There are many ways communion has been done and a lot of restrictions that have been put upon it. Communion is one of the core tenants of what we know as Christianity. The sacrament of communion is relatively universal across all the Christian religions. Although it may look different across denominations, we still know what communion looks like. I think throughout the years we’ve sort of lost the message that Jesus gives at the first communion. He held up the bread and said, “this is my body which will be broken for you. Whenever you eat of this bread, do so in remembrance of me.” He then took the wine, held it up, and said, “this is my blood, which will be poured out for you. As often as you drink of this cup, do so in remembrance of me.” We all know these words and are very familiar with them, but I think there is something else that Jesus is trying to do here. He takes two things that people would have been incredibly familiar with, food and drink, and makes them special. He takes two parts of everyday life that people would interact with, for the most part, every day, and he gives them reverence and sacredness. This also leads into the tradition of saying a meal prayer. Suddenly this common everyday thing takes on a very different light. I think that’s what Jesus is really shooting for in thisthat whenever we eat or drink, we should think about Jesus. And how different would that look? If every time we took a drink, or every time we had a snack, we thought about Jesus. I think it would be a radically different world, or at least our spirituality would be much more at the forefront of our lives. This is, I think, why Jesus did thatto take something we all know and are familiar with and make it sacred. Again, how different would that look for us if we took this to mean every time we eat or drink? So, this month I invite us to do just that. Look for the everyday things that we run into in our lives that God used, then pause for just a second to think about the sacredness. I am willing to bet our lives will be radically changed. A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

This month I was thinking about communion and how we partake of it. There are many ways

communion has been done and a lot of restrictions that have been put upon it. Communion is one of the

core tenants of what we know as Christianity. The sacrament of communion is relatively universal

across all the Christian religions. Although it may look different across denominations, we still know

what communion looks like.

I think throughout the years we’ve sort of lost the message that Jesus gives at the first

communion. He held up the bread and said, “this is my body which will be broken for you. Whenever

you eat of this bread, do so in remembrance of me.” He then took the wine, held it up, and said, “this is

my blood, which will be poured out for you. As often as you drink of this cup, do so in remembrance of

me.” We all know these words and are very familiar with them, but I think there is something else that

Jesus is trying to do here.

He takes two things that people would have been incredibly familiar with, food and drink, and

makes them special. He takes two parts of everyday life that people would interact with, for the most

part, every day, and he gives them reverence and sacredness. This also leads into the tradition of saying

a meal prayer. Suddenly this common everyday thing takes on a very different light. I think that’s what

Jesus is really shooting for in this—that whenever we eat or drink, we should think about Jesus.

And how different would that look? If every time we took a drink, or every time we had a snack,

we thought about Jesus. I think it would be a radically different world, or at least our spirituality would

be much more at the forefront of our lives. This is, I think, why Jesus did that—to take something we

all know and are familiar with and make it sacred. Again, how different would that look for us if we

took this to mean every time we eat or drink? So, this month I invite us to do just that. Look for the

everyday things that we run into in our lives that God used, then pause for just a second to think about

the sacredness. I am willing to bet our lives will be radically changed.

See you in the pews,

Pastor Jeff

Donations for The Country Store

Items for the country store are in very limited

supply. Its hot, hot, hot outside, so we tend to stay

in to beat the heat; why not use this time by

putting your talents into making some handmade

and/or homemade items to donate to this effort?

People LOVE handmade items such as crocheted,

knitted, embroidered, or other forms of stitched

doilies, afghans, pillow cases, scarves, etc. Other

craft projects are also welcome, as are all types of

baked goods. These things always sell.

Thank you in advance for your

time, talents, and generosity.
