Dear Parishioners, Today's first reading from the Book of Jonah does not tell the whole story. We heard that after God told Jonah to preach to the people of Nineveh, Jonah "made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the Lord's bidding." What we did not hear is that this was not the first time God told Jonah to preach in Nineveh. Jonah had refused the Lord's command the first time, but then had a change of heart. Written about 500 years before Christ, the Book of Jonah was written during the

time when Israel had been the victim of oppression by the nations of Babylon (present day Iraq), Persia (present day Iran), and Greece. Nineveh, the ancient capital of Assyria (part of present day Syria) represented the cruelty of those nations which ruled over Israel. If God had not cared about the people of Nineveh, He would not have sent Jonah to encourage them to change their ways in order to avoid destruction by God. When God saw that they had changed their ways, God decided to show mercy to the people of Nineveh. Not only is the mercy of God the point of the author of the Book of Jonah, the author teaches how great is God's mercy; that God's mercy reaches out to all, even to the people of Nineveh who repre-sented those who had oppressed God's people. Maybe Jesus had this story in mind when he said, "Love your enemies, pray for your persecutors. This will prove that you are children of your heavenly Father, for His sun rises on the bad and the good, He rains on the just and the unjust." (Matthew 5:45) God's mercy is for anyone who makes an effort to change his/her ways. As a parish family, let us rejoice with members of our family, the young people (listed below) of our parish who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Conlon on Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 a.m. May our young people follow the example of Jonah and other prophets and always be powerful witnesses to God’s Holy Spirit in their lives. May they and their families always treasure this day as an important part of their journey to God’s kingdom. In the Word,

Please mark your calendars for the following events in the Religious Education Program: • Wednesday, January 28: GIFT III Session & Confirmation Practice for Grade 8 students in the school and Religious Education Program. Students and their sponsors are asked to be in the gym by 6:00 p.m. and will be involved in Confirmation preparations and practice until 9:00 p.m.

• Saturday, January 31: Please pray for our parish eighth graders as they participate in the Confirmation Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop R. Daniel Conlon as the celebrant. A reception in the

gym will follow the liturgy, and Bishop Conlon will be available for pictures with the students and their families. There will be no religious education classes for Grades K-5 on this day.

It’s time again to celebrate Catholic Schools Week (January 26-31)! This year’s theme is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” To start our week off right, we will have an all-school Mass on Monday at 8:00 a.m. After Mass, we will host a Volunteer Breakfast at 8:45 a.m. in Room 1. All are welcome to the Mass and breakfast. On Tuesday, January 27, we will open our doors at 9:00 a.m. for our Open House and Curriculum Fair, which will run until 11:00 a.m. Whether you are a prospective or a

current family, all are welcome to come and tour the school, observe the classrooms, talk with teachers and parents, and visit the Curriculum Fair in the gym. No appointment is necessary—feel free to drop in! On Wednesday and Thursday, the students will hear a presentation from a Be Kind speaker and will get a chance to root for their favorite side during the traditional Grade 8 vs. Staff Volleyball Game. The St. Philip the Apostle Parent Association will provide treats for the students during the week and host a Family Fun Night on Thursday. We will end our week with the Sacrament of Confirmation for our eighth graders on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. We are proud to celebrate this sacrament with Bishop R. Daniel Conlon and congratulate all of our Confirmandi. If you are unable to make it to the Open House, please contact the school at 630-543-4130 to get more information or set up a personal tour of the school. You are also welcome to visit us at our website st-phil.org to peek into our school. Happy Catholic Schools Week!

THE 2015 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL "EXTENDING GOD'S MERCY" Bishop Conlon's mailing asking for a pledge to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) is in the hands of many of our parishioners. If you have received the mailing, please respond as soon as possible. If you have not received it, please contact our Parish Office at 630-628-0900 x103. The theme of this year’s Appeal is "Extending God's Mercy." Pope Francis recently said that mercy "goes beyond in such a way that sin is put to the side. It is like heaven. We look at the sky, there are many, many stars; but when the sun rises in the morning, the light is such that we can't see the stars. God's mercy is like that: a great light of love and tenderness." We are called by the Gospel to be a light unto others. By showing mercy to those in need, by helping build the kingdom of God in our own parish and our own diocese, we are like the morning light. Please shine bright by making a generous gift to the CMAA. The CMAA funds the mission and ministries of our diocese. It also funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish such as religious education, adult education, RCIA, and Catholic charities such as St. Vincent de Paul. Please answer the bishop's request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in ten installments. Thank you in advance for your support.

Baptism Information: Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sunday of each month. A pre-Baptism program must be attended by the parents. Please call the rectory to register for a program. Marriage Information: Please call the rectory to make arrangements at least six months in advance of the wedding date. Parish Registration: New families are welcome and are asked to register at the rectory. Also, previously registered parishioners are asked to notify us of any address changes. Emergency Sick Calls: Please notify us immediately of any serious illness in your family.

When someone yells “Stop!” we instantly freeze. When someone yells “Fore!” we instinctively duck. When someone yells “Fire!” we immediately run. All these exclamations carry a built-in urgency provoking an immediate and total response. When Jesus exclaims that this “is the time of fulfillment,” we must hear him with the same urgency and respond with the same immediacy. We are challenged to respond with a sense of urgency and immediacy to Jesus.

Do we have a sense of urgency about caring when we see someone in trouble; about loving when we notice someone excluded; about reconciling hurt; about eliminating, to the best of our ability, suffering is all its forms? Do we realize that every day is a “time of fulfillment,” that every day brings the “kingdom of God” at hand? In our faithful responding, we become one with Jesus in his saving mission. Nothing is more urgent than this. Source: 2015 Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

Milestones are used to mark

the distance traveled on a path, to signify the accomplishment made. When on a journey, one does not stop at the milestone—because it is not the destination. One may pause to consider the progress made and then move forward. On Saturday, January 31, many young people of the parish will come to a milestone in their faith journey when they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is the beginning of their life as fully-initiated members of the Church, but their faith journey is not over. It is beginning anew with the personal responsibility for growth in the knowledge of God. May God bless them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit that will be their strength to help them remain followers of Christ. These young adults, as we all do, need the encouragement that comes from prayer—not just as they receive this Sacrament, but also for their journey through life.

Our next PADS weekend is January 30/31, 2015. Start the new year by getting involved and offering support to

the homeless and less fortunate. We need help in all areas. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Nanette at 630-775-9399 or Aurelia at 630-773-2861.

Eighty percent of the population will need donated blood in their lifetime, yet only a small percentage of eligible donors in our area regularly give the gift of

life! Every time you donate blood, you can save up to three lives. A blood drive will be held on Saturday, January 31, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, 330 E. Fullerton in Addison. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact Judy Socha at 630-628-1959 or Sol Lombardo at 630-620-7828.

Knights are Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, who are committed to making their community a better place, while supporting their parish. Being a Knight is more than camaraderie:

it is being involved with your community and supporting St. Philip the Apostle Parish, while enhancing your own faith. It’s about protecting and enhancing your family life. The Knights of Columbus #650 would like you to be part of this fraternal membership. For more information,

please contact Jack Ochocinski at 630-620-1190 or e-mail [email protected].

“Pope Francis has seen a deeper link between the poor and the unborn. They are both among the first victims of a ‘throw-away society,’ an attitude that sees people

as disposable when they do not serve the selfish interests of those with more power.”
