Feast of the Transfiguration Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; Peter 1:16-19; Matthew 17:1-9

“Touched By an Angel” was a television drama from the mid-90s in which an angel came to earth and changed the person being ministered to. The episodes always ended with the message of God’s love. But what if someone was touched by Jesus himself, such as the Apostles Peter, James and John in today’s Gospel? After being led up a mountain by Jesus, they witnessed him being changed and transfigured before them, with Jesus’ face shining like the sun and his clothes becoming white as light. This is something we would certainly want to hear about.

More specifically, the Apostles Peter, James and John witnessed something that few people will ever see or hear: the glory of God as Jesus was transfigured be-fore them, and the voice of God which from a cloud declared, This is my be-

loved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. That would shake anyone up. But more im-portantly, it changes them.

Upon seeing Jesus transfigured and hearing the voice of God, Peter, James and John became terrified. They fell to the ground in fear. But then they were touched by Jesus, who said to them the words we hear often from him in Scripture: Do not be afraid. Because fear is the opposite of love. And this touch of the Lord, this message of love, transformed these Apostles so that when the time came, they could share the prophetic message of the glory and honor of the beloved Son of God with the world.

Some of you may be thinking, this is all very nice to hear but we will likely never to be touched by an angel, much less by the Lord Jesus Christ. Except that angels are purely spiritual beings who can work through others to offer care and intercession. How about the angel who works through your co-worker who puts aside her work to listen when she sees the sadness in your eyes? Or the an-gel who acts by means of your neighbor who brings over dinner when your spouse is in the hospital? Or the angel who delivers the message of God’s infinite love in your newborn baby who turns your world upside down with joy?

Those angels change us and bring us the message of God’s love. But we are also touched by Jesus himself. We are touched by the Lord every time we come to Mass, every time we are attentive to the word of God preached and proclaimed, every time we come forward to receive Holy Commun-ion and are nourished and strengthened by Jesus himself. We are touched by Jesus and we are changed. We are transformed. We are made to be like a lamp that shines and brings Christ’s light and love to those living in the darkness of fear, doubt and discouragement.

The more we open ourselves to being transformed by Jesus, the more he will work in and through us as instruments of his love to bring healing and peace to our world.

As always, it was great having you with us in prayer today. We are already in the last few weeks of vacation time so please enjoy it and keep safe and may the Lord bless you and your families.

A Summer Blessing

May you walk with God this summer, in whatever you do, wherever you go.

Walking with God means… walking with honesty and with courage, walking with love, respect and

concern for the feelings of others. May you talk to God this summer, every day and in every situation.

Talking with God means… praying words of praise for the beauty of creation,

saying prayers of thanks for friends and good times,

asking God’s help in all your decisions, expressing your sorrow when you have failed.

May you walk with God every day. Amen

NEED A PRIESTLY VISIT? Please know that if you are homebound, sick, aging, preparing for a surgical procedure, recovering from a surgical procedure. Or find yourself in the hospital unexpectedly – your pastor is most happy to visit you with Holy Communion and Anointing of the Sick. One does NOT have to be in a state of “end-of-life” for the anointing. It can be administered to any one, at any time one feels physically or emotionally “low” in life. Please call the office if we can help. We have been finding out about “sick” parishioners “when it is too late.” Please give us a call – we are here for you!

SUMMER THOUGHTS

Why should we dress properly in the church? Is there a dress code in the church? 1) Jesus is present in our churches in the tabernacle, in the Holy Bible and in the praying community. We hon-or him in the church by wearing honorable dress. 2) Jesus, with a whip in his hands, drove away the merchants and money changers from the Temple of Jerusa-lem for converting his “Father’s house into a market place.” Hence dress we wear for shopping or beach is not expected in the church. 3) Scanty, transparent or provocative dress gives distraction and scandal to the praying community. “Be care-ful however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling to the weak” (I Cor.8:9). 4) We come to the church to offer our lives on the altar and receive God’s blessings. Hence we must dress properly. 5) St. Paul instructs us: “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety.”(1Timothy 2:9-10). 6) People expect modesty and decency in dress and dignity in behavior in the church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (No. 2521-2524), reminds us that “Modesty is decency.” 7) If we wear formal dress for an interview or meeting a VIP but not for going to church, there is something wrong with our attitude in worshipping God. Appropriate dress is the mark of showing respect to God in the church. 8) Christianity teaches us that the sacredness of the human body as a gift from God, calls for thoughtful re-spect and privacy, not over exposure. 9) The congregation expects modest dress and reverent behavior especially from lectors, Eucharistic ministers and choir members whom everybody notices during the Holy Mass...

PARISH SUPPORT The interest of parishioners in the daily operations of one’s parish is extremely important. There are

several areas in which one can participate. Such as: the Parish Finance Council, the Parish Council, and the Liturgy Committee. We are always seeking interested parishioners to join these committees that assist the pas-tor in advising him on the operations of the parish.

The role of the Parish Finance Council is to assist and advise the Pastor in overseeing and controlling the financial affairs of the parish. The Parish Finance Council is accountable to the Pastor, who has the respon-sibility for final decisions. It is understood that if the advice of the Parish Financial Council is unanimous on a given matter, the Pastor will give serious consideration to the recommendation and not lightly reject it. The Parish Financial Council generally meets quarterly to review the budget and finance activity for that period.

The role of the Parish Council is to assist and advise the Pastor in overseeing the over-all operations of the parish in its totality. It is their responsibility to advise the Pastor on whether the organizations of the parish are operating to the benefit of the parish and for the parishioners. It is also their responsibility to plan/organize several events during the year to welcome new parishioners to the parish and to hold events for the benefit of the parish and school community.

Both of these committees are very important to the parish, and especially to the pastor. If interested, please give the Pastor a call. (Fr. Tony)
