Who is Jesus Christ? God and Man?

The Tradition of the Church teaches us that Jesus is fully human. Jesus was born of a woman, grew up, lived and died as all men do. Jesus is also divine, the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, resurrected and ascended to heaven.

Jesus has existed from before "the beginning" of all things. He pre-exists creation and history. We profess at Mass in the Nicene Creed that all things were made through Him and that He is, "one in being with the Father." Truly, to be Chris-tian is to believe that Jesus is divine.

He was like us in all things except for sin. Because Jesus is God, He could never sin. Sin is acting in opposition to the will of God. He also was sinless to fulfill the Scriptural prophesy of the suffering servant, or the Paschal lamb.

HYPOSTATIC UNION

Over time, people have tried to explain this anomaly of Jesus' two natures by either denying one of them, saying He had both but not all at once or that He had different natures at different times. In 451 at the Council of Chalcedon , the bish-ops explained that the natures of Jesus are found in one person (or one hypostasis in the Greek spoken at the council). This union is what we call the "hypostatic union" and it's the term we use to explain the union of two natures in one person found in the second person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ.

Without Jesus' humanity, the crucifixion could not have happened. Without Jesus' divinity, Jesus' death is insufficient because it would have been no different than the death of any man. This is why the hypostatic union matters. This is why it's so important to realize that Jesus is really the "God-man." This combination dignifies every mundane action of Jesus as done by not only man but also by God. Without this union, the meaning and importance of everything Jesus did is lessened.

CAPSTONE MISSION TRIP TO TIJUANA The first mission trip of 2018 is right around the corner and we need vol-unteers!! The trip will be December 30-January 6, 2018. This is a great opportunity for college students to attend as they will still be on Christmas break. There are jobs for all skill levels; from building shelves and doing electrical, to sorting clothes and holding babies. This is a great opportunity to help a bunch of kids who, through no fault of their own, have been left orphans. Help us improve their lives by joining us for this unforgettable week. Your life will never be the same again! The cost of $450 covers almost all expenses, including transpor-tation, accommodations and most food, as well as helping to pay for the building materials. For more information go to www.capstonemissions.org or to sign up - call or email Debby Miciak at [email protected] or (208)308-3296.

FLOCKNOTE HELPFUL HINT Did you know that when you receive a Flocknote text that you can save that number in your contacts? I saved the par-ish text as “St. Paul’s Flocknote”. Now, whenever a text comes in, I see who it is from. I do that with each group. “School Flocknote.” “Lector Flocknote” etc. Makes things easier.

How to be More Welcoming at Mass

With the holidays approaching please consider when selecting your seating to move to the middle

of the pew allowing for parishioners who arrive after you to sit on the ends.

This show of welcoming will allow families to find seating without having to climb over those already seated and send the message to them that there is always room for them in the house of our Lord.
