Dear Parishioners, As Cardinal Blase Cupich had asked me to come and serve you as your next Pastor of St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish, let me tell you something about my vocation. I was born in Bogota, Colombia on April 23, 1966. I come from a small family of my older brother and me. By the support of my parents, all my life I have studied at Catholic Institutions. I finished my High School in an institution run by the Salesians Priests; a religious community founded by St. John Bosco. With them, I also studied technical drafting which led me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at the University. At that time I was a member of a youth prayer group in a Carmelite Parish, in which I heard a call from God to the priesthood and the religious life. I decided then to join the Discalced Carmelites and began the novitiate in 1986. A year later I began to study for a bachelor's degree in Philosophy, and in 1994 I received a Master 's degree in Divinity from the Javeriana University founded by the Jesuits in Bogota. After my priesthood ordination on March 26 of 1995, I was assigned to be an Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a rural parish in Sonson, Colombia. My next assignment was an Associate Pastor at Saint Therese of Lisieux Parish in Bogota, Colombia where I was also the editor and manager of an international Carmelite magazine called Spiritual Life. By assisting the parishioners in spiritual counseling, I felt the need to deepen my calling to serve God’s people by pursuing further education, so I came to the USA to study for a Master's degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University. While studying in Chicago, I served at several parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago at weekend masses. When I returned to the Carmelite Province in Colombia, I was asked to serve as a Provincial Treasurer and as a Provincial Counselor. I also was rector of the Saint John of the Cross Theology Seminary for three years and then as a Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Cucuta, Colombia. In need for bilingual priests, I received an invitation to once again serve the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2006 by coming to Santa Maria del Popolo Parish at Mundelein, first as a Parish Administrator and then as a Pastor. Coming to St. Stephen is an opportunity for me to recognize the many blessings God has bestowed upon your parish throughout its 65 years and be able to establish new relationships which enable us to continue spreading the message of the Lord. Worshiping together in this multicultural community is certainly a call from the Spirit to remain growing in God’s service to all. In Jesus and Mary,

St Stephen Protomartyr para servirles como su pastor, déjenme decirles algo de mi vocación. Yo nací en Bogotá, en
Abril 23 de 1966. Vengo de una familia pequeña con un hermano mayor y yo. Con el apoyo de mis padres, toda mi
vida he estudiado en instituciones católicas. Terminé mi secundaria en una institución dirigida por los padres
Salesianos, quienes fueron fundados por San Juan Bosco. Con ellos estudié dibujo arquitectónico el cual me condujo a
comenzar los estudios de ingeniería civil en la universidad. En esos tiempos yo estaba vinculado a un grupo de oración
en una parroquia dirigida por los sacerdotes Carmelitas descalzos, en la cual descubrí el llamado a la vida religiosa
en esta comunidad religiosa en el año de 1986. Un año después comencé mis estudios de filosofía y luego en el año 1994 recibí el título de Master en Teología de la universidad
Javeriana fundada por los sacerdotes Jesuitas en Bogotá. Después de recibir la ordenación sacerdotal en Marzo 26 de 1995 fui asignado como vicario pastoral en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen en una zona rural de Colombia llamada Sonsón. Mi siguiente asignación fue ser vicario de
la parroquia Santa Teresita localizada en la ciudad capital en Bogotá y al mismo tiempo era editor y
administrador de una revista internacional de espiritualidad llamada “Vida Espiritual”
Al estar asistiendo en consejería a los feligreses de esta parroquia sentí la necesidad
de estudiar más y por eso vine a Estados Unidos y logré terminar los estudios de
Consejería Pastoral en la universidad de Loyola en Chicago. Mientras estudiaba allí,
estuve prestando ayuda como sacerdote en varias iglesias de la arquidiócesis de Chicago. Cuando regresé a Colombia a la Provincia de los Padres Carmelitas, se me pidió servir como ecónomo general y consejero de la comunidad. También fuí rector del seminario de teología San Juan de la Cruz por tres
años y luego fuí nombrado Párroco de la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, en Cúcuta.
Ante la necesidad de sacerdotes bilingües, recibí la invitación una vez mas de servir en la arquidiócesis de
Chicago en el año 2006 para estar primero como Administrador y luego pastor de mi anterior parroquia Santa
Maria del Popolo. Venir a St. Stephen es una oportunidad que veo para
reconocer las muchas bendiciones que Dios ha derramado sobre su parroquia en estos 65 años y ser capaces de
establecer nuevas relaciones que nos ayuden a difundir el mensaje del Señor. Orar juntos en esta parroquia
multicultural es ciertamente un llamado del Espíritu para mantenernos en el servicio de Dios para todos.
