July/August 2013 ST. PAUL’S EPISTLE 250 Hwy 2 NE • P.O. Box 1225 • Corinth, MS 38835 • 662-286-2922 From the Rector Music, music, everywhere! St. Paul's music offerings continue to grow, with a place for people of any skill level. The choir invites you to come sing for a season; rehearsal for Christmas music will begin in mid-August, and may include hand bells and pieces for children or youth. Organist and Choir Director Ginger Stockton has been planning with the choir for special music for Bishop Gray’s visit on August 6, and for several new pieces during the Christmas season. The Monday night acoustic jams have been a lot of fun for those who have come to play and sing. Bring an instrument you like to play or are learning to play—so far, we’ve had guitars, a banjo, and a harp! Each person brings sheet music or tablature for songs, and together they play and sing. In September, children will be singing again at the start of Sunday school, under the leader- ship of Gail Vaughn. With guitar and song, our youngest members have the chance to make their own sounds of praise. “And what about me?” you say, “What if I can’t carry a tune or pluck out a song?” You are invited to make a joyful noise in worship, and to receive the gift and blessing of the music leader- ship among us. Your input is needed in the search for our next bishop Keep up with developments and offer your voice through this process, visiting the “Bishop Search” tab on the Diocese of Mississippi homepage or clicking www.bishopsearch.dioms.org di- rectly. Check out the facebook page Diocese of MS Bishop Search. The Nominating Committee is offering a "Listening session" in our convocation this month; come to All Saints'-Tupelo at 5:30pm on July 24. All Saints’ will host a potluck by providing meat, and ask that you bring a side dish. A nursery will be provided as well. Members of the Nominating Committee will be present to listen to the hopes and concerns of lay people who worship in North- east Mississippi. Come chime in, and hear what others have to say. Maternity leave for Ann Following the birth of their baby (due Sept. 7), Ann will be on maternity leave for 12 weeks. During that time, the Rev. Sarah Gaede of Florence, AL, will join us for Sunday worship leadership and pastoral care. How does St. Paul's pay for this? The Episcopal Church Pension Fund reimburses the church for costs associated with covering parental leave. We are also grateful for our members who volunteer for various tasks. Stay tuned for specifics on how you can help; please let Ann know if you have computer skills or other availability.

From the Archives By Jan Grady

One of the oldest places of worship in Tishomingo County and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Church of Our Savior in Iuka has been home to Episcopal congregations since its consecration on Sept. 28, 1873. The Bishop of Mississippi, the Right Rev. William Mercer Green donated $250 in 1868 as a nucleus for a building fund for a church in Iuka. The Church of Our Savior ex-emplifies the "Carpenter Gothic" style of religious architecture, characterized by pointed arches and strong vertical lines and built of wood. The St. Mary’s cross over the front door symbolizes the connection to St. Mary's Cathedral, Memphis. When the Cathedral renovated in 1870, they sent the altar railing and sanctuary screen to the Iuka church. For many years the Church of Our Savior was under the vicar of St. Paul's in Corinth.

Outreach News

A big shout-out to our parishioners who helped prepare lunch for Sharing Hearts. Thanks to Barbara Barrett, Susan Adams, Ginger Stockton, and Ryland Bruhwiler a delicious lunch was served to the Sharing Hearts group June 4. Our next date to contribute is Dec. 10.—Tricia Jobe As you may know, the last Sunday of each month is now called “Outreach Sunday,” and a collection will be taken up for a designated mission project that day. We will continue to support the AMEN Food Pantry, along with other local outreach such as Crosswind Ministries and a prepaid utility program through ACE Power. Diocesan ministries such as the Honduras Medical Mission (our June beneficiary- $182) and Camp Bratton-Green (camp scholarships) will also benefit. Domestic and international disaster aid will be through Episcopal Relief and Development. Outreach Sundays are just a piece of our effort to live and love generously. Your ideas are welcome and needed. Each of us encounters persons in need or crisis; what can we do together that we can’t do alone?

ECW Book and Treasure Sale Thanks for your support of the June book and treasure sale. We collected $239.51 for ECW’s next charity project. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated, especially to Tricia Jobe, who donated so many treasured items to the sale.

July/August Bishop Gray to visit August 6 Bishop Gray will visit St. Paul’s on Tuesday, August 6. He will lead a 6pm service at the church, including confirmation of Frances Bullard and the baptism of Kristoffer Hughes. The service will be followed by an Italian-themed dinner recep-tion. Please bring a hearty hors d’ouevres to share. Please make plans to attend this Tuesday evening service and reception. This may be the Bishop’s last visit to our church before the election of his successor.

Education for Ministry (EfM) to reconvene in January

Beginning in January of next year, EfM will be offered fol-lowing the calendar year instead of school year (still break-ing for summer). The first EfM class at St. Paul’’s finished in May, and the course will resume with spring 2014 and fall 2014 semesters. First-time students study Old Testament Returning students begin New Testament Weekly discussion of texts, along with worship, fellow-

ship, and a reflection on events of our lives, asking “Where is God in all this?” and, “What does God want me to do about it?”

Supper Clubs to gather in the fall Sign up sheets will soon be out for any who would like to be part of a supper club of St. Paul's members. The Supper Club Guru will assign groups, which will make up their own rules about how often to meet. Don’t have a big table at your house? The church fellowship hall is available.

Swim party fun!

Even the youngest among us was happy to get in on the fun at a July 14 swim party hosted by the Dierks family. Kids and

adults enjoyed snacks, pizza, and a diving board contest.

Moving from fear to love The Diocesan Committee on Ministry with LGBT Per-sons and The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi present “Moving from a Script of Fear to a Script of Love” August 23-25 at Gray Center, led by the Rev. Ed Bacon, Rector, All Saints’, Pasadena, CA Fr Bacon describes the theme: “All of us are given a narrative about how the world works. Somewhere along our journey we begin to see that parts of that narrative aren't life-giving to you, your family or friends. Things come apart; but the most important part endures, gives us a new script of grace based in love.”

Everyday Sacred: A Women’s Retreat The Center for Formation and Mission has invited Ellen Gabardi to lead a retreat for women at Gray Center September 21-23. Gabardi says, “We will consider the ways that the church invites us to see our mundane, common, everyday lives as sacred. For surely, every day is sacred.” For more information, see http://cffm.dioms.org.

Pilgrimage to Holy Land with Canon David Johnson

Cannon Johnson is already planning a 2015 pilgrim-age to Jordan and Israel, February 23-March 6. Bishop Gray said his understanding of scripture went from “black and white to Technicolor” when he traveled to the Holy Land. Information about the trip is posted on the Diocesan bulletin board. Early registration allows ad-vance and discounted prices.
