O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

(America the Beautiful, verse 1)

I’m just back from a 2,300 mile round trip to my parents’ home in Salina, Kansas. In fields along the interstate, the wheat had been recently harvested, but corn,

soybeans and milo were still growing. The trip reminded me of how blessed the USA is with rich soils and the environment to grow food for our own people as well as food to export. Many nations of the world lack fertile soils and the right environment to grow enough food for even their own people to survive. As with most blessings, we often take this one for granted.

As you count your blessings, remember to contribute to the Lutheran World Hunger Appeal. This fund not only provides food for

hungry people, but also helps them with the resources to feed themselves and others.

Psalm 33:12 reads, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Let us show the world that God is our Lord by continuing to be generous.

We Are Not AloneOver 600 congregations have successfully taken their first and/or second vote to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since it adopted changes at its national meeting two years ago. The number of members leaving the ELCA now totals 298,892. This does not include individuals who left their ELCA church to join a different church body or start a new congregation.

In August of last year (only 11 months ago) the NALC, North American Lutheran Church, was formed as an alternative to the ELCA. According to the NALC web page 223 churches have joined the NALC and an additional seventeen, including St. Peter Lutheran Church, have taken the first vote to join.

As I write this, I have just returned from a beautifully inspirational week at Lutheridge. I thank each and every one of you for giving me the chance to continue my education and to talk to other music directors to share worship ideas. It was really a remarkable week. One of the octavos that we worked on and sang for the closing Eucharist service Friday night was “Great and Glorious” by Franz Joseph Haydn. We used this phrase all week long. So if any of you ask Pastor Dave how he is doing, I hope he will now say “great AND glorious.”

The Adult Choir clinician was Robert Hobby from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I learned a lot from Bob but his example spoke louder than anything else. He has been published by many choral houses, commissioned to do great works, but he never loses the humbleness of the faith that is so strong and quite apparent in him. Even as a world- renowned organist, he told us that he ASPIRES to play a perfect worship service every time but has never played one. Bob is ever aware that the saints are all around us and are present in our worship. He stressed that we should remain connected in this way with all those who have gone on before AND those that are yet to come in our Christian body of worship.

So, how would our ancestors rate us? Do we worship today as faithfully as we can? Do we come on Easter and Christmas only? Do we think about our loved ones that have passed on every time we come to worship? We all should, for they, with God’s almighty hand, were the foundation of this church; a church founded on the word of God and the principles of the Ten Commandments. With all that is going on in the world and the church today, we need to call on the strength of the faith that was passed down from our ancestors to remind us that we need that very same strong faith to see us through and over all obstacles. The Lord and the church need our willing hands. Working together, as ONE, in the mission that has been set before us is truly a privilege and a return of thanks to our heavenly father. Last important question that was asked of us at Lutheridge: “How have you been the face of Christ to someone today?” Just coming to worship is NOT the answer God expects. May we all strive to do the work of Christ in all we do. In Christian Service,

Kathy

WORSHIP NOTES (continued)August 28 is Sunday School Rally Day. Kathy Havird is in need of some young singers and some instrumentalists for the 10:30 a.m. service. Please contact Kathy if your child would like to be included in the music portion of this service. Or email her at [email protected]. We will have a couple of songs done by the children and the gist of the theme for this Rally Day is World Missions. More info on this will be coming from Pastor Greg.

Is there any interest in starting a Cherub Choir this fall? This would be an age group of 5 to 8 year olds and would just sing during the school year. They would also be learning to play bells and drums. Rehearsals would be held on Sunday afternoons with some time flexibility. Please email Kathy and give her any ideas you might have for the pros or cons or preferred rehearsal time involved in starting this group.

The next Worship & Music Committee meeting will be August 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We need involvement and feedback from the congregation. If you are interested in adding your opinions to the upcoming fall and holiday worship services and events, you are urged to come. Fresh ideas and comments for the good of our church are always welcome. Suggestions can also be written down and put in Kathy Havird’s mail box by the secretary’s office.

Pastor Greg Moore, Director of Christian EducationChristian Education Ministry News & Upcoming Events

Vacation Bible School. 2011. “Shake It Up!” Again I want to say thank you to each and every one of you who gave of yourselves to our VBS ministry this year. Whether you helped in the preparation for the event, donated food or other items, or participated in the event, you were a God-given critical instrument for the blessing for many people in our VBS 2011! The final participation numbers from preparation to attending VBS are 74 children, 15 adults, in our classes, at least 49 youth and adult leaders and assistants. I consider myself blessed by the Holy Spirit to have had so many enthusiastic students, leaders and assistants moved to be part of it. As I wrote in the last newsletter, VBS must be a congregation-wide event, not just a Christian Education Committee or Sunday School teachers’ event because it is the single largest ministry event we have at St. Peter. It was a congregation-wide event! I give thanks to God.

I have some extra VBS t-shirts to be given away. If you would like one please let me know, they are in a box in my office.

Children's Baptismal Dates. I am adding the children's baptismal dates to our Sunday School attendance sheets so teachers can mark / celebrate their students’ baptisms at Sunday School as they come up. Thank you Carolyn Frick who suggested I add this information to the rosters at this time.

Sunday School Rally Day 2011. Sunday August 28. The theme for Rally Day will be “Give Happily”, a social ministry / social mission concerns theme. The “Give Happily” theme is a product of our VBS, one of the days’ themes. We will provide offering boxes to the Sunday School students 4 weeks ahead of August 28, on July 31. Different charities will be assigned to each Sunday School class. In preparation for this fall’s semester the plan is for each Sunday School classroom to be painted over the summer after VBS. We had approx. 200 people at the lunch last year and about 30 plates were picked up for folks who could not attend the lunch. We will plan for this again this year. All teachers in our Christian Education ministry will be asked to come forward and be installed at the 10:30 am worship service. This will include Sunday School and Children’s Church teachers and anyone else involved in teaching the Christian faith at St. Peter. We will again plan to provide seeds to take home and plant as we did last year.. Club 3,4,5. Leaders: Wendy and Mike Bell, Amy and Brannon Taylor. Club 3,4,5 is a group for children in grades 3-5, also welcoming second graders that are ready for this ministry, gathering the 2nd Saturday of each month The next gathering of Club 3,4,5 will be August 13, 9:30 am – 12:00 noon, the “Back To School Bash.”

SPECKs. Leaders: Rayleen Hollis and Denise Koon. St. Peter Evangelical Church Kids is a children’s ministry program for ages 2 through grade 2, gathering the 2nd Saturday of each month. Next gathering of SPECKs will be August 13 at 9:30 am – 1:00 pm, the “Back to School Party.” We are planning for splash pools and the waterslide for the children at this event.

Christian Education Committee – Next Meeting, Monday. August 1 at 6:30 pm. Primary agenda item will be to continue planning for Rally Day celebration.
