Twentieth SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 20, 2017

Fr. Phil

Dear Parishioners: One more thing about my recent vacation/family reunion, and then I’ll give it a rest. It has to do with my nephews and nieces. They’re making me feel old. Most of them – my baby brothers’ two children being the exceptions – are now in their forties. When did that happen??? Where did the years go??? I’ve got five nephews and five nieces. All five nephews and three of my nieces are married. A fourth was married but went through a divorce after about five years of marriage when she learned that he was engaged in a pattern of infidelity. At the time of their divorce, their first boy was a little over two years old; their younger one, eleven months. Now, I started working in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s Tribunal in 1980. I was with the Tribunal full-time for five years and then served on the Appellate Tribunal for the State of Wisconsin from 1990 to 2015, when Pope Francis changed the rules world-wide. At the same time I began with the Tribunal I became involved with the New Horizons Ministry for divorced and separated Catholics in the Archdiocese, serving as a chaplain on the group’s three-day weekend retreats; I’ve been connected with that ministry ever since. Through the combination of exposure to stories of failed marriages in my years with the tribunal and listening to the heart-wrenching revelations of New Horizons participants, I’ve grown by leaps and bounds in my appreciation for how devastating divorce can be, not only to the parties, themselves, but also to their fam-ilies (their children, their parents, their siblings). Despite the many good things that Milwaukee has done through its Tribu-nal and through ministries like New Horizons, I’m also quite aware that not every diocese and not every representative of the Church in this Archdiocese is equally compassionate toward our divorced and separated members. In fact, sometimes elements within the Church can come across as cold and indifferent, a sometimes judgmental, in the face of such traumatic occurrences. I’d always wished that there was something I could say or do for people struggling through a rough divorce to make up for my own inadequacies and for others’ insensitivity. This niece of mine works for the Diocese of St. Petersburg (Florida) as a broadcaster on the diocesan radio station. She didn’t tell me (but one of my sisters-in-law did) that she’d written a book about her experiences. Actually, she is a co-author with two other women, also divorced. The book is entitled My Calendar Is Written In Crayon. Curious, I ordered a copy through Amazon.com when I got home. It arrived last Saturday. It’s quite a brilliant little thing: ten chapters, arranged somewhat topically, with each woman con-tributing sequentially – Shirley, then Liza, then Abby – to the subject at hand. (I confess: I skipped over a lot of Shirley and Liza to focus on Abby. Can you guess which one is my niece?) The next time I see Abby, I’ll ask her how the three of them got together and came up with the idea for this book. Its sub-title, “Smart Advice from Working Single Moms”, describes their effort beautifully. I regret that we didn’t have something of its caliber to hand out years ago. For now, however, if someone in your family is going or has recently gone through a divorce – or you have a good friend or valued co-worker who is in that situation – you might consider ordering a copy for them. (It’s only $9.95.) Tell them Father (not Doctor) Phil recommends it.
