Early abuse identification is key

We can do our best to ensure that the children in our community are as safe as possible, and one critical way is to take immediate action at the first hint of improper behavior by an adult towards a child. Be familiar with ways in which perpetrators attempt to groom children, their parents, and church communities so that you can recognize and interrupt such behaviors promptly. Paying attention to changes in behavior, appetite, or demeanor in the children we know is also important as these cues may be reflective of a child’s distress.

In times of crisis, God always surprises the Church with unlikely saints, through whom Christ’s light radiates beyond their local communities to illumine the universal Church. Charles Borromeo was such a saint: appointed Archbishop of Milan at twenty-one by his papal uncle, epitomizing the corruption that

the reformers condemned, Charles instead inspired a revival that reinvigorated a Church devastated by the Reformation. His less well-known contemporary, Turibius of Mongrovejo, was God’s “saintly surprise” in the New World. Spanish-born lawyer, professor, head of the feared Inquisition, Turibius was still a layman when a grateful king appointed him Archbishop of far-off Lima. Once in Peru, however, Turibius was appalled at the abuse of indigenous peoples by the occupying conquistadores—his fellow countrymen—and by the complicity of the clergy. He became the natives’ devoted advocate, building churches, schools, hospitals, and the first seminary in the Americas, publishing catechisms and prayerbooks in the native languages he painstakingly mastered. Four hundred years later, whenever Pope Benedict welcomed Latin American bishops to Rome, he always invoked “the shining example of San Toribio.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ARCHDIOCESE ANNOUNCES

SUSPENSION OF MASSES AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC

March 16, 2020

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced this afternoon the suspension of Masses amid the current health threat due to COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). “I deeply regret that we are forced to temporarily suspend public celebration of the Mass in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez. “What we do in the Church, we do out of love for God and love for our brothers and sisters. We are taking this extraordinary step today out of love and concern for those in our families and communities who are most vulnerable to this deadly coronavirus.” Archbishop Gomez stressed that the decision was “not made lightly,” and that it was made after “much prayer and reflection” and in consultation with the Archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops, Council of Priests, lay advisors, and government and public health officials. “I ask your continued prayers for all those who are afflicted with this virus and those who are afraid and vulnerable. I also ask you to pray and reach out to help the many families who are facing difficulties as a result of this emergency. We also need to keep in our prayers all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and public health and civil authorities working to contain the outbreak of this virus and treat those who are sick,” stated the Archbishop. Catholics are encouraged to continue to pray at home with their families and join to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion. They are also encouraged to participate in the Holy Mass via the Internet. The Archdiocese will provide a livestream of non-public Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels daily and on Sunday via Facebook, @lacatholics, (facebook.com/lacatholics/) or visit lacatholics.org/emergency/. The daily Mass (Mon-Fri) in English at 12:10 p.m. and the Sunday Masses in English at 10 a.m. and in Spanish at 12:30 p.m. will be livestreamed.

Thank you for your generous service in our Archdiocese. All priests, employees and volunteers are required to complete re-certification training in a Safe Environment program every four years. Please drop off a copy of your current certificate to the Office; if your certificate had expired, it is your obligation to find the soonest scheduled class to take it and comply with this utmost urgent matter. We are under very strict scrutiny to comply with the archdiocesan policies adopted under the Charter for the Protection of Minors established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its annual compliance audit.

Classes are offered continually at various parishes on a rotating basis

(visit www.virtusonline.org).

Fr.
