THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When the people grumbled to Moses for water in the desert, the LORD heard and brought forth water from the rock for all to drink (Exodus 17:3-7). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95). Second Reading — God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8). Gospel — Ask, and you will be given living water so that you will never thirst again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Kgs 5:1-15b; Lk 4:24-30 Tuesday: Dn 3:25, 34-43; Mt. 18:21-35 Wednesday: Dt 4:1, 5-9; Mt 5:17-19 Thursday: Jer 7:23-28; Lk 11:14-23 Friday: Hos 14:2-10; Mk 12:28-34 Saturday: Hos 6:1-6; Lk 18:9-14 Sunday: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Ps 23; Eph 5:8-14; Jn 9:1-41[1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday of Lent; First Scrutiny Friday: Abstinence Saturday: First Saturday

HUMILITY

When we kneel at Church it is amongst many things a sign of humility. Kneeling is also admitting that I am a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness and blessings. When we look at the parable of Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Lk 18:9+)

we see that the tax collector’s prayer is acceptable to Christ because of his humble attitude. Christ teaches us that (1) no one who is proud can pray properly. (2) No one who despises his fellow man can pray, we cannot lift ourselves up. We all need to kneel before the mercy of God. We are all sinners—sinful suffering humanity. (3) True prayer comes not from comparison to another but from our need and love of God. “God be merciful to me a sinner.” The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem has a low door lintel. This resulted from a time when raiders would ride horseback into the Church and steal the sacred vessels and harm the pilgrims. So the keepers of the Church lowered the lintel of the door. Now, no one can ride a horse into the Church. The faithful must humbly bow down to enter. Rabbi Joshua Ben Qarehan was asked one day, “Why did God choose the thorn bush as the place from which to speak to Moses? The Rabbi answered, “God chose the humble thorn bush—to teach you that there is no place on earth bereft of the Divine Presence, not even a thorn bush. Hence we can pray anywhere and at anytime. We have our sacred and private places of prayer. Christ’s presence in the Eucharist helps us to be aware that we are in the Holy Presence of God in Church. When we pray we can be like the Pharisee who stood and looked God in the eye, prayed to himself next to the altar. Or we can be like the tax collector, who offered a humble prayer.

Giggles: A priest was accosted by a mugger while walking down a dark alley. The thief demanded his wallet. As the priest opened his coat to reach for his wallet, the would-be mugger saw the collar and realized he was robbing a priest. He immediately apologized and said: “Forget it, Father. Keep your money. I had no idea you were a priest.” Both nervous and relieved, the priest took out a cigarette and offered one to the stranger. “No, thank you,” the robber said, “I gave up smoking for Lent.”

PARISH MINISTRIES UPDATE

Eucharistic Adoration: Come before the Blessed Sacrament in prayer and adoration during this Lenten season. Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 8:30am and Saturdays, 9:00am to Noon. We hope to expand this schedule after Lent with your help. If you would like to be part of this ministry or would like more information, please call David or Kristine Hornbeck at 823-5177. Church Cleaning: This ministry is a spiritually rewarding mission, while serving the Church and our parish community. It also provides a special opportunity for contemplative time. This is a “light duty” ministry and we need a few more volunteers to fulfill the goal of keeping our Church beautiful. Ideally, we hope to have “crews” of 2 or more on Monday mornings and either on Thursday or Friday mornings. We welcome anyone who would like to help out on an “as needed/special occasion” basis. If you are interested or have any questions, please call Renee Jacobs at 823-8772. Senior’s Group: The monthly newsletter is now available at the back of Church and posted in the bulletin boards. Our next general gathering is March 14th and it will be a St. Patrick’s Day theme. On February 29th, we will have a board meeting at 1:00pm in the fireplace room.

****************************************************** All Heads of ALL ministries please send me, from time to time, the good news of their ministry amongst us. (Fr. Mike)
