are you who are crying now, because one day you’ll laugh. I know it’s hard when people hate you, exclude you, and make fun of you because of me, but you’re in excellent company. That’s how God’s greatest prophets were treated, too.

“Don’t think you’ve got it made because you have lots of money; that might be all you have. If your stomach is full today, don’t assume you’ll never be hungry again. And don’t think that if you’re laughing now, the fun will never end. It will. Don’t assume you’re perfect because others only say nice things about you. Don’t just live to make people happy; you’re called to much more than that.

“Listen to me, my people. Love your enemies. Be good to those who hate you. If they curse you, bless them instead. Pray for them. If they hit you in the face, don’t strike back, but offer them your other cheek to hit. Don’t just give your coat to someone who asks for it, but your shirt, too. Help the people who beg on the street. Give without expecting to be repaid. Treat people the way you would want them to treat you and you can’t go wrong.”

The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For in the multitude of your saints, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus

Music: Jonathan Woody (b. 1981)

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Page 11: St. Paul s Chapel · 2011-06-16 · St. Paul s Chapel For a World of Good Broadway and Fulton Street, New York City Tr inity Church W ALL STREET The Feast of All Saints Holy Eucharist

11

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where with all your saints we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

All AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer BCP p. 364

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fraction BCP p. 364

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for

you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Bach at One1pm, St. Paul’s ChapelLast season, Trinity completed its long-term presentation of Bach’s complete sacred choral music. This year Bach at One continues in the fall with the six motets, BWV 225-30, with which the cycle began, as well as other favorite cantatas, performed by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra. The ensembles perform these works with period instruments, providing a historically informed experience of some of Bach’s most awe-inspiring sacred works. Today: BWV 227 Jesu, meine Freude and BWV 131 Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir.

2016-11-06-0915-SPC-Bulletin-v7

The image on the bulletin cover is the Trinity Seal. Inspired by The Revelation to John 10:1–10, it represents the arrival of the first Anglican Church in the colony of New York in 1697. The seal features a “mighty angel” with a “face like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire,” straddling the sea and the land and transferring the Gospel, brought from England by the ship, to a child, a symbol of the young colony of New York. In the scroll below the angel’s feet appear the words “JURO TEMPUS NON FORE AMPLIUS” which translate as “I Swear That There Shall Be No More Delay,” referring to the urgency of establishing the Church. Bulletin cover poetry is from the Revised Common Lectionary project sponsored by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library and the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, a division of the Heard Library.
