STOP ASSISTED SUICIDE IN CALIFORNIA

Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coalition of physi-cians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! On the weekends of December 12/13, and 19/20 petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote in California and can only sign once.

Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing sui-

cide for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society.

• Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assist-ed suicide.

• Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.

Oh, by gosh, by golly. It's time for mistletoe and HOLLY! “The Christmas Holly”

The bright green leaves and red berries, well into the cold season, make holly right for Christmas. Its symbolism, however, is much deeper. For early Christians it was not only reminiscent of the burning bush seen by Moses, but prophetic as well; In the face of Christmas sentimentality, it foretells, with its prickly points and drops of blood-like berries, Christ’s crown of thorns. According to ancient legend, its berries were once yellow, but were stained permanently by Christ’s blood, since it was used to fashion the Savior’s crown of thorns. (Maybe this is the reason for the superstition that holly, if brought into the house before Christmas Eve, would provoke family fights.)

The symbolic roots of holly go deeper still, into the subsoil of the Roman culture. The Romans would send holly to friends in a gesture of friendliness and goodwill during the mid-winter feasts. Later Northern Europeans hung it on doors as a symbol of shelter for the wood spirits.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES SEEKS WEST END REGIONAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Pope Francis has called us all to “hear the cry

of the poor and to give a voice to the cry of the poor.” He has also declared an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy that commenced December 8,

2015. What better way to answer His call than assisting Catholic Charities in providing the corporal works of mercy described in Matthew Chapter 25: “Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.” Please consider joining Catholic Charities West End Regional Committee to develop fundraising and awareness events for Catholic Charities.

Contact Bill and Kelly Schlegel at 896-6351 or e-mail us [email protected] if you have a heart for the poor, enjoy making decisions, have a special talent or you have fundraising skills. We need your help!
