A Legacy of Heartache
After 41 years, as of January 22nd, of anguish and sorrow in the name of choice, Roe vs. Wade is far from settled law. The following is from an article for Columbia magazine by Carolee McGrath recalling 40 years of legal-ized abortion. THE DECISION This January marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states. Prior to 1973, abortion was prohibited in many states and limited in others. Roe v. Wade was based on a legal “right of privacy,” which the justices claimed was implicitly found in the U.S. Constitution. “Legally, logically, Roe should have never been issued. It misconstrued the way the Supreme Court is supposed to go about defining constitutional rights,” explained Helen Alvaré, an associate professor of law at George Mason University in Virginia. Alvaré has spent her career promoting the sanctity of life and marriage. She worked for the U.S. bish-ops’ conference at its general counsel and pro-life offices, and has assisted the Holy See on pro-life and women’s issues. She believes that the pro-abortion agenda has hurt the women’s movement. Four decades later, abortion remains a divisive political issue. “The question of ‘where do you stand on Roe v. Wade?’ has become this huge question,” Alvaré said. “It not only determines whether a particular person is nominated to the federal court, but is also is a big fac-tor in who to vote for.” On the same day that the court handed down the decision on Roe v. Wade, justices also gave the opinion on a companion case, Doe v. Bolton. The second decision overturned many of Georgia’s restrictions on abortion and stated that a woman may obtain an abortion after viability if her “health” was at risk. The decision broadened the definition of women’s health to include a wide range of categories -- physical, emo-tional, familial, psychological and age -- effectively legalizing abortion throughout pregnancy. “They turned to abortion as the answer,” said Alvaré, “Any abortion, any reason, and time. For their perspective, this became the baseline.” If Roe v. Wade is overturned, states would regain the power to implement greater restrictions on abortion, which would no longer be considered a fundamental right. “Everybody knows from genetic science and ultrasound technology, and has for quite a while now, that what is in the mother’s womb is a human child,” said Alvaré. “Chillingly, that’s not the issue. The issue before the Supreme Court is whether there are five justices who think that the federal constitution simply doesn’t speak on abortion.”

On December 6, 2013, Sister Magdalena Dudenhoeffer successfully received her license to teach. Happy to have her undergraduate studies behind her, she was sent out on mission to Stillwater, Minnesota. Sr. Mag-dalena will be a special education tutor and will also teach 6th grade religion for this semester at St. Croix Catholic School. She joins 4 other Nashville Dominicans and they reside in St. Dominic Convent in Stillwater. She asks your continued prayers for her as she begins her first job as full time teacher. Pilgrimages to Medjugorje, Rome, Lourdes.
We have pilgrimages scheduled to St. James Church in Medjugorje, Rome and Lourdes this year. Bosica Bartulica (who grew up in the Medjugorje area) will be conducting the pilgrimages. The dates are: May 28 – June 9 for $2,145 to Med-jugorje only; to Rome & Medjugorje June 9 - 21 for $3,345; and to Lourdes & Medjugorje October 1 – 13 for $3,295. WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
FEBRUARY 1-2, 2014
In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candle-mas Day; the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life is transferred to the following Sunday in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church.
World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated on the weekend of February 1-2, 2014. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation.

The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name and the Childhood of Jesus. This week we enter into Ordinary Time once again in the Church liturgy. There is nothing "ordinary" about the Catholic Church, though. You often will hear the word "liturgy". Sacred liturgy is the public worship we give to Christ, who is the head of the Church. Christ in turn gives worship to God, the Father in Heaven. Sacred liturgy includes the Holy Mass, the seven sacraments, our daily prayers, the Rosary, etc. The whole purpose of the liturgy is to give glory to God. The Church has always recognized the power of the saints to pray for us. This week as we enter "ordinary time" in the Church liturgy, we remember Saints Fa-bian and Sebastian on Monday, St. Agnes on Tuesday, Saints Vincent and Marianne on Thursday, and St. Francis de Sales on Friday. Reading about the lives of these saints gives us an example of how to love Jesus as they did and to serve others as they did.
As the prophet Isaiah proclaims in the first reading, the Lord continues to remind us that we are his servants. Imagine the Lord speaking these words to you personally: “You are my servant. Through you I show my glory. I formed you as my servant from your mother’s womb. I will make you a light so that you may shine the light of my salvation everywhere you go, and reveal my glory to everyone you encounter. I will give you the strength to do this. I will give you confidence. Heed my words, for I have spoken to you.” What would your response be to the Lord? Would it be different from the response you give the Lord now?
