During the Wednesday, April 10 Lenten service, we will be treated to guest speaker Tim Godfrey’s The Trial of Jesus from a Lawyer’s Perspective.

This presentation focuses on the trial of Jesus at the hands of the religious and civil authorities in Jerusalem. It draws upon the narrative of scripture, from a legal perspective, including an examina-tion of Jewish and Roman law, as well as our own justice system.

“It hopes to explore how we per-ceive the proceedings through our modern lens,” said Godfrey, “as well as how Jesus of Nazareth’s comtemporaries may have under-stood what transpired prior to his death and resurrection.”

This presentation was initially developed by a former mayor of St. Paul, then continued and en-hanced by Godfrey’s father, Hon.

Otis H. Godfrey, Jr., who served as a judge in Ramsey County.

“He gave this speech, often during Lent, for nearly 30 years,” said Godfrey. “I recently modified and updated my father’s notes, and have presented my version of this program for the past two Lenten seasons.”

Godfrey is an attorney who has been practicing law in Minnesota for 32 years. Born and raised in St. Paul, he is a 1983 graduate of Car-leton College in Northfield and a 1987 graduate of William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.

Currently working for Wolters Kluwer, with offices in Minneapolis and St. Cloud, Godfrey previously had a private practice in St. Paul as Godfrey Law Offices for 25 years.

He is a long-time member of House of Hope Presbyterian

Church in St. Paul, where he currently serves as an elder of the church and has served as a deacon. He is also a Mason and a long-time member of Ancient Landmark Lodge No. 5 in St. Paul. He’s also enjoys working as a volunteer youth athletics coach in hockey, baseball and soccer for the past 24 years.

OLD BUSINESS:•Bell Tower Painting: We are assessing quotes gath-ered by Mike Schroeder, but have tabled the painting of the Bell Tower until weather accommodates and warms up for good.

•Cultivating Generous Congregations: the “CGC” team continues to work together, gather with their coach and area congregations to brainstorm, learn, and discuss ways to cultivate a more sustainable culture of generosity at St. Paul’s. Implementations of the team’s work so far include: Capital Campaign 2.0 presentations (building), creating a Welcome Team to foster belonging immediately and authenti-cally for newest members, acquisition and utilization of smart TV for fellowship hall as effective tool for storytelling and communication, made intentional moves to make building more accessible to commu-nity organizations and functions (ex. Changemakers, baby and wedding showers, craft groups, Glacial Ridge Conference, and 4-H), expanded methods for receiving gifts (GiveMN.org, Amazon Smile), and hope to implement a few other practices for culti-vation, like having Luther Crest attendees tell their

stories of experience. So far, these practices and this intentionality appear to be effective as there is a correlation between sustained and increased giving and the inception of CGC work which started in August 2018.

•4 Sided Cork Board Display: Is up and displayed with church and com-munity information.

•Glacial Ridge Conference: Pastor Joe stated this was a successful meeting despite low numbers with 33 people in attendance. The average attendance is about 80 people. Thanks to WELCA for serving!

•New Office Chairs - Pastor Joe stated that the new chairs are not here yet, but coming in soon. He stat-ed he would have an Invoice soon. Approximate cost is $210 per chair.

•Landscaping: Council decided we will talk about this at a later date. The weather has been hard on the landscaping this year and Bob visited with some-one who would be able to give us ideas and recom-mendations. The council discussed planning a work-ing day in the future.

•Parsonage updates: Dennis would like to see if sid-ing can come off and install more insulation on the outside wall, parsonage windows are dated (quote around $5,000 for windows). $5000 expenditures and above require a congregational vote. Another priority would be a water softener. EcoWater esti-mated $900 which includes a 50% discount for the church. $1600 remains available for other parson-age repairs after a motion passed on the EcoWater softener.

**Motion made by Ron to purchase a new water softener from EcoWater for $900 (estimate) for the parsonage - 2nd by Randy out of the Maintenance and Repairs fund. MOTION PASSED.**

NEW BUSINESS:•New Sign for Church: Electronic signage was dis-cussed for church events and announcements. Sam received an estimate of  $14,000 from a new compa-ny wanting to give us a bid, drastically higher than hoped. The new sign will be discussed along with the new parking lot closer to the date of the road con-struction in 2020/2021 in front of the church.

•Re-stripe parking lot- Sam is going to borrow a parking lot striping machine from work and will be able to re-stripe the parking lot.

Inclement weather notices

March Council meeting minutes continued from page 3

Page 6 • St. Paul’s Messenger

•Defibrillator Training- Jennifer Lundblad will com-plete a defibrillator training at a future date of her convenience (TBA).

•Fundraiser for General Youth Ministries (specifical-ly Harold Anderson Fund)- The council discussed a fundraiser in partnership with Windspire. During the fundraiser, the families of youth and church mem-bers would sell tickets for a chance to win a trip. Sam stated that the South Dakota Fire Department did this fundraiser, and was very successful. Wind-spire only works with nonprofits. Sam will do more research and check into potential approvals we may need in order to do a raffle as a fundraiser. Sam suggested this would be a good fundraiser for the month of May 2019. The winner would be picked on June 7th?

•Carol Weisel accepted the cleaning position. $75/cleaning, no modifications to job current description.

•Coin counter? Coins are the only form of currency that is unaccounted for at this time before it goes to the bank. Pastor Joe and Lori will check online for a coin counter and what the potential cost would be. No motion made, but there was general consensus among the council, specifically the Trustees, to pur-chase one as a general office supply.

•Annual Meeting Review- Annual meeting was well attended this year, and briefly reviewed through Kori Gullickson’s January 20 minutes.

•Wishlist Item Added: Restroom flooring in Sunday School wing (both rooms).

•Thank Yous: From Someplace Safe for the $500 donation, from SW MN Synod for the  $847 donation in noisy offerings, from the Synod Counsel for the mission support donation of $3000, and from the ELCA donation to the General Fund of $250.

•Good Friday (April 19th) Council discussed the pos-sibility of a rotation between Lowry Covenant and SPLC. This may be a good idea for fellowship with our members and theirs. The average Good Friday attendance at SPLC is about 60 people. Rotation would make Good Friday service (potentially) at Lowry Covenant Church this year. Pastor Joe will discuss additional details with Pastor Andy at Lowry Covenant.

•Welcome Team forming to meet and greet newest members: A welcome team has formed and will start reaching out to new SPLC families with a goal to set up a meet and greet and provider resources that would be helpful for new members. This ministry will continue throughout 2019 in experimental phase and if so discerned will be finalized with terms and nomi-nations by the next Annual Meeting, 2020.

•Worship Cancellation Procedures: Weather Relat-ed Worship Cancellation Policy & Procedures have been created. Decision to cancel will be collaborative between Pastor and Council President. The process of announcing cancellation will be done through council leaders, office secretary, pastor, and leaders of various ministries. Attempts will be made to reach local radio stations, and cancellation notices will be posted onto the church Facebook Page, the church website, and via email to all the available email con-tacts to our church secretary. Also, a standing an-nouncement on our church newsletters will encour-age members to seek out Facebook and the Website for weather related announcements.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:•Next Meeting April 4th, 2019 @ 6:30PM

•New member Sunday is this Sunday 03/10/2019 (church cancelled, new member Sunday is 04/07/2019
