WHO ARE WE?
St. Paul’s is a theologically diverse community seeking to embrace their diversity in order to live through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be a place of learning and belonging for all people.
2
From the Pile on Fr. Kirk’s Desk…
They, whoever “they” are, used
to say that things at the church
slow down during the summer
months. I’m not sure that I
have ever really found that to
be a true statement, especially
here at St. Paul’s.
Though there are somethings that are being
put on hold for the summer, there is still plenty
going on. Have you considered participating in
the following?
• Summer Book Study “The Book of Joy” which begins at 3:00 pm on July 9th.
• Earth Stewardship Potluck, Saturday, July 15, at 5:00 pm
• Mid Year check-in with the Vestry and Treasurer held on Sunday, July 16th at 10:15 am
• Northern Nevada Pride Parade and Festival is on July 22nd. Come and walk in the parade as an outward and visible sign of the Gospel.
• Adult Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation class which begins on July 23rd at 12:30.
• Volunteer at the food pantry.
• Help Fr. Kirk plan the Spanish language service.
• Learn to quilt with Prayers and Squares.
• The Men’s Escape beginning the evening of August 11th through the 13th.
• Start the process to be a reading mentor at Robert Mitchell Elementary school fall. (see Fr. Kirk for details)
• Neighborhood clean up day on the morning of August 19th. (look for details to be announced soon)
The Gospel does not slow down for the
summer. There are plenty of ways we can live
into the mission of Christ. (The details for most
of these things can be found in this Epistle.)
Office Closed July 3rd & 4th
Due to the holiday, the Church Office will be
closed on Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday, July
4th. Regular hours will resume Wednesday
July 5th.
Prayer for the Election of a Bishop
(BCP page 818)
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look
graciously on your Church, and so guide the
minds of those who shall choose a bishop for
this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful
pastor, who will care for your people and equip
us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Prayers and Squares
Prayers and Squares is a
ministry that is dedicated to
making and gifting lap quilts
to persons who are ill or in
need of special prayer.
There is no charge for the
quilts.
Those who participate in the ministry gather on
the fourth Saturday of the month in the Parish
Hall from 9-noon to work on the quilts. We
have a lot of fun working on the quilts.
Interested people are invited to join us to learn
how they can share in making the quilts (and
have a fun time too!). You don’t need to be
proficient with a sewing machine as there are
lots of other tasks involved.

Earth Stewardship Potluck Dinner
The Bible graciously calls us to be responsible
stewards of creation while serving and caring
for one another. How can St. Paul’s best
respond to this calling with passion and
imagination? Let’s discuss this! On Saturday,
July 15, there will be a potluck dinner in the
Parish Hall where we will discuss and
brainstorm ways to be responsible stewards of
the earth. The event will start at 5 pm. Details
for the potluck and some guest speakers will
be announced soon. Mark your calendars for
Saturday evening, July 15, 5:00 pm.

