In this Sunday's Gospel, the conflict escalates in the
Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the
crowd. "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus
doesn't seem to help, however, and only drives his point
home with more emphasis. "Unless you eat the flesh of
the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life
within you." Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at
the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish
the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become
substantially his own Body and Blood. We celebrate this
sacrament in the Mass.
Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive.
"My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." What
is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our
bodies, providing essential calories for our survival.
Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints,
regulate body temperature, and protect sensitive tissues
like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive
the spiritual equivalent of these essential elements. Like
water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace
moving through us. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks
my blood remains in me and I in him." The Eucharist
connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union
with him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist
while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction
and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive
the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we
receive with deep humility.
As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our
love, separates us from sin -- even wiping away venial
sins -- unifies us with the universal Church, and helps
commit us to humble service. Together we are nourished
for our mission in the world!

BIBLE To understand the Word of God as revealed in the
Sacred Scriptures, no one should presume that he or she
has been given a special revelation from the Holy Spirit.
No individual is guaranteed Truth; the Holy Spirit of
Wisdom comes to humans primarily through the Virgin
Mary and the Magisterium of the Church, His Bride
and Vicar. Although every Christian is anointed with
the Holy Spirit at Baptism, any revelation that comes
to the individual must be tested and shown to be in
agreement with the moral and doctrinal Truths set forth
traditionally by the teachings of the Church throughout
the centuries. Jesus appointed the Apostles to be His
representatives on earth, and they ordained their succes-
sors by the Laying-on-of-Hands. Through them in accord
with the Bible does God reveal Himself, His power, His
majesty and His love.

NEW EVANGELIZATION
If you truly want to be a Christian like Jesus and Mary,
you must cultivate the virtues of Humility to search out
the meaning of God’s often seemingly irrational will and
of Obedience to live according to that will. It seems that
He tests those of us whom He especially loves and has
adopted as His own children by handing us heavier
crosses.
In order to properly and somewhat objectively discern
the will of God in our own lives, the first step is to
heed the cry of the prophets to “Repent and be saved”.
To “repent” means to ask God’s forgiveness for our
arrogance if we ever are inclined to claim, “No, that is
not what I want; you are giving me the wrong
cross.” Instead, each of us must question our own
thoughts and deeds, and admit our own mistakes and
selfish attitudes. Then teach others to do the same.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Frequent Confession is essential in order to grow in our
spiritual lives. Our natural tendency is to do as we
please. Even the just man sins seven times daily
(Proverbs 24: 16). So make the effort to know and under-
stand God’s laws and apply them to your life. Confess to
God through His Priest after you recognize and admit
your sins, those instances when you followed your own
desires or refused to do what is right. Spend time every
night examining your conscience by honestly questioning
your thoughts, words and deeds during the day. Then
take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to tell
God you are sorry and resolve to do better in the future.
If you are truly serious about your Baptism and develop-
ing a personal relationship with Jesus and a strong and
caring character, go to Confession often.
We Need You! Have you thought about becoming more active in our parish? We need help with ministers for Mass.
Altar Servers, if you have received First Eucharist you have met the minimum requirement. We will have a
training session in September. Server guides are on the back table of the church to review.
Readers, help others receive Gods Word by reading the first and second reading and leading the Prayers of the
Faithful.
Eucharistic Ministers, help with the distribution of communion at mass, you must be 18 and have received
Confirmation.
Cantors or Choir Members, to help lead the congregation in song. We know you can sing and will help you!
We try to meet your requests for preferred mass times but some flexibility is needed to fill the schedule.
Current clearances are required for anyone over 18 and we will help you with obtaining what is needed.
If you have served in the past in any of these positions or are interested in starting please call or e-mail the Parish
Office (724) 593-7479 and we will get you started!
Thank you for BBQ Chicken Volunteered Once again we had a wonderful BBQ Chicken Dinner! A very special thanks to George Tayvinsky of
Champion Chicks and his help for all the delicious chicken and the many individuals from the parish who
made the side dishes and desserts! Thank you to everyone who supported the dinner, our parish members,
friends of St. Raymond, and of course members of our community. We served approximately 220 dinners but planned to
be closer to 300 based on what we have done in the past. It was a great day filled with fellowship and fabulous food.
Keep watching the bulletin for upcoming events! With the ongoing road construction we need everyone’s help to
advertise since we are limited in how we can advertise along Rt. 31.

Bethlehem Christian Families Will be here on the weekend of September 1 & 2, 2018
Roni Salsa; a representative of the Bethlehem Christian
Families; a nonprofit organization through Land of Peace
will be with us speaking about the Christian situation in
the Holy Land and selling Crucifixes, religious art work,
and rosaries - all made of olive wood which is native to
Israel and Bethlehem. Since tourism has greatly depleted,
Christian families in the holy land, who depend on tour-
ists, have been greatly affected. The goal of this mission
is to build a Charitable Hospital in Bethlehem and help
the poor and needy families in the Holy Land and the
Middle East. Sale of these goods will help them very
much and also give you the opportunity to have
“something” authentic from the holy land. Please browse
and buy some articles. It is for a good cause and also a
help to your personal devotion. For more information
please see Website: www.landofpeace.org and
