Dear Friends, Our Thanksgiving Feasting this week provides us a wonderful

opportunity to take a break from the endless cycle of rising, showering, going to off to work, responsibly doing a job, coming home, having supper, getting things set for the next day, and then going back to bed. And yet, the bottom line of living is that much (most!) of it is routine. And that routine is something we have to befriend. The rhythm of the ordinary is the deepest wellspring from which to draw joy and meaning. The author Kathleen Norris who wrestles with the challenge of routine comes to the conclusion that “the clean simple appreciation of ordinary, daily things, is a treasure like none on earth.” If we are ever to capture that treasure we need to tap into the spiritual side of our being, and help our children and youth to grow in spiritual development. We have to carve out time and space to recognize God’s Spirit dwelling deep within. We have to let ourselves be caught up in the overwhelming and unfailing love of God.

Paul Simon, popular singer from a bygone era, in an old 1970’s song entitled, An American Tune, sings about coping with confusion, mistakes, betrayal, and other events that shatter our innocence. He ends a rather sad ballad quite peacefully with these words: "Still tomorrow's gonna be another working day, and I'm trying to get some rest. That's all I'm trying, is to get some rest." Sometimes obedience to that imperative is what saves our sanity. There's a lot to be said for being a contented, little person, anchored in the rhythms of the ordinary. In the midst of the rhythms of the ordinary and in the company of Jesus, we can have life to the full. Discover that treasure and happiness will be yours and you will have cause to be thankful… every day.

There are a lot of internet sites that offer proposals for developing an attitude of gratitude. I looked at several of them: “60 Things to be Thankful for in Life”; “201 reasons for Gratitude;” “7 Ways to be Thankful Everyday...” I appreciated one author’s closing suggestion for those to whom gratitude does not come easily: FAKE THANKFULNESS. He explains it this way:

Philosophers have long known that as the mind goes, so go the emotions. A pithier way to say that would be, we become what we think. Along with neurological chemistry, people with depression are often caught in “negative feedback loops.” Someone feels negative, so they think—i.e., tell themselves—negative thoughts. Those negative thoughts reinforce the original negative feelings leading to more negative thoughts… and down and down we go. Fortunately, that downward spiral also works in reverse, not by first feeling positive and then thinking positive thoughts, but instead by intentionally thinking positive thoughts that lead to genuinely positive emotions.

So, no matter how you get there, find a way to make a spirit of gratitude your daily mantra, your ever present prayer. The 13th century German mystic and theologian, Meister Eckhart, said: If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is ‘Thank You,’ it will be enough. May that be our prayer on Thanksgiving Day and every day. Fr. John Kasper, OSFS

Winter Nights

A huge thank you for all who helped make our Winter Nights service week very successful! Thanks to those who donated so many items & to those who served the homeless in person. It was timely as November is homeless awareness month.

Welcome into the Catholic Community Congratulations! This weekend we welcome the following child into our parish community through the waters of Baptism:

Milo Cruz Herrera

son of Daniel & Stephanie Herrera May our community embrace Milo and may our word and example be a reflection of God's love for him. Let us offer our joy-filled prayers and congratulations as a sign of our support and welcome!

NOVEMBER FOOD BASKET COLLECTION

Many thanks for your continued support throughout the year and remembering the monthly request for various items for the two food pantries that we support. The pantries deplete quickly so your generosity is a blessing that helps the pantries serve the people for which they exist.

Thanks to that support, Todd & Sandi Gritzer were happy to deliver 26 bags of flour, sugar, masa harina, cooking oil including a case of oil, and some surprises. They were delighted to be able to fill the shelves for a short while!

Our annual December Food Bag drive quickly approaches!

NOVEMBER AGENCY DISTRIBUTIONS Your generous support to the 5th Sunday Outreach collections and some monthly support, we were able send $1500.00 ($500.00 each) to the following agencies located within Contra Costa County: We Care in Concord, Youth Homes in Walnut Creek, and Bay Area Crisis Nursery in Concord. In some cases, these donations may help support a program that an agency may not be able to provide without such assistance. The agencies, and all those that benefit from their services, are so very thankful for your continuing support.

NOVEMBER SHELTER DINNER Monica Chappell and her awesome crew: Emmelie Woo, Mary King, Mimi Smith, Maria Claudia Terrien and Pat Henderson prepared Tamale Pie with ground beef and black beans, also served a fresh crisp salad for 100 people.

Casey Hanley and her son and Jim Fulton transported the food boxes and served the hungry and happy guests. We think this may be a new favorite…tamale pie!

Thank you to all of those involved, as well as those behind the scenes, to make this such a smooth rewarding experience. If you are interested in finding out more about possibly getting involved in this rewarding ministry, please contact Monica Chappell – [email protected] (new email address).
