Dearly Beloved in Christ, The Annual Catholic Services Appeal, or CSA, raises funds for the various ministries and efforts of evangelization within the Diocese of Reno. This is an essential appeal that needs the support of all Catholic people to a degree that any person can give. The campaign begins in February and concludes the following January. Each parish is given a goal, and once that goal is met, any amount donated over that goal is returned to the parish as a rebate. Parishes will use this rebate to do repairs, pay down debt, or help with their charitable works. Fr. Tom Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, In his Second Letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul reflected on the young church in Macedonia. At the time, the Christians there were undergoing severe trial and poverty. Despite this, they asked what they could do to assist the poor Christians in Jerusalem to further the mission of the Gospel. “… their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For, I testify, they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service of the Lord’s people. And, they exceeded our expectations.” 2 Cor. 8: 2-5 This Scripture passage reminded me of you, and inspired me to choose the theme Gracious Acts of Giving for Catholic Services Appeal 2020. I believe this is fitting, because, in you, I see the same selflessness and generosity exhibited by the early Christians of Macedonia, our ancestors in faith. They gave willingly and joyfully to advance the work of the Church, just as you give graciously and generously to our Church today. I am awed by your willingness to answer my call each year to support the Church in northern Nevada by donating to CSA. CSA is one of the most important means for building our community of faith here in the Diocese of Reno. Your contributions to CSA help us educate our priests, deacons and lay people; form our children and families in faith; reach the homebound; and so much more. The good work funded by your donations is outlined in more detail in the enclosed CSA brochure. I invite you to join me in making a pledge to CSA, as together, we manifest the theme Gracious Acts of Giving. I thank you for your abundant generosity, which I ensure will be fruitful for the Church in northern Nevada. You remain in my prayers, Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

This year we are called to bring in our stewardship to raise $165,306.00 towards CSA. We are a mission Diocese in the West Coast and we have so many ministries and missions. CSA funds is used to spread the mission of the Church .We are members of the Body of Christ.

Stewardship begins with each one of us, but the work of the Church belongs to all of us. We ask all of you to make a generous monetary gift. If you cannot, please make a gift of prayer and complete a pledge card with that prayer promise.

CLERGY FORMATION AND SUPPORT: Men studying to be diocesan priests depend on CSA and the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians, along with financial support from other sources such as the

Gerald Glenn Fund, to pay the cost of tuition, books and living expenses, which amounts to more than $50,000 per seminarian each year. In addition, CSA helps fund: Diaconate Formation - Ongoing Education for Clergy - Financial Assistance for Retired Priests - Education and Faith Formation. Last year, 490 families participated and pledged $184,742.60. So far we will be receiving a rebate of $6,293.60 due to your generosity. My hope is to get more families participating this year. I pray you will be a part of this essential program. Blessings to you, Fr. Tom

“OPEN YOUR HEART TO GOD” this Lenten season

As we enter the Lenten season, we should be taking more time for prayer and reflection. The parish is giving each family a Lenten gift of a daily reflection booklet. Since Lent offers us a chance to grow in deeper friendship with God, we turn this year to three experienced friends of Jesus -- Pope Francis, Thomas Merton and Henri J. M. Nouwen - to share their insights about how to open our hearts to God in our encounters with others and in our work for God's kingdom on earth. Please pick up this gift from the parish on your way out of Mass (one per family).

Blessings on your Lenten journey to Easter,

Fr. Tom

The Church and Parish Office will be closed

this coming Monday, January 17th, in honor of President’s Day.

and 23rd. Dean’s Beans, our coffee distributor, is involved in social activism and states: “Creating a revolving book reading and loan program to increase children's literacy is a great example of direct, people-centered development that addresses one of the critical priorities identified by the farmers themselves. Back in 2017, we launched a new program with our coop partner Prodecoop in Nicaragua aimed at encouraging children to read and providing them with quality books and the opportunity to do so. Now called "The Forgotten Children's Literacy Project", this incredible program has given the opportunity of reading to over 150 children from 8 coffee communities!”

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES:

OPERATION RICE BOWL

CRS Rice Bowls are available in the gathering space for Lent. As you proceed through Lent, use the rice bowl for any coinage/change you receive from your regular purchases. At the end of Lent, turn in your rice bowl full of change to the box at the parish. When you donate to CRS Rice Bowl, even a small offering has the potential to feed many. Jesus fed thousands with a few loaves of bread and two fish. Let us follow his example, committing our 40 day Lenten journey to meeting the needs of our global human family.
