2018 NCEA Outline This is New Zealand’s national qualification. Subjects are divided into a number of Achievement Standards NCEA is offered at 3 levels: Year 11 – NCEA Level 1 Year 12 – NCEA Level 2 Year 13 – NCEA Level 3 and Level 4 Scholarship Further details are available by visiting www.ncea.govt.nz
Each subject is divided into a number of Standards worth varying number of credits. There are between 4 to 9 Standards in each subject. Each Standard is worth 3-8 credits. The total credits per subject is usually around 18 – 24
Year 11 – NCEA Level 1 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy, Mathematics, Science and English plus 3 further NCEA Level 1 Subjects Year 12 – NCEA Level 2 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy, English and either Statistics or Calculus plus 3 further NCEA Level 2 Subjects Year 13 – NCEA Level 3 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy plus 5 further NCEA Level 3 Subjects
Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L1 Maths to satisfy the numeracy requirement for Level 1 and University Entrance
Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L2 English (5 Reading/5 Writing) to satisfy the literacy requirement for University Entrance. This can also be gained through L2 Te Reo Maori.
Grading Level 1: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits including 10 in Maths
(numeracy) and 10 in English/Te Reo (Literacy) Level 2: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 1 and
at least 60 from Level 2 or above Level 3: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 2 and
at least 60 from Level 3 At each Level students require: 50 Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with Excellence 50 Merit or Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with Merit. University Entrance To gain University Entrance a student will need to achieve the following:
A full pass at NCEA Level 3
Three subjects – at Level 3 or above, made up of:
o 14 credits each, in three approved UE subjects
Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above from specific standards, made up of:
o 5 credits in reading
o 5 credits in writing
Numeracy -10 credits at Level 1 or above in Mathematics
For entry in 2018 the University of Auckland have their own literacy requirement. To enter a University course at Auckland, students need to have 17 credits at NCEA English Level Two or Three.

# Entry into some subjects without prerequisites is still possible with Head of Faculty approval
Passing NCEA Level 1 involves gaining a minimum of 80 credits. Across the 7 subjects in Year 11, St Peter’s offers students the chance to obtain about 130 credits. These are a mix of Internal Achievement Standards which are taken during school time and External Achievement Standards which are taken in the exam season at the end of the academic year. The object for every student should be to pass the standards at as high a level as possible, aiming for Merit and Excellence as their level of attainment.
Subjects outline specific course costs. NCEA itself costs approximately $80 for Level 1.

Head of Faculty Head of Faculty: Dr. Daniel Stollenwerk [email protected] Level One: Religious Education Course Description: At level 1, the Theology and Philosophy department offers 4 achievement standards, each worth 6 credits, each assessed internally. Having completed Church History in year 10, students begin with the Reformation studied in 3 parts: The Early Reformation, the English Reformation and the Catholic Counter Reformation. The class then focuses on the Trinity especially as articulated by the Nicene Creed of 325 AD. Next students look at all 4 Gospels and their place in the New Testament Canon, with special emphasis on the historical-critical method of interpretation. Finally, students focus on Just War Ethics within the larger context of the Consistent Ethic of Life. Credits: 24 Course costs: $10 Leads onto: Level 2 Religious Education

Course Description: The course is designed to introduce students to the wide ranges of places where they interact with the English language on a daily basis. Students will study a variety of texts, both written and visual, and will begin to understand how writers and directors use verbal and visual language for an intended purpose. This course will challenge students to reflect on how language is used to communicate ideas and will also cultivate their ability to communicate information in a developed manner. Students will encounter both fiction and non-fiction and will be required to communicate using a range of written forms, including essays, creative writing and a research report. Course Description: In Year 11 the focus is on integration of language skills. Students are exposed to a range of texts and develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Course Description: The Level 1 Drama course introduces students to all aspects of dramatic creation and performance. Students will study and perform a variety of dramatic texts, familiarising themselves with their features, techniques and form, as well as devising their own.

Course Description: This course consists of 6 Achievement Standards. These Achievement Standards cover the key basic mathematical concepts of Number, Algebra, Statistics & Probability.
The Level 1 Mathematics option includes an additional Algebra standard. Credits: The Level 1 Mathematics option has 22 credits. Course Description: Level 1 NCEA Science is a course which covers internally and externally assessed standards from the Science domain. 3 internally assessed standards and 4 externally assessed standards, make up this course. External standards are theory based. There is 1 each for Chemistry and Physics and 2 for Biology. The internal standards are investigations in Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy. Appropriate drawing techniques will be used to develop and clarify ideas for artworks in painting, printmaking and sculpture. Their work will be based on the study of a range of contemporary and traditional artist models within an over-all theme. All three internals are project based and the external is a two-board folio submission. Level One: Accounting Course Description: The course enables students to develop the knowledge and skills to manage the financial affairs of individuals, communities and small businesses. Students will cover the following Accounting practices: 1. Prepare and maintain financial records 2. Manage financial affairs 3. Act with integrity 4. Contribute to the wider community. No prior accounting knowledge is required to enter this course, although completion of Year 10 Business Studies will provide a good basis of knowledge for this course.

