Know- ing a project must be finished by a certain day means that one cannot ignore it in the time leading up to that deadline. Vigilance focuses our minds as well, but it can be difficult to sustain. If you don’t know the day or hour of the deadline, it is difficult to remain vigi- lant. However, Jesus will not come to us only at the end of time. Jesus will come to us at any hour and on any day. We just need to recognize him. He may come as a stranger in need or a friend in pain. He may come into our hearts at a significant time or when we least expect it. It may not seem glorious in the least, but Jesus comes in ways great and small every day. Jesus comes to us in this hour on this day in the Eu- charist. In the simple gifts of bread and wine, Jesus is present in a special way every time we celebrate mass. Let us receive him in the Eucharist, conscious of his presence within us, and within our neighbor, as we live this day made holy in his coming. Let us be vigilant in keeping watch for him. A Reflection From Father Joel

Dear Co-travelers, We are in our penultimate weekend of the Liturgical Calendar. Next Sunday the Church will celebrate the So-lemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe and ends the liturgical cycle this year and then be-gins anew with the First Sunday of Advent. This week though, our parish is blest to celebrate the feast day of one of our patrons, St. Albert the Great. He was born in Bavaria, Germany and studied in Padua, Italy before entering the religious order of the Domini-cans in 1222 or 1223. He was a man of wide interests and curiosity. He is revered as the patron saint of both philosophers and scientists and called “the Universal Doctor” because of the brilliance and scope of his learn-ing. He wrote much about Scripture, theology, and the natural sciences, but it is for philosophy-for shifting the emphasis from Augustine and Plato to Aristotle and for being the teacher of St. Thomas Aquinas that he is best remembered. He also had a great devotion to the Eucharist and wrote fervently of the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This extraordinary mix of scholarship and devotion is the gift of this steward saint which we celebrate in the opening prayer on his feast day: “God, our Father, you endowed St. Albert with the talent of combining human wisdom with divine faith. Keep us true to his teachings so that the advance of hu-man knowledge may deepen our knowledge and love of God.” We happily thank you, our dearest Patron Saint Albert, the Great, for your continuous though silent interces-sion for all the parishioners and residents in our community of Alameda. We humbly ask you to be on our side in raising our petitions to God for our sometimes indifference and deaf ears in not listening to the call of our Church due also to our other concerns. Please represent us before the holy throne of Jesus Christ our king and plead for our cause that when time comes for us to stand before Him, we may be found worthy to be wel-comed among the saints and his angels. Amen. My dear Co-travelers, let us not forget, we have St. Albert, the Great, on our side in this life and in the next to come. Have a blessed Sunday to all!!! Co-traveler, Fr. Joel, mf

THANKSGIVING MEALS for the

SICK and SHUT-IN Once again, the parish Outreach Ministry and St. Vincent de Paul Conference will be providing Thanksgiving Day meals to the sick and shut-in within Alameda. And, as in years past, we are reaching out to fellow parishioners for your finan-cial and volunteer support. We are also request-ing that you provide us with the names, ad-dresses and phone numbers of anyone in need of a Thanksgiving Day meal. This year, however, our meal preparation and de-livery will be done with Covid-19 guidelines provid-ed by the Diocese. All volunteers will be re-quired to complete a Covid-19 assessment questionnaire, provide proof of at least (2) vac-cinations, and be at least (18) years old. For that reason, we are asking all volunteers to register with us by Friday, November 12, 2021. If interested in volunteering to prepare or deliver meals please contact Donna Watson at (510) 769-6341 or by email at [email protected]. Monetary donations should be made out to SPN-SA Outreach Ministry and can be mailed or deliv-ered to the parish office along with any meal deliv-ery requests.
