22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Find the Missal (Ordinary of the Mass) at 150 in Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song

First Reading Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29

My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself

the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things

beyond your strength search not. The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the joy of the

wise. Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms atone for sins. Responsorial

Psalm Ps 68 R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.

Second Reading Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a

Brothers and sisters: You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy dark-

ness and storm and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message

be further addressed to them. No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly

Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God

the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect, and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprin-

kled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.

Gospel Lk 14:1, 7-14

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing

him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of

honor at the table. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of

honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you

may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to

take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to

you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at

the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your

brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.

Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be be-

cause of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Question of the Week!

Seeking humility (Luke 14:1, 7-14) – Buscando Humildad (Lucas 14:1, 7-14) Adults/Adultos: What concrete actions can you take in your community to help and improve the quality of life of the poor and homeless?

Children/ Niños: When you want only to own more things, how does that keep you from being generous to those in need?

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends,

We, as Christ’s Church, have a mission, entrusted to us by the Lord, to pass on the faith to future generations. YOU have a mission.

We need Catechists who are willing to carry out that mission and we are asking YOU. We need Catechists for Monday and Wednesday

evenings (English), Thursday evenings (Spanish) and for Sunday mornings (both languages). At the moment, we need a dozen or more

to teach all of the children who want to learn more about their faith.

You don’t have to wait for Jesus to call you to this ministry. He already has: “Go, and make disciples… teaching them to observe all

that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19) If you are new to this, the parish will give you all the materials you need, training, and

support. If you are still tentative about this ministry, see about beginning as an aide.

It is not enough to simply give information to these children. The faith must be passed on and for that it needs a person of faith. We

cannot give what we have not already received. Call Mary Kay Wallace (English) or Felicitas Palacios (Spanish) to learn more and to

offer to the Lord, in thanksgiving, what he has already given you. The number is 713-473-9484.

Several people have asked me about Genesis Calderon, the young lady who spoke to us about her mission in Ecuador, and about

Salvador Amezquita who crafted the beautiful votive candle stand for the church. If you would like to continue helping Genesis in her

work, the website is rostrodecristo.org/donate. If you would like to contact Salvador regarding some wrought-ironwork, his number is

832-818-1136.

God bless you.

Fr. Joe

Queridos amigos,

No

818-1136.

Dios les bendiga.

Reflection for Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time C

One of my new responsibilities as the Director of Parish Social Services here at St. Pius is to inform us on Catholic Social

Teaching and to help the community respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters. I will be writing a very small paragraph

in our bulletin on Catholic Social Teaching and our call to respond as it connects to the Gospel of the week.

Today we hear about the “place of honor” and about the person invited to sit in that place. It is the person that lets go of any-

thing that limits their relationship to the Host and to each other. Catholic Social Teaching states that in “teaching us charity,

the Gospel instructs us in the preferential respect due to the poor and the special situation they have in society: the more for-

tunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place their goods more generously at the service of others.” (A Call to

Action, #23).

A couple of reflection questions came to mind: do I want to build walls or do I want to live my life with the moto “In God

we Trust”? Can I stand in the presence of the Lord and say “Take what you have given me and give to those that have less

than I.” We are called not to give our surplus but to give what we have.

Call to Action/Llamada a acción, # 23).

mos.
