Parish Information

"And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." Supernatural communication was nothing new for Mary. The angel

Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her when she agreed to bear God's Son. Her husband Joseph also had a kind of divine

intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin Elizabeth had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was "the mother of

my Lord" (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthly shepherds appears at her door with a message from heaven: that the

Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the authenticity of their message. She took the words to

heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all.

What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God,

did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Sometimes, He revealed Himself to them in order to reveal Himself to her.

And God does the same with us.

It's easy to daydream about having our own personal revelation from God, to hear His voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn't the standard pattern of God's operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God's voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seeking to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others.

A Happy and Blessed 2017, dearest parishioners! On behalf of Fr. Riz and the parish family, may the Child Jesus bless you anew, Our Blessed Mother keep you within the mantle of her protection and St. Joseph guide and protect you in your new year’s life adventures.

Did you know that the 1st of January is not just celebrating the New Year but a feast of Our Lady? New Year is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, the Theotokos (Greek which means God-bearer). It is one of our treasured Catholic Marian dogmas which include: Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity and Assumption. I do hope that as evangelized Catholics we understand well what these dogmas affirm and teach from Scripture and Tradition: Mary is the special, most beautiful handiwork of God, preserved from all stain of sin, inviolate and incorruptible all because of the merits of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and hope for all of humanity!

Jesus and Mary are inseparable. What happened to Jesus, Mary will always share. Jesus is truly human but without sin (Cf. Hebrews 4:15). Thus, Mary has to be Immaculate Conception. Jesus Most Pure taught us “Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8) and none of his ribs shall be broken (Psalm 34:21). Thus, Mary’s Perpetual Virginity. And, Jesus rose (glorified body and soul) from the dead. Thus, Mary is Virgo Assumpta! And the good news! We are invited to believe and share in their passion and glory. “If you love me, keep my commands (John 14:15). “Do whatever He (Jesus) tells you” (John 2:5).

Mother of God is one of the titles given to the Blessed Virgin, her principal title in the Greek Church. It dates back to the 3rd century and was probably first used by Origen and was subsequently accepted by the Greek Fathers of the Church. While opposed by Nestorius and his followers on the basis that it was incompatible with the full humanity of Christ, it received the enthusiastic endorsement of St. Cyril of Alexandria and was officially sanctioned by the Councils of Ephesus in 431 and Chalcedon in 451.

Mary is the Mother of God (Greek Theotokos, Luke 1:43) since “by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:35) she conceived in her virginal womb and brought into the world Jesus Christ who is of one being with the Father and the Holy Spirit. In other words, Jesus conceived in the womb of Mary is both True God and True Man. As such, she is not only the mother of the man Jesus, but also of the “Son of the Most High God” (Luke 1:32).

An ideal answer to this teaching is found in the Second Vatican Council’s declaration concerning Mary in its document Lumen Gentium (Light of Nations) Chapter 8 Number 56:

The Father of mercies willed that the consent of the predestined Mother should precede the Incarnation so that, just as a woman contributed to death, so also a woman should contribute to life. This contrast was verified in outstanding fashion by the Mother of Jesus. She gave to the world that very Life which renews all things, and she was enriched by God with gifts befitting such a role. It is no wonder, then, that the usage prevailed among the holy Fathers whereby they called the Mother of God entirely holy and free from all stain of sin, fashioned by the Holy Spirit into a kind of new substance and new creature. Adorned from the first instant of her conception with the splendors of an entirely unique holiness, the Virgin of Nazareth is, on God’s command, greeted by an angel messenger as “full of grace” (cf. Lk. 1:28). To the heavenly messenger she replies: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word” (Lk. 1:38). By thus consenting to the divine utterance, Mary, a daughter of Adam, became the Mother of Jesus. Embracing God’s saving will with a full heart and impeded by no sin, she devoted herself totally as a handmaid of the Lord to the person and work of her Son. In subordination to him and along with him, by the grace of almighty God she served the mystery of redemption. Rightly, therefore, the holy Fathers see her as used by God not merely in a passive way but as cooperating in the work of human salvation through free faith and obedience.

Cell phone apps allow for hiding photos and messages - A review of a young person’s cell phone text messages may provide a parent or caring adult with information such as who your child talks to, where they are going, and what they’re doing. Unfortunately, all of that may be in the past. Today, some new cell phone text messaging services keep cell phone texting activity increasingly private. In order to protect young people, one must stay current and re-connect with ever changing technology. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Vanishing, Self-Destructing Texting, and Electronic Communication,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
