“The popes have spoken of human ecology, closely linked

and the environment, June 2013

I wish to begin by wishing each of you, my Broth-

ers, your families, your friends and the Greater Com-

munity in which we serve, a very Happy New Year.

As I searched for the words I wanted to write, in

my first message of the New Year, I found myself

procrastinating to get the job done. It seemed my fo-

cus was on my personal needs and desires, thus for-

getting about the mandate to serve each of you as you

have called me to do.

Advent gave us time to prepare for that glorious

event celebrating the birth of Jesus. It soon dawned

on me what I needed to say as Christmas Eve ap-

proached. On that day, I had the pleasure of meeting

and chatting briefly with a couple of our widows. I

also took time to visit a Brother Knight (who is ill)

and his wife. These visits and the reactions I received

soon gave me the focus I needed.

As the New Year confronts us we must dust our-

selves off to refocus what our mission as Knights is to

be. Are we to continue helping each of our selected

Charities through monetary donations? Or are we to

find other ways of reaching out to those Charities

when money falls short? What I see is a mix of both

areas.

Hard decisions are to be made as approval of our

annual operating budget must be reviewed and passed

by the general membership in the coming months.

The world we live in continues to become more chal-

lenging, as we try very hard to accomplish the annual

events and fundraisers to support the budget plan. I

put a challenge and call out to each of you to help us

in this task. Making a phone call, sending an e-mail,

or even attending the January/February meetings,

with a new idea would be a great gift you could give

Chaplain’s Remarks Father Leo Byrne

Dear Brother Knights,

The Book of Deuteronomy offers a single line of scrip-

ture which can become a daily prayer reflection.

“The Lord your God carries you as one carries a

child all the way you have travelled until you

reached this place” Deuteronomy 1:31

You can write it out and read it or memorize it and re-

peat it from time to time. Each day provides an oppor-

tunity to reinforce the belief that God has carried you

and is carrying you…all the way you have travelled

until you reach this moment in your life.

I have this quotation near where I sit to read. I pick it

up two or three times a day as a kind of prayer and re-

assurance of the constant care and presence of God in

my journey of life.

Father Leo Byrne

Chaplain

Financial Secretary’s Report Br. Dale Tuepah

New Honourary Member

On Jan.1/14, Allan DeBenedetti, (our Ad-

vocate), will have achieved "Honourary

Member" status with the

Knights of Columbus.

Allan has served in many

positions at his former

Council in Leamington,

including Grand Knight.

He also served as District

Deputy in the Leamington District.

Congratulations "AL".

[From Pg. 1] Giving in this way is not an easy venture. I will be the first to attest to that. It requires that we step

away from our comfort zone and expose our vulnerability. Remember mostly that this is what God asks of us.

As mentioned by Pope Francis above, we must not allow the money to drive our success in fulfilling our

mandate. Let us remember that by doing good deeds, and allowing our voice to be heard, we will in fact reap

the needed rewards to maintain our goals. Let us all not allow the money to rule. Instead let it be one of the

many tools in our ‘repair box’.

Again, I wish each and every one of you and your families a Very Happy New Year!

Vivat Jesus!

Missionary Discipleship Br. David Caracciolo

[David Caracciolo and a few Council members attended a Mission at the Cathedral in mid-December, pre-

sented by Father James Mallon. Here are David’s comments on the Mission.]

During Advent some of us attended a "mission" at St. Mary's Cathedral. Over three evenings Fr. James Mal-

lon, of "Catholicism 201" and “Dogmatic Theology” fame, spoke on three topics:

1) Being disciples, i.e. ready to continue learning about our faith, especially about the key message of Christi-

anity ("Kerygma").

2) The power of the Holy Spirit whose fruits, if we ask for them, include greater love, joy, peace, gentleness,

self-control and patience.

3) The need for all Christians, not just the clergy, to be missionaries, to go out and make disciples of all na-

tions (Matt 28: 19).

He explained that this is what Pope Francis has been calling for since being elected, even suggesting that we

make a mess while doing it.

Are we ready to be joyful and loving Missionary Disciples, drawing closer to God, while sharing the Good

News of Jesus Christ with our families, co-workers, even strangers?

Vivat Jesus!

[The online Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries do not have these words, but, Google them …..]

They are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected;

frequently humorous. Winston Churchill loved them — I’m sure that most of you know of his famous/

infamous retort ending in “ ……., but in the morning, I shall be sober.”

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong

They begin the evening news with 'Good Evening,' then proceed to tell you why it isn't.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

You're never too old to learn something stupid.

2014 basketball free throw The Basketball Free Throw (BBFT) Competition season is

here once again. Since there are some new Knights in our Coun-

cil who may like to become involved, I would like to provide

some brief background and an explanation of why we conduct

our BBFT the way we do in Council 9652 before I seek the sup-

port of volunteers to assist with the conduct of the in-school

competitions which have become a cornerstone of our Youth

Program.

Six years ago we took a deliberate decision to conduct our

BBFT competition in our catholic schools during the school day

to increase the number of boys and girls participating. In spite of

approaching nine local elementary schools, we were simply no

longer able to convince children between the ages of nine and

fourteen to give up part of a Saturday to shoot baskets with us

and, as a result, BBFT was quickly becoming a memory. So,

with some coaching from Brother Bill Coppens whose daughter-

in-law Pamela taught at St Mar-

guerite Bourgeoys School, we

tried a new formula to integrate

our competition into the school

curriculum as an element of

physical education during bas-

ketball season.

In January 2008, we ap-

proached the four catholic ele-

mentary schools closest to St

Paul the Apostle Church at the

start of their basketball season.

