PASTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Parishioners, Brothers and sisters: No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same

Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. On this great Feast of Pentecost, the Easter season draws to a close. The liturgical celebrations in the past 50 days have proclaimed Easter joy, and now the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to us so that we may live the joy of the resurrection. The celebration of Pentecost recalls two events: the gift of the Spirit and the beginnings of the Church’s public life. The disciples of Jesus Christ are commissioned for their work of spreading the Good News and are provided with their guide and teacher: the Holy Spirit. Throughout His life, Jesus taught by word and example that everything we say and do must be rooted in love. A true Christian cannot be content with loving in some vague way. We must express love for Christ by living His commandment, to live and to love as He did: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another even as I have loved you, that you also love one another (John 13:34). Through the readings in the Easter season, we heard that the Christian must repeat the same loving life that marked the life of Jesus. So, how do we do this? How do we know what is the loving thing to do? We have been sent a teacher: The Advocate, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is sent by the Father to be the ongoing presence of Jesus in the Church. Without such a presence the “word” of Jesus would soon be forgotten and the life, death, and resurrection would just be a memory. The Holy Spirit teaches us that the Paschal Mystery is the very essence of our lives. If we want to participate in the joy of eternal life, we must be willing to embrace suffering and death in this life. It is through the guidance and the power of the Holy Spirit that we are able to love as Jesus loved and to work together to bring the Good News to the ends of the earth. Let us pray that our Father may send the abundance and the power of the Holy Spirit down upon us and our parish, so that we may be faithful to our baptismal call to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. “The Church of Christ is always, so to speak, in a situation of Pentecost: she is always gathered in the Upper Room in prayer, and at the same time, driven by the powerful wind of the Spirit, she is always on the streets preaching.” –Saint John Paul II God bless you! Fr. Dave Belt

KOC GOLF OUTING The Knights of Columbus Council 10160 at St Stephen the Martyr Parish is conducting a 9-hole scramble golf outing to raise money for seminarians and women attending religious orders. The Council has invited members and parishioners to attend the June 10 event at Eagle Run Golf Course near 132 & Maple Street. Two GREAT silent auction items are a hot air balloon ride (for 2) and a Christmas Light Limo tour (4 people). The raffle prizes and silent auction items will be displayed in the clubhouse before and after the event. Appetizers will be provided by the Council following the event. Another Brother Knight is organizing a Frisbee golf activity for spouses or others who do not golf. This is our Council’s inaugural golf outing to raise awareness and funds for young adults discerning the life of a priest or religious sister. The funds will be used to support our Seminarians and two young women who are attending either a seminary or a school for a religious order. Registration fee is $30. Please contact Steve Cinnamon to register. Call or text 402-669-3441 or send an email to [email protected]. We are limited to 60 golfers.

FR MARK REASSIGNMENT Last week, Father Mark McKercher shared the news with the parish that he has been asked by Archbishop Lucas to take a new assignment as the Senior Associate Pastor at Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish. We are grateful for the 6 years of faithful service that Father Mark has offered to our parish. We will certainly be making time to celebrate and say “thank you” to him over these next weeks, as he prepares to leave us. This past week, Archbishop Lucas informed us that he is assigning a newly-ordained priest to Saint Stephen. Deacon Padraic Stack, who will be ordained a priest on June 2, will begin his duties here on June 30. He is very excited about coming to our parish. If you want to learn more about him, there is a biography page for all of our seminarians on the Archdiocese of Omaha webpage. It can be found under the “Ministries” tab.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.” - 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6All of us are blessed, regardless of our own individual circumstances; God has given each of us many gifts. How we use those gifts is our gift back to God. For God’s plan to work, each must do what we are called to do and guess what – we are not all called to do the same thing!

PARISH APP There are daily quotes from Pope Francis on the App as well as the daily readings and the Sunday homilies.

“Let us not be afraid: let us allow ourselves to be embraced by the mercy of God who awaits us and forgives all. Nothing is sweeter than his mer-cy. Let us allow ourselves to be caressed by God: the Lord is so good, and he forgives all.” – Pope Francis. Reflection: Do you trust that God is waiting for you, ready to embrace you with for-giveness?

SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY HELP END PLASTIC POLLUTION – HOW ARE YOU DOING??? The billions upon billions of items of plastic waste choking our oceans, lakes, and rivers and piling up on land is more than unsightly and harmful to plants and wildlife. Plastic pollution is very real and single-use plastics are small but have a large impact. In 2016, world plastics production totaled around 335 million metric tons. Roughly half of annual plastic production is destined for a single-use product like straws. Just checking - Refusing straws is becoming a trending practice! Have you joined the practice? Refusing straws when eating out? Eliminating straws at a party? It’s not too late to join in – every little bit helps. Let’s see how many plastic straws we can keep out of the landfills this week! Contact Sister Clarice if you would like to form a Creation Care Team – we can make a difference in protecting God’s creation.
