OCTOBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY
On October 7, we celebrate a well-loved memorial in honor of the Rosary, and according to a long-standing tradition, the entire month
of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary.
In the Rosary with its sequence of prayers and mysteries, we contemplate the Gospel in company with the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As Saint Pope John Paul II wrote in 2002, “the Rosary . . . is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the
Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this millennium, a prayer of great significance, destined to bring
forth a harvest of holiness . . .
With the Rosary, the Christian people sit at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to
experience the depths of his love.
Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer”

Praised be Jesus Christ!
This week we celebrate the feast day of one of our parish patrons: St. Francis of Assisi (October 4)—certainly one of the most beloved saints in the history of the Church.
Even though I attended a Franciscan college, and even spent an entire month living in Assisi while studying Italian during the summer of 2009, I never experienced any special devotion to this great medieval saint and I often felt like I was unable to understand why so many others were so attracted to his life and witness.
Several years ago, in my effort to learn more about his life, I picked up a then newly-published biography written by Fr. Augustine Thompson, OP called “Francis: A New Biography.”
Fr. Augustine Thompson is an historian by training, so he approaches this book with a fairly rigorous historical methodology—using only the most ancient and reliable accounts and testimonies about St. Francis’ life.
What emerges from his study is a surprising picture of a man who, at least in his early days, was completely pre-occupied with making sure that churches were kept clean and swept, and that anything to do with the worship of God at the altar (sacred vessels, altar linens, etc) were well-maintained and of highest quality.
See the following excerpt from the book which illustrates this point:
As the weather improved [in the spring of 1210], Francis himself became an ever more visible presence around Assisi. He wandered about the town and district, visiting shrines and churches. The squalor of some of these places, the result of meager resources or even total abandonment, offended both his religious and his aesthetic sensibilities. He began to carry a broom with him to sweep out the refuse. Unasked, he washed the dirty altar linen and decorated the altars. When people asked him about this (one can imagine the reactions of the resident priests), he linked penance for sin with care for sacred places. He wanted to ensure that the worship of God and the performance of the sacraments had only the finest equipment and preparation.
Above all else, why was it that St. Francis cared so much about the dignity of churches and sacred worship? Because he was absolutely in love with Jesus really present in the Blessed Sacrament.
Fr. Thompson explains:
“Francis returned often to the theme of the Eucharist in his writing, far more consistently than to that of poverty, which has attracted so much medieval and modern attention.”
St. Francis wrote two letters that were addressed specifically to clergy, and he emphasizes these same themes in dramatic fashion. In his own words he writes that he is outraged by the “great sin and ignorance some have toward the most holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and his most holy names and words that consecrate his Body.”
He instructs the priests saying:
Let all those who administer such most holy mysteries, especially those who administer them illicitly, consider how very dirty are the chalices, corporals, and altar linens, on which his Body and Blood are sacrificed. It is placed in many dirty places, carried about unbecomingly, and ministered to others without care.
I find it fascinating but appropriate that the one whom God used to “rebuild the Church” in the 13th century through his example of poverty and penance, was first and foremost a great lover of physical church buildings—which are places of worship and temples of Our Eucharistic Lord.
Perhaps we can honor this great saint by praying his own Prayer in Honor of Churches:
“We adore you, Lord Jesus Christ, and for all your churches, which are in the whole world. We also bless you, because
by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.”
