A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman
Dear Friends,
This week marks the beginning of the new academic year for our students at St. Theresa School. Where did the summer go? If only the three months of winter went as fast as the three months of summer!
College students are mostly in session already, as are the area high schools. I remember as a child that school never started before Labor Day, but those times are long past.
I am very proud of the school we have at St. Theresa. Our principal, Mary Keenley, is beginning her sixth year at St. Theresa (as am I) and I couldn’t be happier with her leadership. She is a leader with great faith and vision, who is always creating ways to better form and educate our young people. Our faculty is top-notch as well – a great blending of veteran and newer teachers! One of the things I particularly appreciate about our faculty and staff is their love of the children in their care as well as their loyalty to our school. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see our teachers and staff volunteering to help at events that support our school and parish.
All of this would not be possible, however, without the support of the parents who send their children to St. Theresa School, and the rest of the parish community who support our school through their prayer and generosity. It’s always important to remember that St. Theresa makes a commitment to subsidize the cost of education and formation for each of our children in our school in order to make our tuition as affordable as possible.
I know parents have a lot of options for forming and educating their children in this community. We have a good public school system and good options in the private school sector as well. I am very grateful each of our parents has chosen St. Theresa for their children and I certainly appreciate the sacrifices they make to enroll their children here.
I do have good news to share with you. As of the writing of this article, our enrollment for St. Theresa School (pre-school though eighth grade) stands at 381 students! We ended last year with an enrollment of 360. Enrollment has been steadily increasing for several years and it has been the joint goal of Mary Keenley and myself to see our enrollment increase to 500 students in the not too distant future. Why is that important?
Catholic education and formation has been a goal of the Catholic Church in this country for decades. It is through the formation of our young people that the future of the Church is strengthened and more and more people are brought to the Good News of Jesus Christ – which ultimately leads us to union with Him in salvation.
In a few weeks from now, we will also begin a new year for our Religious Education Program at St. Theresa. Elizabeth Vogt, our Director of Religious Education has been leading the program for many years and does a great job in providing faith leadership for our RE Program. She also recruits and forms our volunteer catechists, who devote much time and energy to forming the young people in their care.
Several years ago when I was pastor at St. Bede Parish in Ingleside, circumstances required me to help coordinate the RE Program for one year. It was then I realized how complex a job that is and how generous catechists are in donating so much time in preparing for and teaching the religious education curriculum to their students. Like our school teachers, catechists truly love the children in their care and we are very fortunate to have such an excellent RE Program at St. Theresa.
I thank the parents who entrust the faith formation of the children to us in the RE Program. With all the commitments kids have nowadays outside of school, it is wonderful to see them here learning about their faith!
I am also grateful for our priests at St. Theresa – Fr. Matt, Fr. Tom and Fr. Michael for their service to our School and RE Programs. We are blessed to have such good priests!
I would ask that all of us pray for the children in our care at St. Theresa School and Religious Education, that the Holy Spirit might inspire them to be enthusiastic learners of the Good News and help put that into practice in their lives. It’s also a good time to pray for parents who have the awesome responsibility of raising their children to be authentic witnesses of Jesus Christ in a world that doesn’t always welcome that witness. Finally, let’s say a prayer of thanksgiving for all those who work and minister with our children. They are truly generous and faith-filled people!
Enjoy the week and God bless you always.
