THE PARISH SHOWING OF THE MOVIE: UNPLANNED: Based on a True Story

(Rated R for some bloody/disturbing images, 150 minutes)

Plus a testimonial from a survivor of an abortion Sponsored by the Respect Life Group

OPEN TO THE PARISH SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2019 3:30 PM in the Parish Center

at Saint Dominic’s Church, Shortsville

“UNPLANNED, the movie”, brings an eye opening look inside the abortion industry through one woman’s

inspiring story of transformation. All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women.

She believed in a woman’s right to choose, and as one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she

was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions. Until the day she saw something that changed everything,

leading Abby Johnson to join her former enemies of “40 Days for Life and became one of the most

ardent pro-life advocates in America.”

Classes resume for all grades SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20.

FROM THE PASTOR Praised be Jesus Christ!

The month of October is traditionally dedicated to the Holy

of the United States. This Sunday we combine both commemorations by praying the rosary after each Mass for the legal protection of the unborn.

While the rosary has long been an important part of my own spiritual life (an especially key influence during my college years in teaching me how to really pray), I was recently convinced of the importance of devotion to the rosary as key to the success of a parish.

One of the greatest books on the rosary was written by St. Louis de Montfort in the early 1700 called “The Secret of the Rosary”. The book contains a brief account of a Danish priest who struggled in a difficult parish. The priest wrote:

I had preached as compellingly as I could, touching on many aspects of our Holy Faith, and using every argument I could possibly think of to get the people to amend their way of life. But in spite of all my efforts they went unconcernedly about their way as before; and it was then that I decided to preach the Holy Rosary. I told my congregations how precious it is and I taught them how to say it. I kept on preaching the Holy Rosary and the devotion took root in the parish. Six months later I was over-joyed to see that people had really changed for the better. How true it is that this God-given prayer has Divine power----the power to touch our hearts and to fill them with horror of sin and the love of virtue!

St. Louis de Montfont then adds his own assessment based on personal experience: I…have learned from my own experience that the Rosary has the power to convert even the most hardened hearts. I have known people who have gone to missions and who have heard sermons on the most terrifying subjects without being in the least moved; and yet, after they had, on my advice, started to say the Rosary every day they eventually became converted and gave themselves completely to God.

There are all sorts of similar stories throughout church history about how individuals and/or parishes were completely changed once they began the faithful recitation of the rosary.

Why is the rosary so powerful?

Ultimately because God so wills it to be powerful! It seems that He has endowed this particular prayer with certain special graces so that the individual who begins the regular recitation of the rosary often makes tremendous growth in their spiritual life in a very short time.

I think that the power of the rosary is also tied to the power of the Hail Mary prayer itself. The Son of God became man in Mary’s womb follow ing upon the Archangel Gabriel ’s greeting “Hail, full of grace!” That same greeting in the Hail Mary prayer often precedes moral conversion, thus allowing Christ to be reborn in souls.

During the month of October, from the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th until All Saints Day (Novemeber 1st) I would like to challenge each and every one of our parishioners to pray the rosary every day. If that is already your practice—praise God! If you have fallen away from the regular recitation of the rosary—now is your chance to jumpstart the habit again. If you have rarely or never prayed the rosary—there is no better time to start.

I’m just asking that you try it. It is only about a 15 minute per day commitment. My hope is that by the end of the month you won’t want to stop.

Let’s see what Our Lady can do for our parish by this simple but genuine act of love from our whole community.

In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,

Father Peter Van Lieshout

THE SPECIAL INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS for the month of October

EVANGELIZATION: That the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary "spring" in the Church.

OCTOBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY On October 7, we celebrate a well-loved memorial in honor of the Rosary, and according to a long-standing tradition, the entire month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. In the Rosary with its sequence of prayers and mysteries, we contemplate the Gospel in company with the Blessed Virgin Mary. As Saint Pope John Paul II wrote in 2002, “the Rosary . . . is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness . . . With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer”

(Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 1).

ELIZABETH MINISTRY Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach to women and families who have experienced the loss of a child through miscarriage, still-birth or infant death. The purpose of this ministry is to affirm, support, and encourage during this very difficult time. They provide comfort kits, resources, sympathy cards, one-on-one emotional & logistical support, and sponsor various events throughout the year, including Memorial Masses. One such Memorial Mass is being offered TODAY (Sunday), at Noon at St. Dominic Church. Elizabeth Ministry representatives will be present to distribute information and answer questions about this ministry.
