Third Sunday Third Sunday in Lentin Lent

March 3, 2013March 3, 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we continue this ‘Year of Faith’ in our Catholic Church I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss briefly the Seven Sacraments of our Church. This is the second part of my series called the Sacraments. Last month we looked at Bap-tism, Confirmation and Eucharist and today we will discuss Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. As Christians, we know we are sinners. Although Baptism washes away our sins, it does not make us perfect. We still sin, even after Baptism, and we still need forgiveness for those sins. After Jesus’ Resurrection, he prepared His Apostles to lead His Church, with power and authority, including forgiving sins. (John 20) The confession of sins not only meets our religious obligation, but it resolves the deep human need for psychological healing. Venial sin harms our relationship with God while mortal sin breaks the communion. The only way to restore that communion when broken is through God’s forgiveness. And all we have to do to receive that for-giveness is to confess our sins honestly and ask that they be forgiven. There are no sins or collection of sins which can-not be forgiven in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Because Jesus gave His Apostles the authority to forgive and retain sins, the Church uses that power to bring Christians back into a right relationship with God. Only a priest who has re-ceived the authority from the Church can pronounce the forgiveness of sins in Christ’s name (in persona Christi). God, in His wisdom, understood not only the depths of sin to which man could fall, but He also understood the unique human need for forgiveness, so He blessed mankind with this Sacrament. There are few joys to equal the sense of purification that arise in the heart of the repentant sinner after a good confession. Olive oil was the universal healing medium of the ancient world. Oil was used to anoint kings and to heal wounds in the Old Testament. As the New Testament clearly indicates, oil was used to heal the sick. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick reminds us that this Sacrament is not solely for those preparing for immediate death, but also should be offered to those suffering from advanced age, those facing a serious operation, life-threatening illness or a turn for the worse from a serious illness. Jesus Christ left His healing power to His disciples, and anointing with oil has always been part of the healing ritual. (Mark 6) The Church continues to exercise that healing power today by anointing the sick. When our prayers for healing seem not to be answered, we should remember that suffering for Christ is a privilege. Through the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, our sufferings share in the suffering of Jesus on the Cross. When we are near death, the Sacrament prepares us to face that final struggle with strength and grace. Remember to keep the faith, know the Truth and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all you meet. As this Year of Faith continues, try to do everything you can to pray, learn, study and reflect on the teachings of our Catholic Church! In Christ, Jeremy Hylka

PRIESTS FOR LIFE Cardinal Justin Rigali, in the annual Mass for Life in Washington DC in 2007, commented on the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion on Jan 22, 1973. He called it a misguided use of judicial power exercised in the name of the authority resting in the people of the United States of America.” He went on to say, “Each passing year con-firms us in the pain of recognizing the violence inflicted upon millions and millions of unborn children and even partially born children in our land. It is important that this truth be acknowledged, that repentance be sincere, and that effective means be taken to stop this grotesque tragedy, while preventing it from being repeated in the future. At the same time each passing year confirms us in new hope for the future. As people of prayer, we are moved by the words of Saint Paul, who says: "we have set our hope on the living God" (1 Tim 4:10). The word of God and His commandments encourage us in our efforts, and they certainly inspire the rising generation to form new attitudes and assume a fresh commitment to the cause of life.”

ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE

'We need volunteers to assist each night for our 4 day Lenten Mission from March 17-20. Please see the table in the Narthex with instruction and sign-up sheets. Thank you for your cooperation and help!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, instituted this year “The Year of Faith” to provide an intentional time for Catholics to deepen our faith in Christ. So during this Lenten season, we are invited not so much to think of what we will “give up,” but more, to think about how we will enhance, renew and develop our relationship with Jesus. Along with parishioners throughout the United States, I invite you to participate in CRS Rice Bowl as a way to encounter Jesus through others, espe-cially the most vulnerable around the world. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS acts as our hearts and hands in nearly 100 countries, easing suffering and providing hope and assistance to people in need. Through CRS Rice Bowl we will pray together; give things up, or fast, in solidarity with those who hun-ger; learn about our global community and the chal-lenges of hunger and poverty around the world; and give sacrificial donations to those in need. Your par-ticipation in this program will help so many of our brothers and sisters around the world, by helping improve agriculture in Burkina Faso, stopping tuber-culosis in East Timor, offering early childhood edu-cation in Lesotho, providing clean water in Pakistan and many other ways. At the end of Lent, the sacrifices saved in your Rice Bowls will be collected by your parish and sent to support the work of Catholic Relief Services world-wide as well as to support local hunger alleviation efforts in our diocese. Last year, $63,081.34 total was collected with 25% for the Local Rice Bowl $15,770.34 and the remaining $47,311.00 for Na-tional Rice Bowl. Thank you in advance for your consideration of CRS Rice Bowl as part of your Lenten practice. Your prayers and contributions during this holy sea-son do make a difference.

God bless you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet
