  • 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 26, 2018

Scripture Insights In life we face many important choices, and to-day’s readings illustrate some of them. In the Letter to the Ephesians, Paul speaks about the foundational choice man and woman make when they commit themselves totally to each other: “and the two shall become one flesh.” In their self-sacrificing love for each other in marriage, we glimpse the depths of Christ’s self-sacrificing love for the Church. The book of Joshua presents the foundational choice the people of Israel face on entering the Promised Land: “Decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amo-rites?” Memories of God’s faithful love, mercy, and care influence their decision. “Therefore, we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.” The people renew themselves to the covenant re-lationship with God. At the conclusion to the Bread of Life discourse, Jesus asks his followers to make their foundational choice for or against him. So many were shocked by Jesus’ words and walked away when he identified himself as the “Bread that came down from heaven” and then went further by adding “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you.” So Jesus asked his own disciples if they too wished to leave. As usual, Peter re-plies on behalf of the others, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” As God committed himself to his people, Jesus committed himself to us, the new people of God, through his Death and Resurrection. The self-sacrificing love in Christian Marriage witnesses to God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. • Hoe does Paul’s call to love in marriage show

that husband and wife are equal partners? • What in the Gospel narrative shows that Pe-

ter’s commitment to Jesus is a response to the gift of faith he has received?

    • Reflect on your own relationship and commit-ment to the Lord. In what ways are you able to confess with Peter: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

    OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

    We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence,

    murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to

be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady

of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF INFECTION School in now in session and your child is in close contact with their peers (hugging, kissing, swap-ping, pacifiers and bottles). Follow these tips in teaching your children to protect themselves against the many infectious diseases they may come in contact with: Wash hands: teach your children to wash their hands with warm soap and water for 15-20 seconds before and after meals and after going to the bathroom. Use hand sanitizers after handling classroom objects and toys (you are asked to send hand sanitizer to school, make sure your child knows to use it). Hand washing on is the #1 way to prevent the spread of may infec-tions. Sneezing/coughing: Teach your children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue (throw the tissue away immediately) or cough and sneeze into their sleeve. (Many infection are air borne and are spread through coughing and sneezing). Encourage your child to stray away from people who are sick. Keep your child at home and away from other people when they are sick (sending a sick child to school eposes others to viruses and diseases, they are in a closed space in close contact with their peers. Have a child care plan in the event your child becomes ill). Remember to have your child immunized with the FLU vaccine.
