The life of our parish is guided by the parish mission which is to educate, form and transform persons into disciples of Christ and to foster their active participation in the life, work and mission of the Church. All parishes are called to be schools of discipleship assisting the People of God with the ongoing life long conversion required to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is in our parishes, families and in the world that we are living witnesses to Christs love and the faith we profess. Discipleship is our invitation to continue Christs saving mission here and now and through generous stewardship change the world!

Stewardship Reflection for Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 1/2: In todays second reading, St. James urges us to be Doers of the Word, and not hearers only (James 1:22). Being a Doer of the Word means being a good steward of the Gospel; meditating on the sacred scriptures and putting the teachings of Jesus Christ into action in our day-to-day lives. Whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed or poor. Being a steward of the Gospel is not taking one single action. It means embracing a lifestyle as a follower of Jesus Christ. What can we do this week to be better Doers of the Word?

SEEING EYE DOGS IN TRAINING We have received several inquiries about the service dogs who have been seen at Mass. These dogs are in training to be service dogs for people with special needs. They attend our Masses as part of their socialization skills. Our parishioners, Monica and Dennis Cullen generously volunteer as puppy raisers for The Seeing Eye.

When Seeing Eye puppies reach the age of seven or eight weeks, they are delivered to the homes of volunteer puppy raisers who live within driving distance of The Seeing Eye. Puppy raisers are foster families, from all walks of life, who nurture and care for their charges until they are about 13- to 16-months-old. They teach the puppies basic manners and commands, and socialize them to a variety of social situations and experiences that range from shopping and car rides, to visiting airports and boarding airplanes.

The Cullens generous sacrifice enables The Seeing Eye to fulfill its mission to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of blind people through the use of Seeing Eye dogs.

How amazing that with the kindness of these incredible people a blind person will have the opportunity to more fully participate in the world, including participate in worship services. We are so grateful for the opportunity to play a part in the training of these dogs.

  • MESSAGE FROM FR. PAUL HOLMES

    My dear Brothers and Sisters,

I have been your priest for twenty years and you have been my family on whom I have depended and continue to depend so very much. I write to you, as both your brother and father, to let you know how much you have meant and how much you continue to mean to me.

As only a few of you know, I suffered a seizure last April and spent a brief time in the hospital. With Gods grace, I was able to return to you, thoroughly ready and able to pray and preach and celebrate the Eucharist with you and for you.

I have let Father John know, however, that I must now step away from my gladsome duties at St. Rose. You can certainly imagine how caring and supportive he and the entire parish staff have been to me. At the same time, I have come to realize that all of you deserve someone who can be both present, and truly active, in our parish.

Please be assured that, on occasion, we will certainly see one another and that all of you are in my daily prayers. Father John has graciously invited me, when I am able, to both preside and preach at St. Rose. In the coming weeks and months, however, I will be focusing on my health.

I ask for your prayers, dear sisters and brothers, and I promise to keep all of you in mine!

May the intercession of our Blessed Mother and of our patroness, St. Rose of Lima, keep us close to Jesus and to one another.

    With so many heartfelt blessings,

    Father Paul

Announcement from Cardinal Tobin Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, has appointed Sister Donna L. Ciangio, O.P., as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark, effective September 1, 2018.

  • HOSPITAL VISITATION:

We are dedicated to visiting the sick because Jesus has shown us that our presence to them is not simply comforting but healing. Hospitals in recent years have been forced to carefully monitor visits by non-family members. Clergy, therefore, are welcome but must know beforehand, who is currently being treated in a hospital or other healthcare facility.

Therefore, please notify us when a member of your family is currently or shortly will be hospitalized or in another healthcare facility so that we can be a familiar presence to them during their stay in a local hospital, rehab center or nursing home. Please call the parish office at 973-379-3912 and leave the name and location of your family member.

If youre pregnant and dont feel like you have much of a choice, call these people.

They dont want your money, they just want to help.

    CATHOLIC CHARITIES DONATION BIN

July is often remembered for its excessive heat, picnics with relatives and friends and of course, time at the beach. We work very hard and deserve leisure time. Some people, due to the hardships of life, have difficulty enjoying recreation in any form. Catholic Charities reaches out to those who suffer. Please help us to continue our mission by contributing to the clothing bin. You can drop your donations of clothing, shoes, household items and toys in the donation bin located in the parking lot. If you have any questions, need a tax receipt or would like to schedule for a larger pick up (sorry no furniture) please call toll free number at 877-343-3651. Thank you.

    ARE YOU IN THE LOOP?

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND SUMMER CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Thank you to all parishioners who have generously made a pledge and/or gift to the parish capital campaign titled Moving Forward in Faith. To date, we have received pledges of $4,968,302 and funds received totaling $4,173,497. We are most grateful for your support! Funding from the capital campaign is to help us address needs outside our normal operating revenues (which are funded primarily by the offertory collection).

Three areas to be addressed with funds from the campaign include; physical plant (renovation, restoration and growth), ministry (particular focus on teens); and reserve funds for the future.

Work on the elevator/pavilion project is underway!

As you will see, the majority of the gathering space will be impacted by this construction. We have had construction fencing installed as a safety and security measure for the work site. A pathway is available by which parishioners can continue to access the ramp and the sacristy entrance to the church.

During the construction, various machinery and workers will be on site. We ask that you follow the safety signage that will be in place.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these renovation projects.

CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND

This week, we will have our annual collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. There will only be one collection so please put your donation envelope for this collection in the regular collection.

Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in over 25 countries still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Thank you for your generosity.

LIFE LIGHTERS MEETING Life Lighters of St. Rose of Lima Parish will hold their first meeting of "Meet and Greet" on Monday, September 10th at 11:00am in the Sacristy. Dues will be collected and October program will be announced. Guest and new members are welcome. Men are also welcomed.
