Dear Sisters and Brothers, Formula for Eternal Life Could any question be more important than the one put before Jesus in today’s gospel? While it was a ploy to cause some controversy, we have to acknowledge that, the question itself was presented, eliciting a very practical response from Jesus. And it is a response that continues to challenge all of humanity – love your neighbor as yourself in words and actions.

Once again we turn to the Catechism:

“In response to the question about the first of the commandments, Jesus says: ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” The second is this, ‘”You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’ “The apostle St. Paul reminds us of this: ‘He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill,

You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.’ (CCC, 2196)

“Jesus summed up man’s duties toward God in this saying: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This immediately echoes the solemn call: ‘Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD.’ God has loved us first. The love of the One God is recalled in the first of the ‘ten words.’ The commandments then make explicit the re-sponse of love that man is called to give to his God. (CCC, 2083)

“Christ died out of love for us, while we were still ‘enemies.’ The Lord asks us to love as he does, even our enemies, to make ourselves the neighbor of those far-thest away, and to love children and the poor as Christ himself. The Apostle Paul has given an incomparable depiction of charity: ‘charity is patient and kind, char-ity is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Charity does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but re-joices in the right. Charity bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.’” (CCC, 1825)

In placing the Samaritan, a despised person, at the center of this story of love in action, Jesus makes it clear how important it is for our eternal goal to be loving to everyone. Have a blessed week everyone!

STEWARDSHIP AWARENESS SUNDAY “Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’” (Luke 10:37)

This was Jesus’ command at the end of the Good Samaritan story. Did you know that the Samaritans and Jews despised each other. The moral of the story is to love our neighbor. That means loving someone you may not know or someone that looks different than you or someone that you don’t like. All without expecting anything in return.

WORD OF LIFE “To understand more fully how to defend and protect human life, we must first consider who we are, at the deepest level. God creates us in his image and likeness, which means we are made to be in loving relationship with him. The essence of our identity and worth, the source of our dignity, is that we are loved by God.”

USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “How to Build a Culture of Life”

DID YOU KNOW OUR FAITH? The Decalogue must be understood in the context of the great liberating act of God, the Exodus. The gift of the Ten Commandments and of the Law is part of the Covenant that God sealed with his people. This gift is the revelation of God himself and his holy will. In making his will known, God reveals himself to his people. (CCC# 2058-2060)
