Dear Friends, Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life. This year’s theme- Christ our Hope in Every Season of Life. One way our community can participate locally is by way of 40 Days For Life: You are invited to join in the 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil: forty days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, from Wednesday September 25th through Saturday, November 3rd to peacefully witness for the dignity and sanctity of life. We will be standing and peacefully praying during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside a local abortion facility in Walnut Creek (1357 Oakland Boulevard). Vigil hours are from 7am-7pm, and you are encouraged to join for an hour a day, an hour a week, or even an hour in total! Your prayerful presence makes a difference in witnessing for life and in helping to present options for women other than abortion. On Tuesday, September 24th, there will be a kick-off event at St. Mary’s Church gymnasium in Walnut Creek from 7:00-8:30pm. You are encouraged to come and hear powerful testimony for life! And, please help spread the word about this important and life-giving community outreach. If you’d like more information – and if you’d like to volunteer to join the prayer vigil, for an hour or more, please contact: [email protected] or call 925-984-7602. Thank you! Other opportunities and information for RESPECT LIFE month are available on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: https://www.respectlife.org/october Father John Kasper, OSFS

GREAT NEWS! Now that we have a beautiful commercial kitchen, plans are being made to resume the monthly Shelter Dinner meals that have been on hiatus while we were in the midst of construction. In past years, we used to prepare and transport the meals on the first Thursday of each month but we have now been asked to change to the third Monday of each month. Monica Chappell will be looking for “chefs” to shop for and prepare the meal and Ann Diemer will be looking for people interested in transporting and serving at the shelter. You can do the cooking or transporting as a family or with friends. We usually serve around 75 appreciative guests. If you haven’t been involved in the past, those that have will tell you that it is a fun and rewarding experience. Once a month, the “chef” plans and shops for the ingredients for the meal. The meal is then prepared in our kitchen and placed in transport boxes to keep the food at a safe temperature for transport. If you are interested in being a chef, please contact Monica Chappell at [email protected]. Transporting and serving consists of picking up the food at our kitchen and driving to the shelter in North Concord and serving to the guests, usually a couple of hours (4:15 – 6:30 pm) If you are interested in transporting & serving, please contact Ann Diemer at [email protected]. Winter Nights shelter sign ups will be held the weekend of October 12/13...to serve at Orinda Community Church from Tues Nov 5 through Sunday morning Nov 10th. If any questions, please contact Jan Saillard 847.736.0419 or Karen Rose Kalvass 925.295.4669. Our annual "Share the Warmth" dr ive will be held the weekend of Oct 19 & 20th. Please look through your drawers, closets & garages for anything warm! Coats, blankets, hats, mittens, tents, boots, anything warm!!!! Please contact Karen Rose Kalvass with any questions at 925.285.4669.

YOUTH MINISTRY at St. Perpetua

Teens gather twice this week for Confirmation and Youth Group. Confirmation starts at 6:30; Youth Group starts at 7:30. Both gatherings are in the Community Center. Confirmation gathers on Sunday, September 29 where Candidates look at how “Life is Choices” and how our year of preparation in Confirmation can help them to become better decision makers. The introduction to our preparation demonstrates for the Candidates that God’s way and the way of the world are very different. Candidates conclude the evening with an invitation to choose to walk with God. Youth Group gathers On Monday, September 30 for our continued conversation on TRUST! Engaging with Faith where teens have the opportunity to look at Jesus, God’s mercy, and the challenge of living the good and holy life Jesus calls us to. Our initial gatherings show teens that even though hard times come along, God always loves us. The difficult times are the times we can most rely on the saving love that God has shown us in Jesus. Our TRUST focus this evening looks at the sacraments of “healing” and the power they offer to Catholics as we carry on with our everyday lives. Teens, come check us out, bring a friend.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Here it is again, that marvelous story Jesus tells of Dives---which means “rich man,” and is a made-up name for the guy Jesus purposely wanted to keep nameless---and Lazarus, whom Jesus names many times in his story, just in case we missed the point that he who was ignored in life goes into heaven with his name preserved for eternal memory. Speaking of names, don’t miss this: Dives ignored Lazarus, even as he begged right outside his door in the most desperate of circumstances. But once Dives was in eternal torment, he all of sudden remembered the name of that beggar whom I’ll bet he didn’t call by name a single time in life. That really gives the lie to what we often say about those who are poor: I don’t know them, and I can’t help those I don’t know. I’ll bet Dives made that same excuse, but it turns out he DID know his name all along. Lazarus was so familiar to him, in fact, that he took his name into hell and tried to use it to get himself out. Talk about privilege. Dives was in hell, for heaven’s sake, and he still thought he could snap his fingers and make Lazarus---comforted forever in the very bosom of Abraham---his errand boy. The thing is, Dives made his own destiny of torment. He built it, day by day, through his willful ignorance and malignant neglect of the man dying at his door. How are you building your destiny? First Timothy exhorts us to “compete well in the faith.” Okay, I’m puttting on patience, gentleness and faith. See you at the finish line. Game on.

How are you competing for the destiny of life on high

PARKING With the completion of our community center and new striping of the parking lots in front of the church and school it is critical that we only park in marked designated parking spots. As per fire code, we are NOT allowed to park elsewhere and could get fined for not obeying this code. If all spots are taken, please use the upper lot. Thanks so much for your cooperation and understanding.
