Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Summer 2017

Following from the last post on this space, by now we all reckon that, summer this year is going to be unique for a variety of reasons. As you read this, St. Pius V and Holy Rosary Catholic schools are a few days away from closing their doors for the last time as educational institutions after 95 and 59 years respectively. We thank God for the lives that have been positively impacted as well as of those whom God has used to make that happen.

It means then that, this summer is going to be a period of transition. Already, we know about the new Guardian Catholic School. The new school by all accounts ensures a catholic presence in this part of Jacksonville. But there is also another type of transition that is going to gradually unfold in the coming weeks and months. It is one that many have raised questions about long before now, when it became clear that, St. Pius V and Holy Rosary schools will be shouting down.

The question or questions concern primarily the buildings and facilities used by St. Pius V school. What is going to happen to them in the absence of kids taking lessons? Implied in that singular question are many others that parishioners, es-pecially of St. Pius have in mind. There is no need to repeat them here.

While those questions are in the minds of parishioners and may be also those in the community around us, there is one other question that not a few persons have entertained. Put simply, “Since the school is closing, is the parish or church also closing?” Brothers and sisters, St. Pius V Catholic Church is not going any-where. That message should go out loud and clear to all and sundry.

Remember those questions I alluded to earlier? They are relevant only because the parish is staying put. Let us be rest assured that, the facilities and campus will be put to good use for the parish and the community. Like the new school, the catholic presence here in service to God and the community will continue. The various forms that service will take and in what kind of facility are the subjects of deliberations at the moment.

With these in mind, there is one very important thing we all need to be doing. We need to pray for God’s wisdom to guide ongoing discussions and plans for the future. And by the same token, our sacrifices and contributions towards success-ful outcomes will also be required in the coming months.

Stay tuned!!!

Have a blessed week everyone!

Fr. Bernardine

DID YOU KNOW OUR FAITH? The Fruits of Holy Communion are numerous. A few are: Holy Communion separates us from sin, strengthens our intimate union with Christ Jesus, nourishes our spiritual life, preserves us from future mortal sin, commits us to the service of the poor. CCC# 1391-1397
