A New School Year, A New Name

Blessings in a Backpack has truly been a blessing for years to children of the Marble Falls schools, providing students who are faced with food insecurity in their lives, a package of non-perishable foods to help them through the weekends when they don't have access to the nutrition they receive from free or reduced price meals at their schools.

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven?” - Acts 1:8-11

As their friend and pastor departs, the disciples find themselves looking up to heaven and wondering…”okay…now what?” Jesus left lots of departing words…from the great commission to go and baptize, to the call to be witnesses to all they have seen and heard. Yet, in the moment when departing finally comes, it is no easier to step toward what is next, even when the synod gives you a step-by-step transition process to guide you.

Pastor Casey has departed to her new call, given us a sending message on being “blessed to be a blessing,” and left us with grace-filled memories that have spanned the generations. Like the disciples, I wonder if we might learn more about who WE ARE CALLED TO BE in seeing another depart.

After Pastor Casey shared with me in early summer the possibility of taking a new call, I wondered where to look to make sense of this for me and us as St. Peter’s, because one of the great gifts and joys of ministry for me has been working alongside Pastor Casey. Eventually, I found my way to our purpose statement…Together, BOLDLY living and sharing God’s grace with all. I wondered if Pastor Casey’s own discernment was giving us all an image of what it looked like to live out our purpose statement…that “next” can be hard and filled with unknowns…that “next” will call us to new paths and places…that “next” will invite and challenge us to join God at work in a wider world…that living and sharing God’s grace will open us to BOLD new “nexts” with others.

Then I looked at our guiding values…and two of them really hit me: “God frees us to change and grow” and “all people need God’s love.” What if we see Pastor Casey taking a new call as a way of living out these values we hold dear…these values we have agreed together to put in play in our own lives? Part of me in that moment felt like I was holding a couple sticks of dynamite, because I saw how these values are dangerous to the status quo…that they will call us to live risky with love…and to free and send others not mournfully, but with the joy that comes from BEING the community of faith God has created and called us to be.

If you haven’t read or wondered about our purpose statement and guiding principles lately, I invite you take another look at them. They are more than just words for Sunday morning or for when we gather at 1803 Highway 1431 West. They are words that are gospel dynamite, to BOLDLY step toward what is next. Here is a link to get refreshed on our purpose statement and guiding principles: http://stpetersmarblefalls.org/about-st-peters/ I will be looking to these values & purpose often as we move prayerfully toward what’s next. Peace, Pastor Vanicek

REFORMATION SUNDAYREFORMATION SUNDAYREFORMATION SUNDAYREFORMATION SUNDAY———— October 28thOctober 28thOctober 28thOctober 28th

In 1517, Martin Luther posted his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in

Wittenberg. That action sparked a series of reforms in theological understanding of grace, liturgical practice, accessibility of scripture in the common language, and much more. But the sixteenth-century Reformation was not a one-time event. Reformation is ongoing. The church of Christ always stands in need of reform. As in Luther's age, so in ours: God's word is alive, speaks truth, and surprises with grace. Ancient texts speak to contemporary contexts to enliven our faith. Christ's truth sets us free for mission and ministry in Jesus' name.

Help us celebrate by wearing red for this special day.

Debbie & I thank you for your gift to the recently established Tiemann Endowment Fund for Leadership Development. We are honored that the synod created this endowment in recognition of 39 years of ministry and service in the Southwestern Texas Synod, including eighteen years in the Office of Bishop. Over those years it has become clear that the spiritual and professional development of lay and rostered leaders is integral to the mission of Christ’s Church. Your gift will allow future bishops to use the proceeds of this legacy to support that growth in perpetuity. (We sent $1,500.00 as part of an Endowment Fund Distribution)

God bless you for your gists, Ray & Debbie Tiemann

Dear St. Peter's Family, Thank you for the wonderful last Sunday at St. Peter's! I was truly touched by the outpouring of support not only for the past 15 years in this congregation but also for my future ministry at Triumphant Love. From the party, slideshow, and videos to the thoughtful gifts and cards, from the tearful goodbyes and special lunches to the choir's closing benediction and Snip Its quilt, I felt such love and gratitude for our work together. I am excited to use my spa day and relax! I can't wait to design my new stole, and I will think of you and give thanks for you each time I wear it. You have made a lasting impact on our family's faith journey, and we are grateful!

May God continue to bless you and the ministry you do together in Christ's name in the years to come!

