Dear Brothers and Sisters, New Commandment of Love The word ‘love’ appears several hundred times in the Bible, and it is no surprise that, the risen Lord redefines what true and authentic love is by His suffering and death on the cross. “One can have no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” Jesus elevated love essentially to the status of a commandment. The Catechism explains further:

“The Lord, having loved those who were his own, loved them to the end. Know-ing that the hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father, in the course of a meal he washed their feet and gave them the commandment of love. In order to leave them a pledge of this love, in order never to depart from his own and to make them sharers in his Passover, he instituted the Eucharist as the me-morial of his death and Resurrection, and commanded his apostles to celebrate it until his return; ‘thereby he constituted them priests of the New Testament. (CCC, 1337)

“Jesus makes charity the new commandment. By loving his own ‘to the end,’ he makes manifest the Father’s love which he receives. By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love of Jesus which they themselves receive. Whence Jesus says: ‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love.’ And again: ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.’ (CCC, 1823)

“The Law of the Gospel requires us to make the decisive choice between ‘the two ways’ and to put into practice the words of the Lord. It is summed up in the Golden Rule, ‘Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; this is the law and the prophets.’ The entire Law of the Gospel is contained in the ‘new

commandment’ of Jesus, to love one another as he has loved us. (CCC, 1970)

“In response to the question about the first of the commandments, Jesus says: ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’ The apostle St. Paul reminds us of this: ‘He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You

shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.’” (CCC, 2196) May we strive each day to love others as God continues to love us!

Have a blessed week everyone! Fr. Bernardine

DID YOU KNOW OUR FAITH? The Sacrament of Reconciliation has many names: it is called the sacrament of conversion as it changes the hearts of those who receive it to return to the Father after sinning, it is called the sacrament of penance as it

outlines some paths for which the sinner can be reunited, it is called the sacrament of confession wherein the penitent honestly examines their life, it is called the sacrament of forgiveness in that God (acting through the priest) offers pardon and peace and finally, it is the sacrament of Reconciliation as it imparts to the sinner the love and care of God, the one who reconciles all. (CCC# 1423-1442)

THANK YOU Thank you to Deidre Clayton, Tinye Dawkins and Lucille Trotter members of the St. Bernadette Council, for providing the floral arrangements on the Altar for

STEWARDSHIP AWARENESS SUNDAY I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved

you, so you also should love one another." (John 13:34)

It is easy to love someone when they love you back. But it takes strength and courage to love someone when we feel unappreciated, used or feel our opinion doesn’t matter. It takes courage to “love my neighbor” when he may be someone I don’t like, someone I don’t know or someone that doesn’t look like me.

WORD OF LIFE “Patients need to be able to trust their doctors to always care for their lives and never deliberately cause death… Patients facing seri-ous illness may feel hopeless and depressed, as though their lives have lost meaning. Addressing psychological, emotional, and spiri-tual problems is essential to palliative care. Assisted suicide allevi-ates none of these problems, but gives in to them.”
