St. Pius X Catholic School News April 2018
Dear St. Pius X School Community April is now upon us and spring
like conditions are beginning to surface. With the awakened
enthusiasm and resurgence of energy that the onset of Spring
typically brings, we look forward to meeting the old and new
challenges that await us during the final term of the school year.
It is my sincere wish that the hope generated by the Resurrection
of our Lord and the spring season, brings everyone in the St. Pius
X Catholic School community a renewal of the Spirt for the
remainder of the year. On behalf of the staff at St. Pius X
Catholic School, we extend our best wishes and hope your Easter is
decorated with love, peace, joys of Spring and the season’s
blessings.

St. Pius X Student News Earth Hour Challenge On Friday, March 23rd,
our school was amongst other schools that participated in the Earth
Hour Challenge. St. Pius X did a super job turning off the lights
between 10:00am and 11:00am to promote awareness of the EARTH HOUR
event globally. It is important to remember that Earth Hour is more
than just switching off the lights. It's a commitment to unite and
protect our planet Earth and drive real positive change to create a
better future for our planet. S. Fillier
Congratulations to the ice hockey team for a successful season. The
team participated in two tournaments at Canlan Ice Sports at York
University and showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. A
special thank you to those parents who assisted on the bench and
provided transportation. J. Borg
Lacrosse On Friday, March 2 we welcomed Kevin Taylor from Mimico
Mountaineers Lacrosse to our primary classes. Kevin gave the
students an introduction to Canada's National Sport and taught them
some basics. They had a wonderful time, thank you Coach Kevin! G.

Family Fitness Night St. Pius X held it's second Family Fitness
Night on March 7. It was a fantastic event with many activities
including curling, hockey, zumba, skipping, volleyball, pilates and
non-contact boxing. We had a great turnout; thank you to all the
families who joined in the fun! Special thanks to our pilates
teacher Georgina O'Grady and our non-contact boxing teacher
Catherine Samuel for donating their time to our event, and to our
wonderful Grade 7s and 8s who were the leaders of all the stations
and teams. G. Agres
Junior Girls Volleyball Our Junior Girls Volleyball team played in
an exhibition tournament at Our Lady of Victory School on Friday
March 23. They played with heart and determination, finishing third
out of six teams and gaining a lot of experience. We're looking
forward to our upcoming exhibition games against St. Francis of
Assisi and All Saints, and our divisional tournament on April 11.
G. Agres Girls Fitspirit Club Many of our grade 7 and 8 girls have
been hard at work two lunches per week for the last month... They
are part of our new club at St. Pius X ~ the Fitspirit Club! The
girls participate in running and strength training activities in
preparation for the culminating event; a 5km or 10km run and
celebration at Downsview Park with thousands of other Fitspirit
members from across Toronto! The girls also had a training and
zumba session with a Fitspirit Ambassador in late March. Keep up
the great work Fitspirit team! G. Agres
Ms. Barbosa and Mrs. Karvonen's classes participated in the
Lifesaving Society's Swim to Survive program this month. The
students learned 3 essential skills needed to survive an unexpected
fall into deep water: roll into deep water, tread for 1 minute and
swim 50 meters. The students also enjoyed some free play at the end
of their lessons.
On Thursday March 22, 2018 the Kindergarten students participated
in a presentation on mammals in our school library. The students
learned about the characteristics of a mammal. They also had the
opportunity to see and feel various animal furs such as, bear,
coyote and an arctic fox. Thank you to our presenter Mr. Chapel for
providing us with this engaging learning opportunity. FDK

A special thank you to Emily and Sienna for dancing us into the
March break with some Irish dancing. Emily and Sienna did an
excellent job presenting an Irish dance called The Two Handed Reel
to a few classes. The students were delighted to see such wonderful
team work! A. Miaco
During Holy Week, the students in Ms. Miaco’s class dyed hard
boiled eggs. The eggs turned out beautifully with vibrant colours.
The students took their eggs home with the baskets they decorated.
Thank you to the parent volunteers for helping us out! The students
had an EGGcellent time! Happy Easter everyone! A. Miaco
During Lent, it is a tradition to pray the Stations of the Cross.
Christians have done this for hundreds of years. It is a way of
remembering Jesus’ journey from the palace of the governor, Pontius
Pilate, to the hill called Calvary where he was nailed to the cross
and died. On Holy Thursday, the students in Ms. Oliveira’s Grade 5
class led the school in this important ritual of prayer and
meditation. The way Jesus lived shows us how to live. The way Jesus
treated people shows us
how to treat others. The way Jesus died shows us how much Jesus
loves us. L. Oliveira
On Monday, March 26th, the Grade 3 students in Ms. Careri, Mrs.
Stanevicius, Ms. Barbosa, and Mrs. Miaco’s classes enjoyed an
engaging Scientists in School workshop entitled, “Soil: It’s Too
Important to be Treated Like Dirt!” The students all participated
in handson activities geared towards enhancing and enriching the
overall and specific expectations outlined in the Ontario Science
and Technology Curriculum for the Grade 3 Earth and Space Systems
strand. They explored the effects of water on soil and how soil
provides conditions to support plant growth. The students learned
about the different living
organisms in the soil and the importance of earthworms. They
particularly enjoyed holding an earthworm! They discovered that
there are different layers found in the soil and created their own
soil profile to take home. Everyone enjoyed the workshop and
solidified their understanding of Soil, one of our most precious,
natural resources! A big thank you goes out to all the parents who
helped to facilitate the activities. G. Careri, M. Barbosa, M.
Miaco, R. Stanevicius
Miss Atkinson’s Grade 8 class participated in a ‘Groundwater
Investigations’ Scientist in the School program early in March.
Since groundwater is an important source of fresh drinkable water,
the more we understand it, the better we can help protect this
invaluable resource. Students worked through a series of hands-on
labs to understand just how important it is. A great learning
experience was had by all and an excellent complement for their
unit of work on ‘Water Systems’. Special thanks to the Parent
Council for funding such a program! M. Atkinson

close to
every man, to begin with the one who is poor, the one who suffers
