P ASTOR ’ S C ORNER

Dear Parishioners,If we but glean these words from the Gospel of John today:

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life,”

we stand to realize that the reason why we profess faith in God as THE MOST HOLY TRINITY is simplybecause that is how Jesus revealed God to us. By speaking of his “Heavenly Father” and by talking abouttheir “Spirit” as another person, we were set on a path to formulating our faith in God as Trinity. But takenote: in this Jesus did not reveal everything to us about God—by no means have we “figured God out.”Fact: the word trinity is nowhere to be found in the Bible. God’s ways are still not our ways and God’sthoughts are beyond our thoughts; there are still a “gazillion” blanks to be filled in. I am reminded of aseminary high school religion teacher of mine, Vincentian Fr. Fred Martinez, who when we asked anythingtouching upon God’s mystery would reply, “Well, son, that’s one of those things I am going to add to mylist to ask God when I finally see him face to face.”

Remove mystery and we no longer require any faith. Yet so precious to our faith is our belief in God as Trinity that we profess this faith every time we make the sign of the cross: IN THE NAME OF THEFATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Think of what a profound act that is— not only do we name God as Trinity, but we also “cross ourselves” to profess our faith in the PaschalMystery of Jesus, and we oftentimes use holy water, thus professing our faith in Baptism. It’s a jammedpacked profession of what we believe as Christians!

Perhaps the most important element of our Christian Trinitarian theology is that Jesusrevealed God to be in relationship—a relationship that flows from being simultaneouslythree and ONE. While it is easy to get caught up in the numbers game, I think the mostsensible way to approach the mystery of God as Trinity is to ask the question, “Howcould it be otherwise?” Being created in the image and likeness of God it stands toreason that as we experience ourselves as individuals who make up one family, manypersons who constitute one community, then God must “Godself” be what God created. It is God’s being in relationship that gives Divine origin and dignity to our own being inrelationship to one another. Any of our relationships “gone bad” are relationships thathave either lost sight of their divine origin, or have never known their foundation in Godto begin with.

This Trinity Sunday, let us pray blessing and the bestowal of grace upon all of our relationships—especiallythose that are vowed! Jesus prayed: THAT THEY MAY BE ONE AS WE ARE ONE! Let us make Jesus’prayer our own as we seek integrity for our relationships and peace—the peace that only Jesus can give—

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. AMEN! —Msgr. Richard

LIFE IN THE TRINITY

The name of the Trinity is, without adoubt, the most familiar sacred nameto us. We speak it every time wemake the sign of the cross, and itforms the heart of our Creed. Trinity

Sunday is a good day, however, to stop and reflect on theunique role of each of the three persons we name so oftenin the Trinity and in our own lives. When we celebrate theEucharist on Sunday, we come together as the Body ofChrist through our baptism, and through the power of the

Holy Spirit we offer the whole prayer of the Mass to Godthe Father. This presence of the Trinity does not stop when we leave church on Sunday. We are—always and every- where—members of the Body, and every thing we do asmembers of that Body is empowered by the Holy Spirit, allof it offered to the glory of our loving Father.

Take a moment each day this week to reflect on howthe persons of the Trinity were present to you during theday, and how other people came to see the presence of the

Trinity in your witness to the Good News.
