DEAR PARISHIONERS...

Last weekend Fall officially arrived at St. Raphael Church. In case you weren’t able to be here you missed the opportunity to walk/run around the neighborhood, a chance to win some cash or one of 25 HUGE baskets, children’s games and face painting, Mass with a polka flavor, a pancake breakfast with all the toppings, a soup & sandwich lunch with 10 different soups to mix and match (* recipe for the winning soup follows), pies of every kind and corn on the cob swimming in butter. And as if that weren’t enough – you missed Fr. Doug & Fr. Luke in the Great Pumpkin Bowling Competition (you’ll have to ask them which one won)!!

But we all know that a weekend like this doesn’t just “happen”. It takes dozens of volunteers and dedicated staff members to plan, present and clean up afterwards – and we want to thank EVERYONE who helped in any way. Because of you our parish community is enriched and our parish budget supported.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (N-JAMES 5:1-6)

It might have been a scene taken straight out of the great depression. Throngs of people crowded together, waiting all night on the streets of our cities. Like out-of-work people in a bread line or starving children holding out their bowls for a bit of soup they waited. The only difference was that these people weren’t hungry for a piece of bread. These people were hungry for the new iPhone 5, even though most if not all of them already had a perfectly good phone in their pocket.

As I write this column the Emmy Awards are being presented. But before the actual presentations began there were the mandatory interviews on the red carpet outside the theater and the now-expected question asked of each actress, “Who are you wearing?” One by one the beautiful women named the designers of their dresses and jewelry. These people weren’t hungry for food, either. These people were hungry for celebrity status. And, even stranger, it wasn’t based on their work – it was based on their clothes!

When James wrote his letter about clothes becoming moth-eaten and gold and silver corroding he might just as easily have been writing to us. Those fashion-conscious actors and actresses will toss out their gowns and jewels in their hunger for youth and beauty; those iPhone 5 users will queue up again for the next new thing. The problem is, unlike the people in those depression-era bread lines, the hunger these people experience will not be satisfied.

We turn on the news and hear of other hungers – children killing one another for their gym shoes; wages with-held from workers when corporations merge; politicians taking words out of context and reputations being sold to the highest bidder. But there are also other stories – stories of people who build lives rather than destroying them; counselors and therapists who help identify and treat those deeper hungers; clothes closets and food pantries that serve the poor.

“Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.” For what do we hunger? What hungers do we feed? What are we willing to stand in line for?

SEPTEMBER 30, 2012 TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME | 5

Be inclusive There can be no better example, in all of history, of the rule to “be inclusive”, than Jesus Christ. Jesus did not limit his ministry to the religious learned, the political leaders, or the well-to-do. In fact, he focused on those deemed by society as having little or no practical value: prostitutes, widows, and immigrants. He invited those that society chose to forget: lepers and tax collectors. And when it was time to select his inner circle, he did not select rabbis, judges, or scholars, but rather chose the fisherman, tax collector and revolutionary. He chose to present his teachings to those who were considered cast-away; those not considered to be the modern shakers and movers. As his apostles went into the world to evangelize and spread the Good News of the Lord, at his direction, they did not simply preach to the Jews, rather they specifically included the Gentiles. When Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice and accepted his crucifixion, he did so not for a handful of select few, but for all humankind.

“As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26-28) The notion of inclusiveness is fundamental to the Catholic Church and the Church’s goal of evangelization. Civility requires the same inclusive nature. A civil society needs to include all of its various members in the discussion. Such an invitation accepts the importance of each opinion, and recognizes that society cannot progress without input from all factions: Muslims and Jews, Black and White, Rich and Poor, Republican and Democrat, etc… Jesus saw the utility in inclusiveness as the way to spread his word to the world. Inclusiveness is a fundamental way for civility to spread, as well.

As the song says, “All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”.

Visit the Oshkosh Civility Project for more information www.oshkoshcivilityproject.org Discussion: Recall from the first week, “Love thy neighbor”; inclusivity demands taking this command to the nth degree by including strangers and enemies. We watch in the news the tensions between religious and political factions in the Middle East, Africa, and even in the United States, what can we do to help “love thy stranger” or “love thy enemy”?

This column is presented by the St. Raphael Human Concerns Committee in preparation for the November elections.

Fall Harvest Festival a Wonderful Success!

This past weekend’s event was a wonderful Parish activity and a great opportunity for our Parishioners to interact socially with each other and with our community. It takes a major effort with volunteers to make an event of this magnitude happen and for all of those individuals we are extremely grateful. Thanks to all of those folks who stepped up to chair the Festival Committees and to the event co-chairs, Jeremy and Jessica Bates. A special thank you goes out to the generous group of local donors and businesses who helped with donations and special pricing including Festival Foods, Oshkosh for the special pricing and the personal assistance from their staff--- 4 Imprint, Oshkosh for creative design work and pricing on the t-shirts---Mahoney’s Restaurant for the three types of chili and all the fixin’s --- Blue Moose Convenience Stores for the hot dogs and buns---Aliance Laundry Print Shop for the signs--- Honeymoon Acres, New Holstein for reduced pricing on the mums---Allenville Produce for discount corn pricing. A special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for a great Pancake breakfast and to the City of Oshkosh and it’s Police Department for assistance with the walk/run. And last but not least we appreciate our parishioners for the many delicious pies and the wonderful items donated for the basket raffle.

God’s Blessings and thanks to you all!
