FF R O M T H E R O M T H E NN E I G H B O R H O O DE I G H B O R H O O D 7th Annual Luminary Evening Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday Where: At your home, and around your neighborhood on Monday evening, Jan 21, 2013, from 6:00-9:00 PM. What to Do? Simply put out your Luminary kit, light your candles, check with your neighbor to be sure they are doing the same. Take a stroll around the block, see the lights, visit your neighbor and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate.

Luminary Evening is a tradition started in the 19th Ward during the Winter of 2006. Some neighbors got the idea that it would be great to have an occasion in the middle of Winter for neighbors to get out and enjoy the

Community Spirit and Friendship that exists during the Summer when lots of neighbors are out and about. Martin Luther King Day was chosen, since it occurs at the right time and one of his life goals was connecting all peoples in the US in community spirit, friendship and mutual respect. Luminary Kits are available at Hunts Hardware, Menezes Pizza, and Bolder Cafe or from the 19th Ward Community Association. If you have any questions, call the 19th Ward Community Association office (328-6571) or LaShay Harris (217-2636).

Dear Friends,

We are invited to a Gala Celebration Dinner at The Radisson in Downtown Rochester on Saturday, January 19th at 6pm to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the merger between the former St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and The Church of St. Simon Cyrene back in 1988. This merger came about because of diocesan pressure. St. Luke’s had a large endowment but dwindling membership. St. Simon Cyrene had an active congregation but dwindling financial resources. To many, the merger seemed logical on paper, but in the flesh the two churches were quite different.

St. Luke’s Church was an historic church in the center of downtown Rochester, predominantly white. Nathaniel Rochester was one of the founding members, and many influential city residents were past members. St. Luke’s had welcomed Dignity, the Lesbian/Bisexual/Gay/ Transgender group within the Episcopal Church, into their building, allowing them to hold weekly services there when they were not welcomed in most other Episcopal churches. Liturgically, St. Luke’s was considered a “low church”, simple yet elegant worship.

St. Simon Cyrene Church was predominantly an African American Church, steeped in the black tradition and committed to service. The Oregon Leopold Day Care Center was founded and supported by St. Simon’s, and also Two Saints, until it closed. A number of St. Simon’s members had been directly involved in the civil rights movement in Rochester, but many were not

accepting of the gay community. They had an active men’s group and embraced the beauty of a “high” liturgical style, including ornate vestments, incense and bells.

The transition was not an easy one. It took time to build trust, and to become one body. It was a labor of love that has blessed the entire diocese, especially the city of Rochester. Two Saints has become a place of worship that displays an incredible racial diversity and continues to embrace a vibrant liturgy.

St. Stephen’s has enjoyed a partnership with Two Saints for more than five years now. We have benefitted from their participation in our ministries, and from the development of new ministries that we run together. We have grown together in mission with this city. We are better because of it. St. Stephen’s is one of the sponsors of the event, but our physical presence there will be a greater gift. I plan to be there on the 19th, and I hope that many of you will join me. Cost of the dinner is $35. You can purchase a ticket in three ways. Call Herman & Jennifer Gourdine (377-6443), or go on-line and visit the Two Saints’ website at www.twosaints.org (click on “Anniversary”). You can also sign up in the back of the church, and place a check made out to “Two Saints” in the offering plate. Write “25th Anniversary” in the memo line.

Good friends are hard to find. Two Saints has been a wonderful friend to us. Let’s celebrate that together on the 19th!

Joyfully,

Mary Ann+
