Dear friends,

This weekend is, of course, the 1-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. We give thanks to God for the

outpouring of generosity and self -sacrifice of all those who worked to alleviate the suffering of their brother

and sisters, especially our parishioners who gave of themselves during the months of our Harvey Food

Assistance Program to feed those who had been displaced. Many of our parishioners and neighbors have still

not fully recovered from the effects of the storm. Please pray that God continue to sustain them with hope

and the support of the community.

Our own parish struggle for recovery is nearly at an end. Two weeks ago, we completed that last of the

structural repairs and reopened the cafeteria. Work on restoring the organ continues with the help of a

generous grant from the parishioners of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. We expect to have the organ back to

its original condition within a month or two. We would like to have a mass of rededication, so come join the

choir so that on that day we can match this beautiful instrument with our own voices in giving glory to God.

I ask you to be considerate of our brothers and sisters who are not as mobile as they would like to be. ALL

of the parking spaces next to the church on the Harris Street side (near the portico) are reserved for

Handicapped Parking. If you do not have a handicapped placard or a license plate, please do not park in

those spaces. At one of our masses a couple of weeks ago, every single space was taken by cars without

placards. Our brothers and sisters need these spaces so that they can come to Mass. Please do not prevent

them. If you yourself need to park in those spaces, please obtain a placard. The fine for parking in a

handicapped spot without a placard is significant and we will begin asking Pasadena Police to ticket cars

which are illegally parked.

Our 2nd Collection today is in support of the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) which supports the operations

of so many ministries in the Archdiocese. Please be generous in your support and consider, even now,

making a pledge. In a few weeks we will begin our participation in the Archdiocesan Capital Campaign, Ignite:

Our Faith, Our Mission. We need your support for both DSF and Ignite. While DSF looks to day -to-day

expenses, Ignite looks to the long -term. For example, the work of our Vocations Office in calling young men

to priesthood is supported by DSF; the renovation of St. Mary's Seminary where they will be prepared for

priesthood is supported by Ignite. DSF supports the fund which helps parishes in need in the ordinary course

of events; Ignite supports the Disaster Fund which helps parishes in need as the result of catastrophic events.

(St. Pius V has received significant help from both funds.)

We return next week to our normal schedule of Masses. Saturday evening masses will be in English at 5:30PM

and in Spanish at 7:00PM. I will be in Alaska to celebrate the wedding of my niece the weekend of September

8-9 and we will have visiting priests for all the masses. There will also be some changes in the daily mass

schedule so please check the bulletin next Sunday.

As we begin a new school year and our children re -commit themselves to study and advancing in wisdom,

knowledge, and grace, let all of us do the same. May this year be a year of growth in our faith and in our

faithfulness. May it be a year of favor from the Lord for St. Pius V.

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joe

Queridos amigos,

Muchos de nuestros feligreses y vecinos at:in no se

a Dios.

P. Joe

Living Our Faith.... Parish Social Ministry We continue with the fifth characteristic of an Everyday Steward... This week we cover the fifth characteristic which is committed. So far, we stated that an “Everyday Steward” is a person that is mindful, prayerful, grateful, and gracious. We are called to think of God and neighbor be-fore we take care of our needs. Our road is hard. In Mathew 16 we are told to pick up our cross and follow and in Mathew 19 we are also told to sell all we have, to give freely to the poor, and follow him. No one can live this way without commitment. We are either in or out. Dynamic Catholics for this Week: Aug. 27 – St. Monica, Memorial: Saint Monica, also known as Monica of Hippo, is St. Augustine of Hippo's mother. She was born in 331 A.D. in Tagaste, which is present-day Algeria. When she was very young, she was married off to the Roman pagan Patricius, who shared his mother's violent temper. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. Three children were born to Monica and Patricius: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Unfortunately, Monica was unable to baptize her children and when Augustine fell ill, Monica pleaded with Patricius to allow their son to be baptized. Patricius allowed it, but when Augustine was healthy again, he withrew his permission. For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother-in-law, until finally, one year before Patricius' death, she successfully converted them. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately Augustine became lazy and uncouth. This greatly worried Monica, so when Patricius died, she sent the 17-year-old Augustine to Carthage for schooling.

Aug. 28 – St. Augustine of Hippo, Memorial: He was the son of St. Monica and Patricius. He was a Roman African, early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patris-tic Era. Among his most important works are The City of God, On Christian Doctrine and Confessions.

Aug. 29 – Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist – Memorial: The day commemorates the martyrdom by beheading of Saint John the Baptist on the orders of Herod Antipas through the vengeful request of his step-daughter Salome and her mother. None of the sources gives an exact date, which was probably in the years 28-29 AD (Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-27; Luke 9:9) after imprisoning John the Baptist in 27 AD (Matthew 4:12; Mark 1:14) at the behest of Herodias his brother's wife whom he took as his mistress. (Matthew 14:3-5; Mark 6:17-20);[3] According to Josephus, the

death took place at the fortress of Machaerus. Opportunities to become a Dynamic Catholic.... Call the main phone and leave a message for the person in charge of that ministry at (713) 473-9484. Viviendo nuestra fe...

Many times, we overlook how important our faith family is in God’s work. Sometimes the simplest things bring us together. Just as Jesus gave us food and brought people together over “bread”, we also come together around the table of the Eucharist. We gather at other times to pray or conduct a meet-ing and many times we have food at those gatherings. How many times have you gone to our Festival or a meeting and had something delicious and wished you had the recipe. Beginning Friday, September 7, we will begin: FOODIE FRIDAYS: Nourishment for the Body and Soul on our Facebook page. We will post a parishioner’s recipe with a spiritual quote, scrip-ture or prayer. WE NEED YOUR RECIPES THAT EVERYONE ALWAYS ASKS YOU TO SHARE! Some of you might have special prayers, scripture passages or inspiration quotes that you would like to share. You can email me your recipe or prayers at [email protected] or drop off a copy for Connie Wilson at the office.

¡RECETAS NECESARIAS! ¿Cuántas veces has ido a nuestro Festival o una reunión y has probado algo delicioso y deseó haber tenido la receta?

RECIPES NEEDED! I always get what I think are my best ideas while I’m in the shower. The only problem is I can’t write them down! Last week while standing in the shower, I began re-flecting on the Bread of Life Dialogues that we have heard in the scriptures for the last few weeks. I thought about how many ways we are nourished by God.

We are still looking for additional money counters. If you are interested & available to help on Sunday mornings Eng and afternoons Spanish for a couple of hours once every five weeks or so, please call the office and let us know we will put you in touch with the person in charge. You could also sign up as a sub to fill in when someone is not

available. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Last week we heard in Ephesians:

Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Singing at mass is one way we fulfill this scripture in our lives today! We invite you to join one of our choirs at St. Pius. THE SPIRIT WILL HELP GUIDE YOU! Contact our Director of Music, Connie Wilson at [email protected] or call 713-473-9484 ext. 220.

English Choir Rehearsals will begin again weekly starting September 5, 6:30-8:30 pm. Room 17.

Organ Update: The organ repairs are almost completed!

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Find the Missal (Ordinary of the Mass) at 150 in Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song

First Reading JOS 24:1-2A, 15-17, 18B Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders, their judges, and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people: "If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." But the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."

Responsorial Psalm PS 34 R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Second Reading EPH 5:2A, 25-32 Brothers and sisters: Live in love, as Christ loved us. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

Gospel JN 6:60-69 Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."
