A Message from our Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers

This is our first Summer with the new St Sampson’s uniform and, despite us coming to the end of the year, students are still looking really smart in their school uniforms, thank you to all parents for your support with this. For the Summer Term jumpers, which are the optional part of our uniform, do not need to be worn. Just blazer and tie. We said good bye to year 11 last week with some sadness, they have matured into a lovely group of students who I am sure will do us proud with their results this Summer, their future studies and careers. We are holding our first ever Summer Fayre on Sunday 23rd June. Prizes, helpers, books and cakes are all needed and we hope you will all pop in for part of the day to support our PTA and school. With the Summer Fayre, Sports Day, Opportunities Week, and the Coastal Walk still to come; we are looking forward to the next half term and hope the weather is kind to us! Yours sincerely

Mrs A Bolt Headteacher

Car Park

Please would Parents/Carers note that when they are waiting for students at the end of school they should use the designated car parking area to the West of the site. At no time should Parents/Carers park or wait in either the staff car parking area or the disabled bays. We have had problems with cars getting blocked in and we have the students leaving on their motorbikes and bikes in this area and it needs to be kept clear at all times due to Health and Safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding. Goodbye to Year 11!

We say good bye to our current Year 11 on Friday 17th May. We would like to wish them every success in their up and coming exams and hope that their Prom Night is an enjoyable night!

Ms Ace-Hopkins, from the Ladies College, has been appointed as Head of Geography, Ms G Lumb has been appointed as Teacher of Science and Ms S Addelsee has been appointed as Teacher of English. They will all start with us in September 2013 and we look forward to welcoming them.

Request re Medical Needs

There seems to be an increasing amount of students coming down to the Medical room who are asthmatic and they haven’t got their inhalers with them at school. Could we ask that should your child be asthmatic you ensure they have their inhalers in their school bags at all times? We would also be happy to keep a spare in the Medical cabinet for them should they forget to put it in their bag. Please bring the “emergency” inhalers to the office in the box with the dosage instructions and child’s name on. Thank you.

Year 8 Charity Fund Raising

Our Year 8 tutor groups had been collecting pennies to see which tutor group collected the most money/made the longest line in the Hall. I am pleased to say we collected £41.86 for Comic Relief and 8CMS had a staggering 3 1/2 widths of the Hall collecting £19. Well done all of Year 8.

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh

Since the start of the spring term the Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh group have been working at completing the hours towards their Physical section. They have had a choice this year of participating in Climbing at school or Sailing down at the Sailing Trust. I have been very grateful for the support that the School has provided by having Mr Le Goupillot and Mr Thomas to help run the sessions. Without them it would not have been possible. The pupils who have been Climbing, Ryan Cherry, Ezekiel Boyce and Connor Alexander (Year 10) have not only completed their hours but they have also completed their NICAS Level 1 and are almost ready for assessment in their NICAS Level 2. These are nationally recognised Indoor Climbing qualifications. Well done!

Humanities Department

Parents are able to access the History homework for Mr Murphy’s lessons on the school website. Year 7 homework club Any year 7’s wanting extra support with their homework there is a Homework club operating on Tuesday lunchtimes in AG10. Film Club The RS department has recently set up a film club for years 10 and 11 on Thursday lunchtimes. This is with the aim of providing students with an extra opportunity to find out more about some of the ethical issues that are studied in class such as, abortion, euthanasia, crime, war, genetic engineering, and many others. There are many Blockbuster films that deal with these issues and we feel this is an excellent opportunity to provide students with extra information for their exams. Revision material will also be available for those who want it. Some films such as Million Dollar Baby and Juno are rated 15. Whilst it is legal to show films to under-15s for educational purposes, we are asking parents to give permission if their child is still 14. Students aged 14 will not be able to attend without a signed consent form.

Sports Report

The St Sampson’s High School PE department would like to thank the Prison for their kind donation of PE equipment. This equipment has included: Indoor Footballs, Badminton Rackets, Shuttlecocks, Tennis Rackets and Tennis Balls. On Thursday 23rd May 2013 St Sampson’s High School held their annual sports day – results will follow in the next newsletter. A team of boys and girls were entered into the Liberation Day Relay Race. Both teams came in 3rd Place. Well done to all who took part. Island Girls Touch Rugby Festival The girls have been putting in time afterschool at the Touch Rugby training sessions led by Miss Matthews and Geraint Cooper (The Island Rugby development officer). Over the 6 sessions they learnt the fundamentals of the game and developed an understanding for the rules. This training led to very impressive results.

The year 7 & 8 team, (Bethany Topley, Utopia Blackwood, Megan Hockey, Danni King, Lauren Smeed, Leonie O’Regan, Caitlin Ellis, Sorcha Todd and Renee Hubert) were undefeated during the tournament winning all of their back to back games, not conceding even 1 touch down! The players rotated during the 12 minute games and they showed an excellent level of fitness and determination. It was by far one of the most impressive performances shown by a St Sampson’s High School team!

The year 9 & 10 team, (Kayla Skillet, Khiasten Henry-Marquand, Chloe Macdonald, Megan Truffitt, Caris Eker, Tiegan Batiste, Jade Ferbrache, Jess McKenzie, Olivia Klucznyk, Skye Mollet and Charlotte Coutanche) also played very well throughout the tournament. The final match we played would determine the result of the Tournament. It went to the wire against La Mare De Carteret and at the final whistle finished as a draw. This placed us as Runners up. Another excellent performance by the St Sampson’s High School girls. They did themselves proud!

Girls and Boys Badminton Leagues The Island Schools Badminton leagues were set up slightly differently this year due to the high numbers of pupils wishing to take part. We entered 3 teams into both the Girls and Boys leagues. The matches have been played up at the Rohais Badminton Halls every Tuesday with last term seeing the girl’s games and this term seeing the boy’s games. Overall we have performed very well. We have won several times against Grammar, Blanchelande and Les Beaucamps. Well done to all the players who have committed their time.

Medieval Guernsey

As part of Opportunities Week this year Mr Thorpe, Mrs Massey and Mrs Searle in conjunction with Castle Cornet are taking students back to 1468 when Guernsey was recovered to the throne of England under Edward IV. As part of this activity we have 17 students attempting to make their own clay pot drinking vessel, sew authentic costume, eat Medieval food, learn various Medieval trades and more besides. We are running an after school club every Wednesday running up to Opportunities Week and when June arrives the odd Saturday too. Now we could do with your help. Can you help us either through sponsorship? The students are going to attempt to handsew their own shirt or shift Mr Thorpe would love to acquire sufficient authentic clothing to dress each volunteer top to tail this could cost up to £250, the campfire equipment will cost over £500. Perhaps you could donate some materials (linen, broadcloth, melton, possibly old unpatterned curtains? etc), or perhaps you have a skill we could use – such as being a dab hand with the needle? If you can help in whatever way please contact Mr Thorpe via the school. Thank you.