Level One: Economics Course Description: Students will study how producers and consumers interact through the market. The three major areas of study are: producers’ decisions, consumers’ decisions and the market. These areas will cover demand, supply, market equilibrium and market disequilibrium. Students will develop their learning through investigation, discussion, experimentation and the study of economic literature. No prior economic knowledge is required to enter this course, although completion of Year 10 Business Studies will provide a good basis of knowledge for this course. Level One: Business Studies Course Description: In this course students will explore the five key themes (business formation, functions of business, people in business, business management and the business environment) within the context of a small-to-medium business, of local or community significance (or focus) and connected to their life; for example, a local farm, tourist operator, retail outlet, franchise, or early childcare centre. Students will study the internal features of businesses, external factors that influence their success, operational business problems and provide causes, impacts, possible solutions and recommendations to address these. The marketing mix and the human resources process are also studied in this course. Students will gain knowledge of enterprising behaviour, innovation and entrepreneurship in business contexts. One of the internals will require students to form a small business and develop a business plan and product and sell it to students at a market day. No prior business studies knowledge is required to enter this course, although completion of Year 10 Business Studies will provide a good basis of knowledge for this course. Level One: History
Course Description: This course serves as a useful introduction to the demands of senior history for NCEA students. There is a strong emphasis on New Zealand history and how significant events have affected New Zealanders. The new Level 1 Standards allow for richer learning experiences of key events in history which lead towards a better understanding of New Zealand identity and how events have had an impact on our society. The internal Achievement Standards allow students to conduct their own research into events which impacted on New Zealand history and an investigation of different peoples’ perspectives in relation to an event. The external Achievement Standards focus on resource interpretation, extended writing and an investigation of a significant New Zealand event. Geography is the study of the environment as the home of people. It seeks to interpret the world and how it changes over time – past, present, and future. It explores the relationships and connections between people and both natural and cultural environments. Geography investigates the ways in which features are arranged on the earth’s surface. It describes and explains the patterns and processes that create them. Students learn to think spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies to obtain, present and analyse information. Topics studied include population, development and geographic skills. Course Description: This is a 1 year course designed to help students seek out opportunities to use Chinese confidently in familiar situations. By then end of this course students will be able to initiate and sustain a conversation with a sympathetic native speaker, speaking at some length if required. They can use basic language patterns spontaneously and show a willingness to experiment with new language and to read independently. They can write short passages and messages. They are aware of and are sensitive to the values held by Chinese people. The assessments for NCEA Level 1 consist of a writing portfolio, a presentation, a reading exam and a listening exam. In addition; students can do the speaking interaction portfolio at the DOC’s and HOF’s discretion. Course Description: This level study is designed to continue the work done with those students who have already studied Te Reo Māori in year 10. As an extension it is expected that the students have some prior knowledge of Te Reo Māori me Tikanga Māori. The focus of the course will be on achieving NCEA Level 1 internal standards – this will involve practicing with a range of familiar topics as determined by NCEA in 2013 The standards available are whakarongo I te reo o tōna ao and Kōrero I te reo o tōna ao, as well as the exam standards: Pānui I te reo o tōna ao and Tuhituhi I te reo o tōna ao. Entry Requirements: Year 10 Hard Materials Technology with an Achieved Grade or higher grade in all projects and a “Working at Curriculum Level 5 or higher”.
Course Description: This course is made up of practical and theory aspects of Furniture manufacture. The practical outcomes produced by the students mesh with the theory content of the course at all times. The student outcomes are constructed in such a way as to give them the maximum number of experiences of component manufacture and joining methods. Students produce their own working drawings of their article of furniture and work directly from them. Student centred learning techniques are used with Teacher consultation available at all times. Topics studied are: Safe Working, Making a cupboard, Joints and Workshop processes Credits: 25 (25 Internal) Course Costs: $130 Leads onto: Year 12 Hard Materials Level One: Design & Visual Communication (Previously known as Graphics and NOT to be confused with Visual Arts)
Entry Requirements: Year 10 Graphics with a minimum pass at Merit grade in at least Technical Drawing and an Achieved grade in Sketching
Course Description: This subject, previously known as Graphics and now called DVC, at Level One gives students the opportunity to build up sketching, drawing, rendering and computer skills so that they can visually explain their ideas for product and/or architecture design. At the end of the year students will submit a portfolio of selected work. By this time they will have the ability to:
Produce 2D and 3D freehand sketches that communicate design ideas
Produce instrumental drawings to communicate design ideas
Use rendering techniques to communicate the form of design ideas
Promote an organized body of design work using visual communication techniques Students will complete the above while producing the work for a given design brief. They will undertake development of design ideas through graphics practice. To present their work students will be introduced to Adobe Photoshop at all levels. The current briefs at Level One are scale architecture design (a shelter) and furniture design (seating). Students produce a study of an influential designer to inform their own design ideas considering shape, style, materials, function and aesthetics. Level One: Hospitality (Cookery)
Entry Requirements: A grade of working at level 5 in Year 10 Food Technology or by application to Mrs Homburg – HOF)
Course Description: This course is made up of practical and theory aspects of Commercial Cookery and Hospitality Operations. The courses is Unit Standards based and covers: Career Pathways in the Hospitality Industry, Preparing and presenting Meat in the Hospitality Industry, Preparing and presenting Egg and Cheese Dishes in the Hospitality Industry Preparing and presenting Fruit and Vegetable Dishes in the Hospitality Industry. Terminology used in the Hospitality Industry, Knife care, use, storage and carrying. The course is both theory and practical-based.
