CAPITAL CAMPAIGN NEWS DECEMBER UPDATE

PLEDGE TOTAL TO DATE ............................... $ 2,920,213CASH RECEIVED TOTAL TO DATE .............. $ 1,663,754NEW PLEDGE TOTALS RECEIVED THIS MONTH ................................................. $ 12,667CASH RECEIVED TOTAL THIS MONTH NOVEMBER ......................... $ 105,020

The December 18th move from the storage container at the back of the lot into the New Build of Hohman Hall was a great success. We had 20 eighth graders and over 25 adult volunteers. All items were moved into the new build and the items going into storage in the lower level were left in the storage container waiting on the completion of fencing into the lower level. This would separate storage areas by ministry. Thank you to all who participated.

The build continues with the new bride’s room, workshop meeting rooms and industrial kitchen with a large partial basement. The FRIGID temperatures have slowed the progress, but the footers are to be completed and then the block will be installed as soon as temperatures warm a bit.

Please remember, we are still in need of new Campaign pledges to continue our efforts. Please use your green Campaign envelopes or pick up a pledge envelope in the vestibule of the church. Msgr. Funk, the Capital Campaign Team, and all the staff here at St. Pius X Church & School want to thank all of you for your continued support and prayers for OUR Capital Campaign.

JOSEPH’S COAT COOKIE SALE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! A huge thank-you to the many, many bakers, packers and sellers for the 2017 St. Pius X Cookie Sale. It was a huge success! Initial counts indicate that $3,822.00 was raised by SPX parishioners. Messiah and Parkview Presbyterian, our partners at Joseph’s Coat, raised $1,998.00, which brings us to over $5,820.00 raised for Joseph’s Coat. This will be used to help provide warm clothing and shoes for the winter. It also will be used to buy heavy duty shelving for our warehouse to store clothing and other items for upcoming seasons. We thank all our parishioners for their tremendous support of the Cookie Sale! Please mark your calendars. Our 2018 cookie sale will be the weekend of December 15 and 16!

VIDEO OF THE MONTH: Inspired by the diligence of professional athletes and St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, Fr. Mike Schmitz encourages us to approach our prayer life – and life in general – with a goal and sense of

purpose. Getting physically in shape requires more than just a casual workout, and getting spiritually in shape requires more than going through the motions of our religion. Visit spxreynoldsburg.com/education/adult-faith-formation.html (or, from the parish home page, spxreynoldsburg.com, click “Education” then “Adult Faith Formation”).

HOW ABOUT A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO FIRM UP YOUR FAITH? Formed.org is a website that can best be described as “Netflix for Catholics.” It provides a comprehensive offering of high quality movies, short videos, audio books, and seminars from well-known Catholic teachers and presenters who will help you grow and develop your faith. Formed is available via your computer, tablet, or mobile phone, so you can watch and listen no matter where you are – any time, any place – the Catholic faith on demand. There is a free 7-day trial and if you continue, the cost is $9.99 per month, which is less than many gym memberships. Check out the preview video on the Adult Faith Formation web page on the parish website. There’s something for everyone. Give it a try!

DID YOU KNOW that St. Pius has Endowment Funds managed and stewarded according to Catholic teachings at The Catholic Foundation? These funds are not only set up to benefit the longevity of the parish but to express your gratitude to God for a lifetime of blessings. A planned gift during your life, or a bequest in your will, directs valuable funds to the ministries of our parish. To find out how these funds benefit the St. Pius parish community, contact David Clark at 614-443-8893 or email [email protected].“While we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people- but especially to those of the household of faith.”

(Galatians 6:10).

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR JANUARY 17

Saint Anthony of Egypt (Saint Anthony the Abbot) (251-356)

Saint Anthony of Egypt’s Story: The life of Anthony will remind many people of St. Francis of Assisi. At 20, Anthony was so moved by the Gospel message, “Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor” (Mark 10:21b), that he actually did just that with his large inheritance. He is different from Francis in that most of Anthony’s life was spent in solitude. He saw the world completely covered with snares, and gave the Church and the world the witness of solitary asceticism, great personal mortification and prayer. But no saint is antisocial, and Anthony drew many people to himself for spiritual healing and guidance.

At 54, he responded to many requests and founded a sort of monastery of scattered cells. Again like Francis, he had great fear of “stately buildings and well-laden tables.”

At 60, he hoped to be a martyr in the renewed Roman persecution of 311, fearlessly exposing himself to danger while giving moral and material support to those in prison. At 88, he was fighting the Arian heresy, that massive trauma from which it took the Church centuries to recover. “The mule kicking over the altar” denied the divinity of Christ.

Anthony is associated in art with a T-shaped cross, a pig and a book. The pig and the cross are symbols of his valiant warfare with the devil – the cross his constant means of power over evil spirits, the pig a symbol of the devil himself. The book recalls his preference for “the book of nature” over the printed word. Anthony died in solitude at age 105.

In an age that smiles at the notion of devils and angels, a person known for having power over evil spirits must at least make us pause. And in a day when people speak of life as a “rat race,” one who devotes a whole life to solitude and prayer points to an essential of the Christian life in all ages. Anthony’s hermit life reminds us of the absoluteness of our break with sin and the totality of our commitment to Christ. Even in God’s good world, there is another world whose false values constantly tempt us.

Saint Anthony of Egypt is the Patron Saint of: Butchers, Gravediggers, Skin Diseases
