Jesus I Trust In You!

(A Catholic Discussion Group)

The Patricians is a Catholic discussion group that presents a different religious topic each month. You can join the discussion or just listen. This month’s topic is, “Finding Jesus,” and the discussion will be led by Deacon Tony Moralez. Using spiritual principles based on the Magi’s journey in their search for the King of the Jew’s, Deacon Tony will explain how we can all use these same principles in our lives to deepen an encounter with the Lord. This should be a very interesting and informative session for the beginning of the New Year and for the beginning of the Lenten Season. Don’t miss it!!!

We will meet on Friday, February 19th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Damien Center, Room A. Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend and meet some new people.

Refreshments will be served.

V alentine’s Day, a day when we show and share the love we have

for that special someone; the day of the valentine card. The custom of sending “valentines” or love notes originated in the Middle Ages with the belief that birds began to mate at that time of year. The poet Chaucer (1340-1400) first mentions this

correlation in his poem “Parliament of Foules”:

For this was on Saint Valentine’s day, When every fowl cometh to choose his mate.

Valentine’s Day is not a day observed on our liturgical calen-dar. Yet, the day gets a great deal of attention in our culture. No doubt, it gets attention in your home. Some people asso-ciate Valentines’ Day with a man named Valentinus, a priest in Rome who was executed for his faith in the year 269. Leg-end has it that Valentinus cured the young daughter of one of the jailers who guarded him while he awaited his execution. On the night before his death, it is said he wrote a farewell note to the girl and signed it “From your Valentine.”

As a family, use Valentine’s Day to emphasize the im-portance of genuine love, the kind of love that reflects the teachings of Jesus. For example, start and end this day with a blessing by making the sign of the cross on each of your children’s foreheads. Think of other expressions of love you can offer to all in your home during this day that celebrates love.

Veto referendum

Dear Pastors, Pastoral Coordinators & Ministry Leaders,

A year ago we began our struggle to protect the elderly, ill, poor, disabled and immigrants against doctor assisted suicide. As you may have heard, we have not been successful in gathering sufficient signatures to place a Referendum to Veto AB 15 on the November ballot. Doctor assisted suicide will become legal in California when the 2nd Extraordinary Legislative Session ends in a few months.

Please know that we are very grateful for the remarkable efforts you, our Pastors, Pastoral Coordinators, Deacons, Parish Staff, Knights of Columbus, Social Concerns, Respect Life & many Ministry Leaders made making phone calls, sending e-mails and paying personal visits to our legislators. The Diocese of San Bernardino raised over 22,000 signatures for the Veto Referendum. Ours was among the most substantial effort based on the number of registered voters in our area.

Unfortunately only about 157,000 signatures total were gathered across California, short of the 367,000 needed. The brief period of time we had to gather signatures, during the busy holidays, without funds for professional signature gathering, made it difficult to reach our goal. We are certainly disappointed.

However, your efforts raised awareness of our Church’s love for those at the end of life, the value of all our brothers & sisters, regardless of illness, poverty or disability. Your hard work created a conversation that we very much need to have in our family, church & society.

Our efforts were not fully successful, but your advocacy made a difference. We must continue to give public voice to our Catholic values. Thank you.

Marie Widmann, Director Pro Life Catholic Ministries Diocese of San Bernardino