Only St Marguerite Bourgeoys

Catholic School (CS) responded

positively that first year and a

total of 53 children participated.

In 2009 we added Mother Teresa CS and a total of 187 children

participated. In 2010, we were delighted to add Archbishop

O’Sullivan CS to the list of schools participating, and we

counted 243 children participating. Last year, Council 7883 in

Napanee asked us to help them reintroduce BBFT to J.J. O'Neill

CS where Brother Ian Stuart is Principal, and our participation

reached 282. In short, with a few years effort and the strong sup-

port of an outstanding cadre of Brother Knights from Council

9652, I believe we now conduct one of the most successful

BBFT competitions in the region.

Brother Knights sometimes ask why we go to the effort of

conducting the BBFT competition. This is a reasonable question

-- after all, it takes at least ten Knights to conduct each competi-

tion. What’s in it for us? I am firmly convinced that there are

several very good reasons to continue to support the BBFT:

First, this is an important KoC activity. BBFT counts as a

major youth activity toward our Council’s eligibility for the Co-

lumbian Award and, in turn, the prestigious Star Council Award

each year.

Second, BBFT deepens our working relationship with our

parish schools, giving us more opportunity to contribute posi-

tively to the development of our youth and giving our youth a

positive awareness of the Knights of Columbus. Those Knights

who assist with conduct of BBFT almost invariably remark how

enjoyable it is to work with the children and how good they feel

for helping to make a fun and healthy event available to our chil-

dren by donating a morning or afternoon of their time.

Most importantly, BBFT is an outstanding fraternal activity

which bonds our Council Knights more closely together in com-

mon cause. Last year alone, 14 Knights of Council 9652 donated

more than 200 hours of their time in support of the planning and

conduct of the BBFT.

Finally, I would like to make a special appeal all Knights

who have not yet assisted with BBFT to become involved this

year. We will need more volunteers to judge and score free

throws, especially if we are

successful in convincing John

XXIII School to participate for

the first time.

It is important that you un-

derstand that you do not need

to be a basketball player to

help out. You only need to

enjoy working with children

and be available to volunteer

at least one morning of your

time (from about 9 AM until

12 Noon) or afternoon (from

about 12 Noon until 3:30

PM) .

As of 17 December, the 2014 schedule for in-school com-

petitions is as follows:

a. PM Tuesday 14 January - St Marguerite Bourgeoys

CS;

b. AM Thursday 16 January - J.J. O'Neill CS Napanee

(with Council 7883);

c. AM Tuesday 28 January - Archbishop O'Sullivan CS;

and

d. PM Friday 31 January Mother Teresa CS.

In addition, there is still potential for John XXIII School

to participate. At our January meeting, I will pass around a

volunteer sign up sheet for your consideration. In the mean-

time, if you have any questions or comments, please do not

hesitate to contact me directly.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE Br. Stephen Henderson

Don't assume you can't afford Disability Income Insurance (offered to age 61)

One of the biggest mistakes you can make regarding disability insurance is to assume you can't afford it or

you won't qualify. Before you make that assumption, do some basic research and apply for coverage through

the Knights of Columbus. The Order’s Income Armor product gives you options that can help you fit this criti-

cal protection into your risk management budget.

For example, here are two ways you can reduce your premium:

1. Choose a two-year or five-year maximum benefit period.

Depending on your age, the best option is probably a policy that pays benefits until you reach age 67. But a

two-year or five-year maximum benefit period would cover many types of partial or total disabilities you might

encounter in your working life.

2. Choose a longer elimination period.

An elimination period is the number of days a total disability must exist before benefits begin to accrue.

Typical elimination periods are 30, 90, or 180 days. Choosing a longer elimination period lowers the policy’s

premium. But be sure you have enough set aside in your business's contingency fund to account for the longer

gap.

As your professional insurance agent, running a small business and the challenges of risk management are

two of my specialties. Let’s talk about how to protect your business income, your retirement needs, and your

family's financial future.

Cardinal Dolan will speak to us about our three most recent Popes, Blessed John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI,

and Pope Francis, in an address entitled:

Timothy Michael Dolan (born February 6, 1950) is an American Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Ap-pointed by Pope Benedict XVI, Dolan is the tenth and current Archbishop of New York. Dolan also currently serves as the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Dolan is widely known for his charismatic media personality. He previously served as Archbishop of Milwaukee-from 2002 to 2009, preceded by service as an Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis from 2001 to 2002. Time Maga-zine named Dolan one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” for 2012.

Cardinal Dolan was named in the press as a likely papabile (a possible or likely successor) for election to the

Papacy after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation due to ill health, effective February 28, 2013.

Ed. Note: GK Scott Arnold has reserved a table at this event. He will book another if the demand is there.

Please contact Scott for tickets.

Editor’s Note: Br. Aubert Pereira

By now, the worst effects of the ice-storm have passed us, and we hope for no return of the

severe weather.

I have added something new to this issue—Araprosdokians (sent to me by Nick DaCosta, the

Best Man at our wedding), and pictures of a Nativity Scene from St. John the Evangelist

Catholic Church, Edmonton. This is the Catholic Church near where my son lives, and Phoebe

and I go to Mass there when we visit. This latter set of pictures shows that the Knights

across the country take “Light-Up for Christ” seriously and celebrate the Christmas Season.

From Phoebe and me

Best Wishes to all of you and your families

for a Happy and Prosperous New Year

Vivat Jesus!

RANGER RESCUE

This cartoon is an encouragement

to the church to get out of the

"ranger station" of the church build-

ing, and up on the "mountain" of the

world, where people are in need of

rescue.
