They seek Him because He filled their bellies. We face the same challenge today when we find ourselves lured by the promises of instant gratification. We all need to go deeper than the ‘loaves’ themselves: to realise the compassion in God in the miracle and the possibilities each one of us has to be that same ’bread’ of hope and generosity for one another. Jesus calls us to move beyond these quick fixes to discover the word of God creating and animating our lives and our world. This is the ‘bread from heaven’ that Jesus speaks of in todays Gospel: selfless compassion, grace and gratitude - the food that will not perish, the food that nurtures all that is good, the food that sustains us on our journey to meaning and purpose. To receive the Eucharist worthily, we must not only consume the sacrament but allow ourselves to be consumed by the sacrament.
