SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST JUNE 24, 2018

FESTIVAL NEWS It is a very exciting time for St. Pius X....our parish is about to celebrate its 60th anniversary. It’s also exciting to know that we will soon have a parish social hall to use. Our annual parish Festival promises to be an extra special one this year as we Celebrate 60! The proceeds from this year’s Festival will be used to buy furnishings for the social hall.

We thank the following businesses for their support of our Festival:Airtime Heating and Cooling: $50.00

Egan Ryan Funeral Home: $100.00Anthony Mampieri, Merit Advisors, LLC: $100.00

Cotner Funeral Home: $500Dee Printing: $500

If you are interested in becoming a SPX Festival Corporate Sponsor and would like more information, contact Natalie Bracone at 614-531-8902 or [email protected].

FESTIVAL TICKET SALES AND VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP WEEKENDS will be held this weekend, July 7/8 and July 21/22. Presale tickets will be 13 tickets for $5.00. You get three additional tickets by purchasing them in advance! Tickets are good for midway games, bake sale items, prize-winning pies, pizza, pop/water, and the beer garden. (Food vendors require cash payment.) Ride tickets and wrist bands may be purchased separately at the Festival. Please consider volunteering to work the Festival. There are many jobs that need done with a variety

of time slots to fit almost any schedule! Sign up with your friends and family for even more fun. Most time slots only ask for a 2-hour commitment, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the evening. This is an excellent way to meet new people and become acquainted with old friends while doing something to benefit the St. Pius Festival!

CALLING ALL PIE BAKERS! It’s time to dust off your rolling pins and “perfect your pie fillings” for this year’s pie baking contest at the SPX Parish Festival on August 3-4.There are some changes in the contest rules; adding another age division and allowing various crust options to encourage more Junior, Young Adult, Adult, and Seasoned Senior participants. Pick up a registration form during Volunteer Sign-Up weekends or visit the parish website www.spxreynoldsburg.com (click on Activities) for registration information.A total of 60 pies will be accepted and when that number is reached – registration will be closed.

SILENT AUCTION AND WINE TOSS… CAN YOU HELP??? St. Pius X Children’s Center Preschool and Pre-K hosts the silent auction at the annual parish Festival. Please consider donating a NEW (never used) item for bidding. We gratefully accept small items like gift cards, or larger items like a weekend getaway, spa or handyman services, OSU football tickets, and everything in-between! Use your imagination. We are also in need of bottles of quality wine for our ring toss game! Please leave a voicemail at 614-577-0826 or email [email protected] to arrange for the collection of your donation. All donations should be received by mid-July. Thank you for your generous support! Come in to the gym to cool off during the Festival and win some real bargains!

SAINT OF THE DAY FOR JUNE 24

The Nativity of Saint John the BaptistSaint John the Baptist’s Story: Jesus called John the greatest of all those who had preceded him: “I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John….” But John would have agreed completely with what Jesus added: “[Y]et the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he” (Luke 7:28).John spent his time in the desert, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His baptism, he said, was for repentance. But one would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie His sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30).John was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. “I need to be baptized by you” (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus, true and humble human as well as eternal God, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. Jesus thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. But making Himself part of that community, He made it truly messianic. The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself – both made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus.Perhaps John’s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if He was the Messiah. Jesus’ answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias.John challenges us Christians to the fundamental attitude of Christianity – total dependence on the Father, in Christ. Except for the Mother of God, no one had a higher function in the unfolding of salvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater than he, for the pure gift that the Father gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity of John, his fierce courage in denouncing evil – all stem from his fundamental and total placing of his life within the will of God.