Adult Class: Confirmation, Reception
Reaffirmation, Adult Baptism
July 23 through August 27, 2017.
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Are you new to the Episcopal Church? This class is for you.
Have you been around for a while but have never been Confirmed or Received in the Episcopal Church? This class is for you.
Have you never been baptized? This class is for you.
Have you been confirmed, but you would like to reaffirm/renew your commitment to Christ through St. Paul’s? This class is for you.
Would you just like to come and learn more about the Episcopal Church and what it means to live out your faith? This class is for you.
This class is an adult preparation class for Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation and Adult Baptism.
What are Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation and Holy Baptism?
Confirmation: Confirmation is the affirmation
of one's baptismal vows. It is a sacramental rite
in which baptized persons make a mature
commitment to Christ and receive strength
through the Holy Spirit through prayer and the
laying on of hands by a bishop. Confirmation is
not required to become full members of
Christ’s Body; baptism takes care of that. But
for those who were baptized at an early age
they are expected, when mature and ready, to
make a public affirmation of their faith.
Reception: Persons presented for Reception
are those who have been baptized with water
in the name of the Trinity, have previously
made an adult public affirmation of faith in any
other Christian Tradition (either at their adult
Baptism or on a separate occasion) and now
desire to live their faith within the fellowship of
the Episcopal Church.
Reaffirmation: Reaffirmation is suitable in a
variety of situations for persons who have
previously been Confirmed or Received. Have
you returned to church after a period of being
gone? Have you recently experienced some
transition in your spiritual or church life that has
changed your perspective? Was your
Confirmation so long ago that it is time to
reaffirm it? Were you so young that you don’t
feel you were mature at your Confirmation?
Reaffirmation is a repeatable rite of renewal.
Adult Baptism: Holy Baptism is the sacrament
by which God adopts us as his children and
makes us members of Christ’s Body, the
Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God.
The outward and visible sign in Baptism is
water, in which the person is baptized in the
Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. The inward and spiritual grace in
Baptism is union with Christ in his death and
resurrection, birth into God’s family the Church,
forgiveness of sins, and new life in the Holy
Spirit.
Budget Visioning Check-In
Please join Vestry members in the Parish Hall
between the 9 and 11 am worship services
(10:15ish) on Sunday, July 30 for an update on
the status of St. Paul's 2017 budget and to
check in on goals for 2018 and beyond. Please
bring your dreams for community outreach,
Christian education, stewardship, etc., to share
at this meeting. This is the first step in
developing our 2018 budget. All are invited.
Thank you
A big thank you to everyone who helped with
the recent Salt Lake City, Utah Wesley Bell
Ringer dinner, concert and overnight hosting of
youth and adults! The concert was wonderful
and enjoyed by many. Your help is very much
appreciated.

Bishop’s Search News
The Standing Committee of the Diocese of
Nevada is asking for your help. For those who
missed the announcement, Bishop Dan is
going to retire which means the Diocese needs
to elect a new bishop.
There are many steps in this process, but we
need people to help serve on one of the two
committees, the Election Committee and the
Transition Committee.
A simplified explanation as to what these
committees will do is that the Election
Committee will handle things up to the election
and then the Transition Committee will take
over. Members of the Election Committee will
help put together the diocesan profile used to
explain to applicants who we are in Nevada
and what we are looking for in a bishop. This
committee will also sort through applicants,
interview them and set the slate. The
Transition Committee will handle things to get
the newly elected bishop in place, as well as
organize the celebrations for Bishop Dan.
The Standing Committee would like to have as
much participation and representation on the
Search and Transition Committees as possible.
Balanced representation is the goal. They are
asking for 2 Clergy and 2 Lay Persons to be
nominated from each Mission District for the
Search Committee and 2 Clergy and 2 Lay
Persons to be nominated from each Mission
District for the Transition Committee. 9 – 11
people will then be vetted to serve each team
and a chairman will be chosen by the Standing
Committee.
Persons seeking to service on one of these
committees needs to have been active in the
diocese and who can represent the Mission
District point of view. These groups will be
task-oriented so the following personality traits
would be a blessing:
The ability to maintain a positive attitude, even when the going gets tough.
The willingness to express their opinions honestly and a similar willingness to listen with an open mind to the opinions of others.
The commitment to do what they say they will do and to bear their share of the load without complaining.
The desire and commitment to help the group achieve consensus.
The ability to maintain confidentially.
The ability to meet over a long time. A tentative calendar is in place for the entire
search and transition process.
A mandatory retreat for both the Search and
the Transition teams is being planned for
Saturday September 9th, 2017 at Trinity
Cathedral from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Both
teams will meet with the Standing Committee,
Consultant, and Chaplain.
Transportation and all accommodations will be
at no cost to the committee members. There is
a Bishop Search Fund in place.
If you are interested in being nominated to
serve on one of these committees, please
contact Fr. Kirk 775-358-4474
The deadline to submit these names is August 1st.
“Mr Bagley, I’m afraid there’s rather more to
being a bishop than having your own hat.”