In Christ, Pastor Casey [email protected]

We would like to thank the members of the choir and congregation for their words of sympathy, flowers, memorials and cards in the loss of Don's mother, Elsie. With kind regards, Don and Faith Trapp

WORSHIP & BIBLE STUDIES

IN & AROUND ST. PETER’S

This Is My Story, This Is My SongThis Is My Story, This Is My SongThis Is My Story, This Is My SongThis Is My Story, This Is My Song began Sunday, September 2nd

Many of us know this familiar and beloved chorus from “Blessed Assurance.” It speaks of a deeply held truth that “this story” that is the Bible is also our story and our song. “Blessed Assurance” has been called “the archetypal gospel song” because it belongs to a certain genre in church music but also because it shares the gospel – the good news – of Jesus Christ.

The Narrative Lectionary is a 4-year cycle of texts for Sunday morning worship. It was designed by professors at Luther Seminary so that each school year we will hear the entire biblical story from Creation in Genesis to the Coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts. We hope that as our preaching sweeps across the whole of the Bible, our stories might be better centered in God’s story.

Their Story Is Our StoryTheir Story Is Our StoryTheir Story Is Our StoryTheir Story Is Our Story (September 2nd – October 28th) During the Fall we will hear stories of our Biblical ancestors: God’s promise to Noah, God’s blessing of all people through Abraham & Sarah, and God’s forgiveness of David & Bathsheba. As we hear their ancient stories perhaps we will recognize ourselves in them because their story is indeed our story and their God is indeed our God.

Building to Bless

As Chair of the Building Bless Campaign for St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, I want to thank the entire congregation for its work and contributions to the campaign.

We know the Building Committee is doing a diligent job in coming up with the final building proposal. We know that many of their choices are difficult and we appreciate their time and effort. We need to be thankful and pray for their deliberations.

The response of the congregation to Building to Bless was overwhelming with pledges of $1,041,323. Our original target was $750,000 with an outside target of $900,000. We surprised ourselves!!! So far we have received $343,897, which is 33% of our total pledges. Please follow the up to date results by the green on the thermometer in the weekly bulletin. The response has been very gratifying.

St. Peter’s Lutheran Congregation has been blessed with our commitment to the building proposal. I want to thank everyone involved with their involvement in this process and continued to support the Building to Bless Campaign.

Please pray for the continued support and progress of the Building to Bless Campaign.-Dale C. Moquist, Campaign Chair

St. Peter’s Lutheran School

We are off to a great start this fall at school! In September, children learned about how God made the world – the sun and stars, the land and water, vegetation, and animals. We have been studying our letters, working on number sense, and even had a visit from the Marble Falls Fire Department for fire

safety. The school is such a vibrant ministry of the church – the children are bright-eyed and so interested in learning! Thank you for your continued support! October special events will include a Muffins with Mommy celebration, a field trip to the Sweet Berry Farms Pumpkin Patch, and a Fall party! We are also getting our Vision & Hearing Screening complete thanks to some amazing volunteers from St. Peter’s!

We are looking forward to an awesome 2018-19 school year! - Tracy, Anna, Jeannie, Lindsay, and Audrey

FINANCIAL & ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

Sing with St. Peter’s Choir for Lessons and Carols Here is your opportunity to sing with the choir of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for our annual Lessons and Carols Concert/Service. This year’s service is Sunday, December 16, and we will sing at both the services that day.

I know that many cannot commit to singing in a choir throughout the year, and this would give you the opportunity to share your talent and not feel obligated to a long term commitment.

We rehearse on Wednesday evenings, beginning at 5:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Wednesday, October 18th will be our first look at some of the Lessons and Carols music. To begin with I spend about 30 to 40 minutes on the Christmas music, and then if you like, you can leave. As we get nearer to the 16th of December, more and more of our 90 minute rehearsal will involve the Lessons and Carols music. In addition to December 16th we also sing anthems from the Lessons and Carols service on December 2nd and December 23rd. We would love to have you join with us those Sundays as well. The choice is yours.

There are no auditions, (if you can find the door to the church, your in!) and we have rehearsal CD’s with all of your music, so you can easily become familiar with the tunes even when you are unable to attend a rehearsal or two or three.

Give yourself an early Christmas gift, and come join us. In addition to the great music of the season, we also have a pretty good time. Questions? Contact Don Trapp, [email protected] or 830-596-1325
