Light shines through the darkness

for the upright. -Psalm 112:4

Our faith rests on the power of God

In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells us of his weakness “so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.” Allowing the powerful grace of God to transform our lives through the sacraments is really what Catholic schools are all about. That is the essence of our Catholic Identity that sets us apart from public schools and other private schools. We had many opportunities this past week to celebrate our faith during Catholic Schools Week, beginning with Mass on Sunday followed by the Open House and a full week of fun events including Spirit Wear and Hawaiian shirt days, “Dance, Dance Revolution” competitions, staff vs. student council volleyball game, science fair, book fair, and Festivale! In addition to the fun and games, we completed a week-long service project for the Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program that allows hundreds of Joliet seniors to stay in their own homes free from worry about preparing bal-anced meals. The most touching celebrations of all were the celebrations of the Eucharist at Mass on Sunday to start the week, and on Friday to close the school week. If you doubt the power of God to transform a life through the sacraments, consider this story. Some years ago, I was the CCD coordinator in a parish in a small town downstate. The pastor asked me to take all of his gift stipends for services performed at weddings and baptisms, and use them to help a woman and her young son who were on the run from an abusive man who had forbidden them to practice the Faith. They literally had nothing but the clothes on their back when I met them. With funding from Fr. Carl and a number of friends in the parish, we helped her set up house-keeping in project housing, and enrolled her son in classes so that he could be baptized and then prepare for first Recon-ciliation and Eucharist with his classmates. For the first time, she felt free of oppression as they were finally allowed to grow close to the Lord through the sacraments. Her hardships were many: she could not support herself because she did not have work experience or a complete education. I helped her enroll in a junior college course of study as a nursing assistant and then find employment in a local nursing home. She eventually moved on to a larger town with public transportation and more job opportunities. I lost touch with her and her son. To this day, her courageous example of relying on the power of God’s grace in the sac-raments, when she had absolutely nothing else, serves as a shining light that reminds me to always appreciate the magni-tude of God’s love. We all have our own stories of difficulties in life. Being open to the power of God’s grace through the sacra-ments gives us the strength to live out our baptismal promises every day. It is an honor to work with the school staff and your children to provide a learning environment that encourages them to draw closer to Christ through the sacraments. As they grow in grace, their light shines before others for the glory of God! As always, thank you for supporting our school.

This weekend, we continue with a long standing tradi-tion here at St. Paul’s. First Communicants and their families will be carrying the Offertory gifts at each of the Sunday liturgies. This will continue through Easter Sun-day. This weekend, the Totani family will carry the gifts at the 4:30 liturgy, the Cipriano family at 9 am and the Jay family at 10:30. Next weekend, the Jordan family will carry the Offertory gifts at 4:30, the Berti family at 9 am and the Garbleman family at 10:30. Regular REP classes will be held on Monday, February 7. The February/March newsletter will be distributed. The Safe Environment curriculum will be taught in grades K-3 for all those students whose parents have not “opted out” of the class. If there are any parishioners working for a company that needs to get rid of old stationery, particularly envelopes, the REP office would be most grateful to receive them. Please call the office at 815-725-6927. Thank you.

PRAY FOR THOSE IN THE MILITARY….MAY GOD KEEP

THEM SAFE!

One of Dr. Seuss’ most charming books, Horton Hears a Who, conveys a powerful pro-life-message—from Hor-ton’s repeated proclamation that “a person’s a person no matter how small,” to the ridicule and hardship he en-dures for defending tiny beings that others can’t see. Scripture tells us we must all become as little children.

“Change for Life”…..

Did you find loose change in those cush-ions or in the laundry and don’t know what to do with it? Why not save it to put in the baby bottles! Please start collecting your spare change for “Change for Life”! We will be passing the bottles out after all Masses next week. Thanks for all of your past support with this very important fund raiser. Ladies Auxiliary/ KC

FROM THE BISHOP 2011 CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS Strengthening the Church at Home Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Next weekend the diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Catholic Home Missions is committed to providing poorer dio-ceses in the United States with the support they need to sustain essential pastoral care. Over the years, the Appeal has supported religious education, evangelization, youth ministry, seminarian education, and ministry training in mission dioceses in Alaska, Appalachia, the Southwest—all across the United States—as well as in Puerto Rico and U.S. territories in the Pacific islands. This important work is made possible through your generosity to this yearly Appeal.

One tangible way to strengthen the Church is through vibrant youth ministry programs in dioceses and par-ishes. Through youth ministry, young Catholics are evan-gelized, catechized, trained in leadership roles, and en-couraged for religious vocations. The young faithful en-ergize the Church and provide a unique vision for the future. Without the Catholic Home Missions Appeal, this essential ministry would not be possible in many mission dioceses in the United States.

Last year, our diocese donated $ 229,526.93 to the Catholic Home Missions. I ask that you be generous in this year’s Appeal. As we continue to recover from the economic downturn, it is important to remember our Catholic brothers and sisters in the United States whose dioceses are financially fragile even in the best of times. The Church in the United States needs our support. To-gether, we can strengthen the Church at home.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel Diocesan Administrator Auxiliary Bishop
