CANDLE INTENTIONS

Church: Mary Louise Gilchrist

There is a persistent temptation among Christians to think that the kingdom of God--that reality for which we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, when we ask that God’s will be done on earth as in heaven--is something that we bring about by our own efforts. In part this is a temptation because in thinking his we do not give Christ his due as the one who makes God’s kingdom present. But it is a temptation also because the kingdoms that we strive to create often reflect our own values and agendas more than they do God’s. Whether one is liberal or conservative or something else, we tend to imagine that God’s will being done on Earth would look a lot like what we and our like-minded friends would like to see happen. But the parables of the Kingdom in today’s Gospel, comparing it to grain sown in a field and the mustard seed that surprisingly grows into a great plant, seem to emphasize that the Kingdom arrives no through our efforts but by God’s grace. As God says to the prophet Ezekiel: “as I, the Lord, have spoken, so will I do.” It is God who brings about the growth of the promised kingdom in our midst, and God does this by means that we cannot imagine in advance. Jesus emphasizes repeatedly that the arrival of the Kingdom will be a surprise. At the same time, as Paul in his Second Letter to the Corinthians reminds us, we will be judged for what we “did in the body”--i.e., in this life. So in some sense our actions, while not the cause of God’s kingdom, do still matter in the coming of the Kingdom. Our actions in this life do sow the seeds of the Kingdom. Moreover, the hidden and surprising growth of the Kingdom is something that we must attentively wait for, so that we will be ready, like the man in Jesus’ parable, to wield the sickle when the time for harvesting comes.

Beyond Cornerstone

The Beyond Cornerstone Service has been asked to sponsor an afternoon of summer camp for children ages 5-12, at St. Augustine’s Parish in Newark. Our visit will be on Friday, July 24 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. We expect

50-70 campers.

To make our visit a success and give the children a little summer fun, we are asking for help with our wish list: bubbles, jump ropes, balls, coloring books/crayons, hula hoops or any age appropriate games. Arrangements will be made to pick up any donated items.

We are looking for volunteers for face painting and a musician to lead the children in a sing-a-long.*

We will be preparing a meal for the campers, but an ice cream truck would make the day complete. If anyone can help make that happen, please let us know.

Monetary donations are most welcome. Checks should be made payable to St. Thomas the Apostle and dropped off at the Parish Center or in the collection basket. Please mark your envelope “Beyond Cornerstone Service”.

To volunteer or donate, please contact: Marianne Sommerkamp: 973-768-6720 Joyce Cupoli: 973-785-1840 Alicia von Schaumburg: 973-752-2059

*Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older.

Thank You!

parishioners who contributed to our collection of

First Communion Outfits. We collected 19 dresses,

11 suits and 10 veils. Your monetary donations of $461.00 went a long way to provide accessories such as shirts, ties, shoes and socks.

The Stewardship Office of the Archdiocese of Newark

collected more than 400 dresses and 100 suits for families in need.

We heartily thank you for your support.

Pope Tweet(s) of the Week:

5/30 - Lord, grant us the awesome gift of meeting you.

6/2 - The light of the Gospel guides all who put themselves at the service of the civilization of love.

6/4 - We need to build up society in the light of the Beatitudes, walking towards the Kingdom with the least among us.

Food Pantry

There is a Food Pantry at St. Thomas, established to serve the needs of parishioners and others in need. The goal of the program is to provide sustenance to individuals and families who, for many reasons, do not have enough to eat. If you are in this situation simply contact the Parish Center and we'll do our best to assist you. If you know of a parishioner that you feel may have this need, please make them aware of the program and have them contact us. Food Collection Sunday is usually the third Sunday of each month, when our parishioners generously drop off Grocery store gift cards in the collection basket in an envelope marked "food pantry" and leave food at the church doors for those in need.
