Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
First Reading Isaiah 56:1,6-7
A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants— all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.
The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God
Second Reading Rom 11:13-15,29-32
A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans
Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

Gospel Reading Mt 15:21-28
A Reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.
Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.”
Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.
The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Reflections on our Readings for
The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Readings can be found on Page 2)
“My House Shall Be Called a House of Prayer for All Peoples.”
O ur readings for this Sunday teach us about the
wideness of God’s mercy—that one day, all peoples,
all nations will be included in the Kingdom of God. But there
is an order to salvation in that Israel first, then the Gentiles.
In our first reading (Isaiah 56:1,6-7), the prophet Isaiah
tells of the future time when all peoples who "join
themselves to the Lord" will be welcomed into the house
of the Lord. In biblical language, the term “nations” or
“peoples” usually refer to the Gentile, non-Jewish world.
It is a time when everyone, Jewish and Gentile, will
minister to the Lord equally.
In our Epistle reading (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32), St. Paul
is writing to the mixed Church in Rome of Jewish Christians
and Gentile Christians. In this passage, Paul describes the
duality of his mission. Yes, he is the “Apostle to the
Gentiles” but also so that they will serve as an example to
his fellow Jews. If you remember in last week’s Epistle, St.
Paul talked about his anguish that his fellow Jews rejected
Jesus as the Christ. So yes, his mission is to the Gentile
world, but he never loses sight of his desire to bring Christ
to his fellow Jews.
Our Gospel reading (Matthew 15:21-28), is the seemingly
rude transaction between a Canaanite (Gentile) woman
and Jesus, who ignores her and at one point, even likens
her to a dog. But her faith and persistence triumphs and
Jesus grants her request to save her daughter. Jesus uses
the encounter as a teaching moment to highlight that there
is an order to salvation—Israel first, Gentiles second. This
Canaanite woman, in a sense, model’s Isaiah’s prophesy in
our first reading, in that she “joins herself to the Lord”, and
thus is welcomed by Jesus.
M ost of our ancestors were once Gentiles (non-Jews)
who worshiped other gods. And at some point,
through the efforts of St. Paul and others, and the courage
of the martyrs, they came to "join themselves to the Lord".
And thus we have come into the wideness of God's mercy.
May we lead others to the same mercy through our own
example and witness.

You will have the support of Anne Thomas, our catechists, and each other throughout the year as we explore and practice our faith together. This program is designed to be flexible around your family's schedule and needs, with many options to best suit you and your children.
Please see the “Welcome Letter” and “Initial Plan” at http://www.saintritawebster.org/faithformationk7/
Please use the online registration form or download and return the print-ready registration form to Anne at [email protected], or 1008 Maple Dr., Webster, 14580. This year's enrollment fee is $60 per child, or maximum of $155 per family of 3+ children. The fee is reduced due to the financial difficulties many face due to COVID-19. Money that does not go toward purchasing books will assist the parish in buying supplies for activity kits to send home, as well as any technology or subscription services needed to support online components of the program. Financial assistance is available. Please register your family by August 27 to help ensure an accurate book order; a $5 fee will apply to assist with shipping costs for late registrations.

How Do We Treat God’s Creation?
This weekend we celebrate two women. On Saturday the 15th, we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and on Sunday, our Gospel tells us of the Canaanite woman.
The solemnity of the Assumption of Mary was instituted in 1950 but this teaching, that she had been assumed, body and soul, into heaven, has been around since about the 8th century. Take some quiet time to ponder this; that this incredibly holy person, this creation of God, Mary, in her entirety - body and soul – brought up to heaven. She was not discarded or forgotten. Remember, we too are holy people, creations of God. Therefore, in light of the violence in our world, the climate crisis, the tenor and tone of public discourse, it seems appropriate to ask, do we treat all of God’s creation with dignity and respect, with reverence? Or do we misuse, ignore, mistreat or dismiss some of God’s glorious creation? What can we do to correct that trajectory?
Sunday’s Gospel gives us some answers. It is the story of the Canaanite woman pleading with Jesus to help her daughter. It struck me that the disciple’s response was dismissive. “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” Their response certainly has parallels to our own behavior in our world today. We can, at times, ignore the pleas of those in need. We are too busy. We don’t want to be bothered.
Yet the Canaanite woman persisted, she begged Jesus to help- not her, but someone else; providing us with example to live by. Persist. Not only for our own well-being, but for the well-being of others. Don’t you think God’s creations deserve it?
Peace and much love, Deacon Jim
