IN OUR PARISH

How are you doing on the three pillars of prayer, fasting and spiritual reading I laid out in the Ash Wednesday homily? I especially want to encourage opportunities for learning this Lent. So how is the reading of "Rediscovering Catholicism" going? We gave out over 1,000 copies since the start of Lent and I am praying that they are being read. I was caught up in the opening story and wondering if I would be able to give all my blood, as Jesus Christ did, to save the world. Then I realized that, as Fr. Luke preached last week, we are tempted and caught up in individualism (what's in it for me?), hedonism (if it feels good, go for it) and minimalism (what is the least I need to do to ...). We need fasting, prayer and study to set us free, to really celebrate what we are to become in Christ. I'm hooked and doing the book study on Thursday evening. I invite to you read the next section in the book for next week. (If the print is too small, buy a copy for your nook, or get out your magnifying glass.)

Soup and sermon is another great way to enrich our understanding of liturgy this Lent. Sr. Anne Marie will continue to enrich our view of the liturgy. Oh, and what good soups you make! You can also use the black books, that brings us 6 minutes of prayer a day. I encourage you to read, learn, pray and we will be different at Easter!

This past Wednesday, Bob Biebel, UCS President, presented VISION 2012, outlining the exciting future of Unified Catholic Schools at the Unified Catholic Schools State of the System Address. This was the first address held by Bob Biebel since becoming president in June 2011 and it was inspiring! He shared the new initiatives and directions that UCS will implement in the future, beginning with the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. Most importantly is the vision of a PreK-12 campus located on the same block as the current Neumann Middle School and Lourdes facility. As many may be aware, UCS owns the current Citizens First Credit Union property located at 250 N. Sawyer Street and the plan is to build a PreK-5 elementary school at this location.

The second exciting initiative is the renaming of Unified Catholic Schools to Lourdes Academy, which will unify the consolidations of Catholic education in Oshkosh that have taken place since the early 1990’s. One campus, one school, one name. Since coming to Oshkosh, I’ve met many, many students, young and old, who have at-tended Oshkosh Catholic schools, and the name recognition is always Lourdes. With our pastoral support and the support of the Diocese of Green Bay, we welcome these changes.

If you are interested in learning more about the new directions for UCS, Bob’s presentation will be available for viewing on the UCS website (www.UnifiedCatholicSchools.org). You can get the details on the UCS website at http://www.ucs.k12.wi.us/pages/UCS. Fr. Doug Fr. Luke Vinal I PS: We have two young men from the parish at Conception Seminary in Conception MO. The post office sits right next to the seminary and adjacent to the Printery which helps to support the seminary. The post office may be closing down. It will take a lot longer for these boys to get any mail and packages and the Printery will have a much more difficult time of getting orders out. The nearest town is 20 miles away and the post office is their lifeline. I'm suggesting that, as you pray for our Seminarians this week you take a minute to write Michael Wilms and Michael Thiel a separate note and mail it them at: P.O. Box 502, Conception, MO 64433. Let's show the post office that it is needed by flooding them with letters.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES –

It had been a mountaintop experience. The Dean called Peg into his office and told her that she had placed first in her class and won a full merit scholarship to her first-choice university. Peg was thrilled, floating on Cloud Nine. But as she left the Dean’s office and his words started to sink in she quickly came back to earth. Her scholarship included books and tuition but her mom’s illness took most of her parents’ fixed income and she would have to find a job if she was going to furnish her dorm room, buy some new clothes for school and pick up a used bicycle to get her around the campus. The news the Dean had given her had been beyond anything she could have hoped for and she wished she could stay with the experience, but she knew that when she got home she would find dishes in the sink and a pizza box on the counter announcing what passed for supper most evenings at her house. It had been a mountaintop experience but now she had to come back to reality. And there was no way she could ever explain to anyone how exciting it all was.

Peter, James and John had a similar experience. They, too, had been to the mountaintop; and they, too, had wished they could stay. “Let us make three tents…”. Peter, the practical one, wanted to build something solid to mark the occasion. But Jesus knew better. Jesus knew that there was still work to be done in Jerusalem. And so the disciples came back down from the mountain, and “…they kept the matter to themselves.”

Peg quickly realized that, like Peter, James and John, she was never meant to stay on the mountaintop. Soon she was caught up again in the world of senior end-of-year activities and the responsibilities involved in helping her dad take care of her mom. She had encountered God on the mountaintop, but that wasn’t where God lived. And that wasn’t where she lived, either. God had called her back down from the mountain. There was still much work to be done.

Lent A Sense of the Season

The word Lent means springtime. This word comes from the same root as lengthen. Daytime lengthens during Lent. The northern hemisphere turns toward the sun, the source of life, and winter turns into spring. In Hebrew, the word for repentance is the same as the word that means to turn, like the turning of the earth to the sun, like the turning of the soil before planting. “Even now, says the Lord, turn to me.” (Joel 2:12) The word sin means separation. We are called to turn from our separate selves, from our sin, to come together in community. Self-denial is the way we express our repentance. In the lengthening brightness from Ash Wednesday until Holy Thursday afternoon, our holy Lent, we turn to God as our source of life. Self-denial is threefold, advises Matthew’s gospel. We pray: “Go to your room, close your door, and pray to your Father in private.” We fast: “No one must see you are fasting but your Father.” We give alms: “Keep your deeds of mercy secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” Through the Lenten exercise of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we spring-clean our lives, sharpen our senses, put tomorrow in its place and treasure the day at hand. Why are there forty days in Lent? It took forty days for sinfulness to drown in the flood before a new creation could inherit the earth. It took forty years for the generation of slaves to die before the freeborn could enter the promised land. For forty days Moses and Elijah and Jesus fasted and prayed to prepare themselves for a life’s work. At the beginning of Lent the bishop calls out the names of the catechumens who seek to be baptized at Easter. Their names are written in the book of the elect, the chosen. God has chosen them, and they have chosen to turn to God. Lent is the forty days before the baptism of the catechumens. The already baptized can share the excitement and the struggles of the elect and rediscover the meaning of baptism in their own lives. During the forty days, both catechumens and the faithful journey together to the holy font. We keep Lent together. We put aside our business-as-usual to support each other in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We turn to God to enlighten us and purify us throughout the lengthening brightness of our holy season of Lent. “For now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!”

Operation Rice Bowl

Operation Rice Bowl Reflection: Call and Response In today’s first reading, Abraham responds faithfully to God, and God bestows blessings on him and all of

his descendants. During Lent, we are called to listen to God’s voice in our lives and to respond in faith.

This week through Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about adults and children in Vietnam who struggle

with disabilities. We pray that we may recognize the inherent dignity in all of God’s people, and we fast

so that our sacrifices may bring new life to others. We give so that CRS can continue to help people with disabilities receive

a quality education and find productive work.
