Parish Social Ministry Update

We believe the Church’s social mission is an essential measure of every parish community…We need to build local

communities of faith where our social teaching is central, not fringe; where social ministry is integral, not optional; where

it is the work of every believer, not just the mission of a few committed people and committees. (Communities of Salt and

Light, 6-7)

Thank you~The Office of Parish Social Ministry is extremely grateful to our parish and volunteers for your wonderful support. During

the month of January, 503 Individuals (166 Households) received food benefits from the food pantry. In addition, several families

avoided eviction and utility bills were paid in January. Every time you give to the PSM second collection, God provides for an

individual / family in need. Thank you!

The Pantry is in need of the following items: Tuna Fish...Canned Fruit/Mixed...Canned Vegetables/Mixed...Peanut Butter/Jelly

Toiletry Items (soap, tooth brushes, tooth paste, deodorant (men and women), unused combs and brushes, new hand towels)

New Core Member Training

If you’d like to make a difference in someone’s life, then consider the Parish Social Ministry “Food Pantry Team.” Join us for a training

on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the PLC Conference Room. You’ll have an opportunity to learn about the work of

ministering to the poor & needy, and new programming coming to St. Pius V like ESL. Please RSVP by calling the PSM Office at (713)

473-9484 ext. 316, or email [email protected] before Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

Dear friends and parishioners,

The forty days of Lent can seem like a long time. It’s helpful to have a friend to keep us going. He or she can encourage us, challenge us, and pick us up if we falter. And if that friend happens to be our spouse, so much the better! This year, consider approaching Lent as a team. Set aside a time for prayer each day and invite your spouse to do the same. It can be the same time, or different times depending on your schedules. If you’re parents, take turns looking after the kids so that each of you can have quiet time. If you’d like to try to pray together but need help to get started, try: How to Pray with Your Spouse: Four Simple Steps (www.foryourmarriage.org/how-to-pray-with-your-spouse-four-simple-steps/) or Who Me, Pray? . . .With Her? (www.foryourmarriage.org/who-me-pray-with-her/).

Last Sunday, at the 10:00 and 12:00 Masses, we blessed and installed our new Parish Councils: Pastoral Council: Arturo Gonzalez, Jerry Pena, Bob Wood, Beatriz Amezquita, Martin Rodriguez, Francisca Santos, Jesus Valdez, Grabiel Gonzales, Salvador Juarez, Rosalba Lopez; Finance Council: Manuel Aguilar, Patrick Nguyen, Rodolfo Deleon, Libby Francisco, Wally Honeywell, Guadalupe Jimenez, Irma Morales; School Board: Terry Garza, Michael Arevalo, Natalie Childress, Marie Elizondo, Paul Malague, Ana Aguilar, Cecelia Pena, Ted Grant.

This week we completed the purchase of the property at 805 Shaver, formerly “Battery Express”. There is still some work to be done before we can make use of that property, but I hope that will be done soon.

Finally, please visit our new website and make suggestions as to how we can further improve it. If you are a member of a parish ministry or group, please request a page to keep us all up-to-date on your activities. You can send suggestions, comments, requests, etc. from the “Contact” option under the “About Us” tab.

May Lent be a time of blessing for you,

Fr. Joe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Queridos amigos y parroquinaos,

2nd Sunday of Lent

Evangelio Mc 9, 2-10 En aquel tiempo, Jesús tomó aparte a Pedro, a Santiago y a

First Reading Gn 22:1-2, 9A, 10-13, 15-18 God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.”

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.”

As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.

Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing—all this because you obeyed my command.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 116 (OC#832) R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

Second Reading Rom 8:31B-34 Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us?

He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was raised—who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Gospel Mk 9:2-10 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high

mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.

Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terri-fied. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

2nd Sunday of Lent

Notes from the music office: Special thanks to the Pasa Divas who provided music last Sunday for our 8am service… Awesome singing and wonderful

ladies!!

Blessings to the members of the ‘Funeral Choir’ who most recently helped celebrate the life of Frank Konieczny…your

voices joined with past St. Pius V angels and saints to fill the church with faith. God bless you all. Two more hymnals in his

memory are ordered.

Congratulations to the young singers who are part of the Cardinal Circle Choir—preparing to sing at mass in April for

those who donate $5000 (or more) annually to the 13 inner city schools in our ArchDiocese. Double blessings to those who

are also ringing handbells!

My thanks to the ‘team’ from the Grupo de Oracion which sponsored the amazing “Ce’la” concert! Check out her

Facebook page to see selfies of those who waited till after 10pm to get a photo… We raised over $3,000 for the parish.

Next Lenten concert: Monday March 16 with Phyllis & guests. Call Phyllis 281-660-7011 if you’d like to join us…

AND AND AND AND AND AND AND AND AND AND

Pasadena Little Theatre is presenting “Sound of Music” this May 1-May 17. Auditions are Sunday March 1 and Monday

March 2 (6-8:30pm) at the Theatre. 30 seconds of singing, a few minutes of script reading, and maybe a little dancing. (Yes,

there will be a field trip fundraiser from St. Pius V!! and I need singing kids and nuns….)

Expressing our faith through music – it’s what we’re called to do.

May you all be twice blessed. — Phyllis

Notice Regarding Important Virtus Updates: The timeframe for taking Keeping the Promise Alive refresher has changed. In the past everyone was allowed a full calendar year to

attend in order to remain in compliance. With the changes made recently, the timeframe is now based on anniversary date not calendar

year. For example, if someone took the PGC class on July 8, 2009 they would have had until December 31, 2014 to complete the KPA

class, however, with the new changes in the VIRTUS system they now have until July 8, 2015 to attend. This applies to both, volunteers

and employees, parish and school.

Reminder

Make sure your ID is not expired. If it is, you will not be allowed to stay and attend a session.

Many of you have asked what training will come after KPA. At this time there is nothing in place. For the few who attended in August

2011, they will not be due until after August 2016. We will keep you informed.

God Bless America
